Marked In Flesh (A Novel of the Others Book 4) Kindle Edition

4.7 4.7 out of 5 stars 7,109 ratings

In the fourth novel in Anne Bishop’s New York Times bestselling series, the Others will need to decide how much humanity they’re willing to tolerate—both within themselves and their community...

Since the Others allied themselves with the
cassandra sangue, the fragile yet powerful human blood prophets who were being exploited by their own kind, the dynamic between humans and Others has changed. Some, such as Simon Wolfgard, wolf shifter and leader of the Lakeside Courtyard, and blood prophet Meg Corbyn see the closer companionship as beneficial.

But not everyone is convinced. A group of radical humans is seeking to usurp land through a series of violent attacks on the Others. What they don’t realize is that there are older and more dangerous forces than shifters and vampires protecting the land—and those forces are willing to do whatever is necessary to safeguard what is theirs...

Another great addition to The Others series.

I can honestly say that I hate the Human First and Last Movement (HFL). They are awful people and they put in danger everyone else due to their selfish and ridiculous beliefs. Nothing made me happier than the boat scene. Finally!

“Do you know what the Sharkgard call humans on a ship?

So what's the plot for Marked in Flesh. As we know the humans are trying to gain more territory. To this end, they'll kill any Terra Indigine interfering with their plans. So it's humans vs humans & Terra Indigine. Nicholas Scratch is causing trouble through Thaisia and Cel-Romano. The name of the game is distraction and everyone is at risk. This includes the Courtyard and the areas were the Simple Life folk and the Intuits live. What the HFL is not counting on is on those beings called the Elders and their power.

“The first card was a beautifully rendered but terrifying representation of what Henry guessed was one of the Elders’ forms. Next was half a Wolf cookie. Last was a card that had a simple drawing of a smiley face. “That is sooooo wrong,” Merri Lee said, shuddering.

I'm enjoying this series so much. They are addictive. The world-building, plot, character development and humor is fantastic. Marked in Flesh adds depth to the long arc while introducing new characters like Jesse Walker, Tobias, Shelley Bookman interacting with Joe Wolfguard and Tolya Sanguinati.

I love how Hope Wolfsong is trying to find her own way. She, as Meg, is dealing with the best way to avoid the addiction to cutting. Thankfully, she has Jackson and Grace to stand by her.

Simon and Meg's romance is advancing, slowly but surely. The Trailblazer is still not sure what her feelings for Simon are and of course, Simon can't tell what love is even if it's hitting him on the face. If you are looking for a hot romance this series is not for you. Their relationship as friends- and hopefully mates- is unhurried.

“He gently kissed that scar and felt something changing inside him - just a flutter of change, there and gone, but leaving its mark.”

In the aftermath of the fight between the HFL and the terra indigene, only one question is unanswered:
How much human do the terra indigene want to keep?

Cliffhanger: No

As this is book 4 in the series, while I think you could enjoy it read on its on, there is a lot of world building and character background in the previous books, so I’d recommend reading the series in order.

The conflict between the HFL and the Others comes to a head in this book, so as my title suggests, there is a lot of suspense as we find out who is planning what, actions as those plans are carried out—and responded to—and a lot of emotions are evoked along the way.

I think this may be my favorite book in the series, because in spite of the heartbreak of some of the events (and there is some real heartbreak), I love how far Meg’s character has come in terms of controlling her life and her gift of prophecy. I also love how the ripple effect of what Simon and Meg are doing in the Lakeside Courtyard continues to spread, and, with the example of the Lakeside Courtyard in mind, some Others and humans change how they think about, and react to, each other.

So, with a plot that keeps pulling you along and characters that you care deeply about, this is another story where you’re cheering for the Others and their allies, and where there’s a great deal of satisfaction when enemies meet their comeuppance.

There is just something about this series that really grabs me. I’m not sure if it is the concept or the fact that it isn’t afraid to make most of the human population the bad guys. I think that it is a little refreshing to take a look at the world through the eyes of something other than just the human race. While I could see why some might think that it is a little preachy on the green front I never really felt that way and love the characters and the way they tend to look at the world as not just a place to make something because you can but because you should for the betterment of all.

**** There is no wasted, empty land in Thaisia. Every place on this continent is full of residents who need what the land already provides. Even the deserts have residents who live on what is available in those places. Even the coldest, remotest areas are not empty of life. When Mr. Scratch talks about the needs of other species, he is really talking about one species, the human species. He and his followers care for nothing else, which is why the terra indigene must care about all the rest.

