Love, Death, & The After: Darkness: Book 1 Kindle Edition

4.0 4.0 out of 5 stars 15 ratings

Human civilization has collapsed. Rainey Vidic, MD is a genius, and she has Preston Hayes—her open hand, or hammering fist…

…Only the strongest and smartest will survive in The After.

A gifted surgeon, her retired warrior lover, a former Marine, and a taciturn drone pilot fight for survival in a dangerous and pitiless world, while navigating human needs for love, family and community.

When one of their own faces a lethal illness, Dr. Rainey Vidic’s efforts are compromised by a savage horde of highly intelligent, relentlessly evil creatures that threaten the lives of the entire team.
Desperate to save their teammate, the Team encounters an imperiled town of survivors that may hold the key to saving them all. . . or send humanity into extinction.

With echoes of McCarthy’s “The Road” and the thrill ride of “Jurassic Park,” this three volume, four part series, “Love, Death, & The After,” tests the limits of romance, loyalty, and community against a violent world hell-bent on devouring it all.

Christopher “CK” Page wrangled a Creative Writing degree from an unsuspecting Californian university and authored & published numerous speculative fiction stories and a few novels, among other shenanigans. Christopher writes from overpopulated, under-watered California with a brilliant Mate and some Beasts (all knuckleheads of felus domesticus)—there are some grown-up Offspring somewhere—“Call yer father!” Sexy as hell, he stays fit in retirement from a career as a referee with US Soccer, CIF/NFHS, and US Lacrosse.

What a ride!
Intense action, alongside emotional and vivid descriptions of a world that could be.
This book is part 1 of a novel that takes the post-apocalyptic genre and turns it on its ear, and then twists it sideways!
It's got zombie-monster-creatures that are unlike any you've ever seen, a scientific base that seems completely plausible, not to mention a love story and a female protagonist that rocks! On top of all that, throw in some good old-fashioned military tech and skills, and you've got an experience that's worth diving into.
CK Page has created something truly innovative with this creative story and engaging characters.
Join me in supporting this author to finish the remaining parts of this novel, by buying and reading this book - which is Part 1.
I want to read the next parts as soon as possible!

A doctor and her warrior lover are part of a team roaming in a post-apocalyptic world, trying to save a colleague stricken with a mysterious illness and themselves from the beasts - human and otherwise - bent on destroying the last vestiges of life in the 'before'. Interesting story with some exciting moments, but Part 1 doesn't end as much as stop with a cliff-hanger where nothing is resolved. If you like everything up to the so-called end, you might want to stick around for Part 2. For me, 3.5 stars for the writing, 1 star for the final page.

As soon as I stepped into the world of "Love, Death & the After" I readily suspended disbelief and forgot I was reading. Page's suspenseful description of a post-apocalyptic world, in which humans not only battle each other for survival but also fight the Things, made my heart skip a few beats every now and then. The main characters, Preston and Rainey are both military and as such are embodiment of courage, resolve and the ultimate instinct for survival. Rainey is a medical doctor who under the worst of circumstances and sometimes even against advice strives to uphold the Hippocrates' oath and help those in need, regardless of whose side they are. She and Preston are lovers who fight side by side always trying to protect each other from their adversaries. Even though Rainey is a G.I. Jane type of girl, fully confident and able to take care of herself, she appreciates Preston's protectiveness of her. I absolutely loved this gentlemanly side of him, and his love of Rainey as the only chink in his seemingly impenetrable armor.
As I went deeper and deeper into the story's ambiance, I experienced some of the same blood-curdling emotions I felt while reading Cormac McCarthy's novel, "The Road". Both stories paint a gloomy picture of a world in which humans are fighting tooth and nail for survival in an environment stripped off every aspect of normalcy. And the Things in Page's story, with their cunning, agility and instinct for killing reminded me of the Velociraptors in Jurassic Park.
Page leaves the reader guessing as to what had happened in the Before that has left such devastating consequences in The After. Along with Rainey, the reader also speculates about the origin of the Things or Naguals, as some people call them. Did they mutate from humans? Are they of alien origin? What is their Modus Operandi and their weakness? All of these questions remain unanswered in this book and I cannot wait to read its sequel to dispel the mystery.
Page's prose is vibrant, but concise, economic and at times clipped. Utilizing such devices he creates scenes full of action that is, at times so dizzyingly fast-paced that it keeps the reader on the edge of his/her seat. In an post-apocalyptic world in which every aspect of human living is out of joint, the love between the two main characters is that beacon of hope and light that infuses the reader with cautious optimism that human spirit will prevail.
Lovers of sci-fi are in for a real treat with this masterfully crafted story.

Scary, harrowing, and romantic story about the world after pandemics turn people into demonic looking creatures. They aren't zombies though. These creatures have intelligence. Check it out.

Exploring issues of climate change, genetic manipulation, and playing with all the systems that break down as humanity loses its grip on the modern world, the world building is solid. I enjoyed the hints that technology had reached futuristic heights before the Before ended and the After engulfed society; that kept the sense that we’re reading sci-fi and not hard Apocalyptica strong.
However, the book relies heavily on exposition to get everything across. It gets tedious by the third chapter of Book 1. Which is a shame, because there are some interesting interpersonal dynamics and some great ideas…but the delivery is clunky enough that focusing on the good is a struggle. If you like action-heavy procedurals and quest plots such as The Avengers, The Road, Die Hard and the Resident Dead movies, this is up your alley. It didn’t really do a lot for me, but a good shoot-and-run with intrigue used as the seasoning rather than the meal is something that plenty of people love.

5.0 out of 5 stars I enjoyed this book very much because of its vibrant language

I enjoyed this book very much because of its vibrant language, fast-paced action, credible characters and the atmosphere of constant suspense. It describes an apocalyptic world in which the universal themes of good pitted versus evil and love that surmounts obstacles are central. I was disappointed when I realized there was a sequel to this book for which I would have to wait.
