Fogged Inn (A Maine Clambake Mystery Book 4) Kindle Edition

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 1,542 ratings

An autumn chill has settled over Busman's Harbor, Maine, but Julia Snowden is warming up the town by offering lobster stew at the local diner. When her landlord discovers a dead body in the walk-in refrigerator, Julia must figure out who ordered up a side of murder.

Nothing's colder than a corpse--especially one stashed inside a sub-zero fridge. The victim spent his last night on earth dining at the restaurant bar, so naturally Julia finds herself at the center of the ensuing investigation. Lost in the November fog, however, is who'd want to kill the unidentified stranger--and why. It might have something to do with a suspicious group of retirees and a decades-old tragedy to which they're all connected. One thing's for sure: Julia's going to make solving this mystery her early bird special…

Includes Traditional Maine Clambake Recipes!

great mystery and easy to read

I find these cozy mysteries a good series. Not too sugar sweet, interesting plots and believable characters. A good break from other books when you just want an easy enjoyable read.

I've read the whole Maine Clambake mysteries series. I wasn't sure I would continue reading this series. The first book was okay, but...now I'm glad I did continue. Each book has gotten better and better. This last one was so interesting and mysterious that I couldn't stop reading; I had to know how it ended. Julia is trying to figure out what a murder that happened "last night" at the Gus Two Restaurant has to do with a couple's death 40 years ago. Who is trying to keep the truth from coming out? I read until I fell asleep and was reading again while drinking my first cup of coffee at 5:00 a.m. I finally found out what had happened, and I hadn't even anticipated that ending. I like how the characters are more fleshed out. I like how much Julia and Chris and their relationship have grown and matured with each book. I really appreciate how the author let's Julia do her investigating without having Chris trying to stop her because it's too dangerous and she's just a helpless woman. As long as she is honest with him regarding her plans, he's backing her up. He even tells her to take his truck to do her sleuthing. Now all the state police have to do is start listening to her. She's usually on the right track in her investigating; maybe not always, but usually. After all the investigations she's helped with, they need to trust her judgement and intuition. In the meantime, I've already got the next book loaded on my Kindle, ready to start reading.

Ross has the ability to develop relatable characters and kept me changing my guess about who the guilty character would be. I enjoyed how she leads the reader to one conclusion and then throws a twist that keeps the pages turning to see what comes next. I appreciate the fact she can write an intriguing cozy without pushing a personal agenda.

I am not in love with the protagonist. She is depicted as sort of a ninny, rather than a well educated former professional woman. The twist is interesting, but sometimes I just want to reach into the book and slap her. Some of the dialog is hard to believe. I read the first book in this series and enjoyed it much more.

Fogged Inn is the fourth book in the Maine Clambake Mysteries and is the best one yet! Winter finds Julia Snowden and her boyfriend Chris running Gus Too's restaurant two evenings a week and settling into their new relationship. The clambake business is non-operational in winter months so they're trying to make a go of another business. In order to promote business, Julia sold gift certificates for the holiday season and the book begins after the holidays are over. Four couples who seemingly have nothing in common except they all received gift certificates for Christmas arrive on the same cold evening. They are the only diners except for a lone man who eats at the bar while they are dining. This man ends up in the deep freeze under very suspicious circumstances, resulting in a homicide cause of death. Since the homicide causes closure of both Gus and Gus Too restaurants, Julia once again tries to assist the authorities in closing the case quickly. I didn't guess the murderer until the very end of the book and the mystery itself was very satisfying. My favorite part of the book was the interaction of the various characters involved in the murder investigation. If you're a cozy mystery fan, I highly recommend this great series.

Even though I had pre-ordered the book, I was furnished an advance copy of this book by the author and publisher in exchange for a honest review. The opinions and recommendations are based on my opinion.

It’s off-season in Busman’s Harbor and Julia and Chris are making it a go with their relationship and a new nightly restaurant called Gus’s Too. It provides a place for locals to come at night for date night and let’s Chris show off his culinary skills. Four couples and a single man come to dine on the Monday after Thanksgiving. Unfortunately, one doesn’t make it alive by morning.

Book four in the Maine Clambake series was enjoyable in that we get to see Julia settle in to her new life back in her hometown. Since book one I’ve had my reservations about her relationship with Chris and I still have them after this book. Im just not sure they are right for each other for the long haul. So many secrets between them. Especially on Chris’ side.

Recipes are included for a fish and chicken entrée and a chowder. All sound delicious.

Really good read about love, loss and friendship. There were so many twist and turns. The author did a great job of tying it all together. That ending got me. Where are my tissues?

4.0 out of 5 stars Even though this is still not a 5* for me, it is sooo close now!

I said in a former review that when Julia takes a decision as to where her life is going to be, that might be the end of the series, or not. Definitely not!
Julia is kinda-settled. She has taken some decisions, everything is fine with the family, her love life is going strong. But once again she is put in a situation where she has to act herself just to keep sane.
The story line in this book goes way back, uncovering connections between people who seem to be totally inculpable with regards to an accident on an icy road and a murder in the MC's restaurant.
There are lots of new character introductions - who knows which one will pop up again in later books? There is some potential for a colorful community.
For the first time, Julia borders on the naive, but she cuts the corner, so I still love her.
The storyline as such is SOOO good! An extremely enjoyable read.
I have bought #5. And since I enjoy switching from e-book to audio-book, I have been desperate enough to ask Barbara when the audio book will be available for #5. There you go.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best mystery in the series

I found that this book is the best mystery in this series.
Julia Snowden is again trying to solve another mysterious murder in her restaurant. However, this time the suspects are the new people of an older generation in her town, not familiar with her.
So far, I still enjoy this series and will continue with her next book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Unusual

The author chose a different and unusual way of presenting her book. It reminded me a bit of Agatha Christie...but also of Judy Bolton, a childhood favorite.

Of course I do not mean to say that this story was childish. It was that I had the same feelings after reading the story, which was a gentle mystery. In some of her actions Julia reminded me of Judy... I do not want to go into this with examples as I do not want to spoil the story.

I especially loved how Barbara Ross was able to make WINTER into sort of a character. It made the experience of reading this cozy mystery remarkable.