—Elliot Wolfgard, when asked to respond to Nicholas Scratch’s speech ***

I’m in love with Meg and Simon really and even though there is so much more to the plot going on I adore the relationship those two share. Both are trailblazers in their own ways and as they learn each other they learn more about what it can mean to be human and to be an Other.

The best part of this series continues to be how different the Others are from shifters in other UF series. They see the world different, they are animals and should never ever be confused with humans. Even the ones who can look like humans sometimes.

*** “Are you afraid of becoming too human?” Meg asked.
“Yes.”
“Well, you won’t,” she said fiercely, squeezing his fingers. “You’re a Wolf, and even when you’re not a wolfy-looking Wolf, you’re still a Wolf. You’ve said so. Looking human or running a bookstore won’t change that.” ***

The best part of this particular book for me was getting some insight into the Elders, the others who live deeper in the forest that never took on Man’s shapes and are bigger, badder and the Teeth and Claws who will deliver justice. It isn’t your normal kind of justice, there is no trial and the actions of a few will decide for the many. Examples will be made and eventually maybe some of the humans will learn and carry the tales on to their kin.

This series is getting a little darker than it even started out. Sure there are fun moments but the humans who are a part of the Human First and Last movement are right up there with members of the Nazis Party. There are more deaths and brutal killings happening. The human pack keeps picking up new members but not because of happy situations, the lines have been drawn and more than one city is going to disappear.

Overall the story is really quite engaging and I find it hard to put the book down once I start. Tess and her crazy hair is still one of my favorite characters and I would never want to get on her bad side. I still long for a little more movement on the Meg/Simon relationship front. It is going snail crawl slow but it does seem fitting for the story so I’ll let that go. My favorite moment was when some human situation was explained to a wolf adolescent who learned that foreplay didn’t mean there would be four people to play but something altogether different.

The only issue I have are some of the repetitions of the previous stories to maybe sure you know what is going on. I don’t really need a refresher since I’m reading these one per week, but even if it was a year between books for me I think some of it is a little excessive. Still overall that didn’t skew my enjoyment of the book too much.

A great series if you are looking for something original with a smidge or romance but not much.

Bishop's books are addictive and hard to put down. The Others world is so vivid it's like you're there. She pulls you in and doesn't let go. I love every one I've read. The only thing I don't like is how fast I read them. I don't want them to end!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Others book 4

As a species humans really are pretty stupid. The Others may call us "clever meat" but really a large majority of us are so stupid you could almost call us suicidal. Rather than learn from the lessons the terra indigene tried to teach them in the previous book the members of HFL decide they're going to continue the attacks, this time with devastating consequences for both the Others and for humanity. Now the humans have the attention of the terra indigene Elders and they're throwing around words like "total extinction". All that remains to be seen is how many, or how few, people will survive when the Elders come calling.

I've been so hooked on this series that I devoured the first four books (about 2000 pages!) in five days, I made every excuse I could come up with to spend as much time as possible reading and I think I've actually given myself eye strain because today I'm having too much trouble focusing to dive into book five. Anyway, that's my really long winded way of telling you that I absolutely LOVE this series. Everything about this world is fascinating to me, I love that humans are at the bottom of the food chain, I've really enjoyed getting to know all the different characters who live in the Lakeside Courtyard and I was desperate to know what would happen when the Elders came calling.

Unfortunately we have to witness some pretty terrible attacks on the Others first though. Is it weird I was more upset when the werewolves were attacked than I was when humans were facing possible extinction? I honestly don't care if that's weird because very few humans in this world actually deserve to survive so I'd be quite happy to see most of them wiped off the face of the planet. Obviously I'm not talking about Meg, her human pack or even the Others friendly police officers but anyone who had a membership card for the HFL would make a very tasty Elder snack in my opinion!

Anyway, we finally get some pay off in terms of the Others fighting back, the Elders have watched, they've listened and they've learned and now they're ready to treat humans the way they deserve to be treated. My one slight complaint was that I wanted to see certain people suffer a bit more, I'm not normally one for graphic violence but I would actually have enjoyed more here! I also really wanted more Meg and Simon, of course we do see a lot of them but what I'm desperately waiting for is some payoff in the romance department. Can someone just smash their heads together and MAKE THEM KISS! Please, for the love of God lets bring this romance to the boil because the slow build that I was enjoying so much in the beginning is starting to kill me!

Yes, I am possibly a little too invested in this but I've spent more time in the book world than I have in the real one this week so the lines between fantasy and reality are starting to blur. Surely that's a sign on Anne Bishop's fantastic writing though? I can't recommend this series highly enough!
