Bricking It Kindle Edition

When siblings Dan and Hayley Daley inherit their late grandmother’s derelict Victorian farmhouse, it seems like a dream come true. All they have to do is fix the place up and sell it for a tidy profit!

Except—as anyone who has renovated an old house knows—things are never that easy.

The walls are rapidly crumbling around them, the architect is a certified lunatic, the budget is spiraling…and then there’s the disturbingly intelligent cow to worry about.

On top of all this, the renovation is being featured on a daytime reality TV show, and as soon as Great Locations presenter Gerard O’Keefe catches sight of Hayley’s first-floor balcony, he’s determined to woo her out of her ban on romance, whether she wants him to or not.

Will Dan and Hayley survive and sell up? Or will the whole thing collapse on them like a ton of bricks?

From bestselling author Nick Spalding comes a hilarious tale of life, love and dodgy plumbing.

Nick Spalding is an author who, try as he might, can't seem to write anything serious.

Before becoming a full-time author, he worked in the communications industry, mainly in media and marketing. As talking rubbish for a living can get tiresome (for anyone other than a politician), he thought he'd have a crack at writing comedy fiction - with a very agreeable level of success so far, it has to be said. Nick is now a multimillion seller. This flabbergasts him every single day.

Nick lives in Hampshire with his lovely (and extremely patient) wife. He's now in his late forties - and is rather annoyed at the universe about it, because it gave him no choice in the matter. He's also addicted to Thai food and roast potatoes (not together), still thinks Batman is just about the coolest thing on Earth, and has a dreadful singing voice.

I had a blast reading this story of two siblings renovating Granny's old house. So it made me feel puerile and like I just watched a Monty Python episode, but it made me laugh and I like to laugh! So I enjoyed myself, thoroughly. This book is good for people looking for something funny and heartwarming but not a heavy-handed tale of angst and drama. It's not full of angst, it's not a mystery novel, it's not going to necessarily keep you on the edge of your toes, but I strongly believe you will have fun and may even empathize with the entire situation if you've ever renovated anything or just have a sibling. I related more to the latter but both were fun.

Perhaps what I enjoyed most were the characters, main and supporting, told from the first person narratives of Danny and Hayley. There is also character development and no small amount of silliness and humor nicely distributed throughout the story. I don't have any complaints other than I did not want the story to end. I was not quite ready to leave the characters behind and find myself rereading some of the funnier parts.

This quote perfectly sums up the premise of the story.

WARNING: Slightly spoilery, if you want to come in knowing nothing about this book.

My sister and I thought all the shocks and surprises would come from the house itself during the renovation. That's what all the TV shows and websites tell you.

But in reality? A house is just bricks and mortar, and bricks and mortar are pretty predictable when you get right down to it.

It's the people inside you have to watch out for.

A fun easy story of the brother and sister renovating their crappy old farmhouse. I enjoyed how the characters developed and changed towards the end of the story. I liked that it was an easy story of ordinary people getting into ridiculous situations. My favourite bit was the scene of Danny in the attic, I laughed my head off! Stupid but funny! Not for the intellectuals, just a good fun read.

This is not "Property Brothers" talking about dry rot and painting another dreadful kitchen white. No, this is a laugh out loud romp of a brother and sister, together with an incredibly funny and vivid cast of characters renovating a house inherited from their grandmother. We meet Pat the cow , Mischa the Slovenian bombshell architectural assistant and Gerald the television host. Totally funny and totally entertaining. The renovation problems here run to accidentally burning the cannabis in the garden to chasing the cow out of the second story to detonating a bomb. Not to be missed!

I'm an enormous Nick Spalding fan binge read everything he's churned out. Highly recommended his split your sides belly laughing texting excerpts from his previous books in the middle of the night brilliant hilarity. I preordered and waited anxiously for the next tale and I'm sad to disappoint that Bricking It is boring. I found myself checking my reading speed to gauge when it would be over. Crap in a box funny but pails in comparison to crap in a pedal bin and a rip off of potty humor from the previous book that was hysterical. As much as I would love another chapter from the wildly hysterical previous books I love that Spalding didn't go for the easy success and ride his old characters into the ground even though if that happens I will buy every single one of them. I found the characters cliche and this book felt a little like it was phoned in almost like the television version of itself when you leave the theatre and say the book was so much better.

Sweet, funny story about an inherited house and the cast of characters who help or hinder the renovations. Pat the Cow steals the show.

I'm a big fan of renovation shows, so I thought I'd give this a try. First, it's heartwarming and funny. I would be happy to call 98% of these characters friend. I mean you need to use SOME sandpaper to bring out the grain, right? But then, mixed in with the usual problems that happens when flipping a house, Spalding brings laugh-out-loud bloopers than you will NEVER see on TV. At least not in the US. This is the 2nd time I've read this book and it's still full of surprises! One I will probably read again.

Bricking It, is one of the funniest books that I have read in a long time. It was hilarious and cringe worthy reading all the disasters that the two siblings had to go through to reach their end goal. This is definitely not something to be taken seriously, and if you are looking for something light to read, simply to pass the time, you will definitely be more than satisfied with this, and it was even better than that in the end. Not to mention the use of vocabulary by the author is spectacular. The ending for me was not the best in the world, a bit disappointing as everything seemed to magically work out in the end, as if it was rushed, however over all, a very good read.

A brutal comedy about a brother and sister duo who decide to renovate the country house their grandmother left them, in order to sell it at a better price.

Guess who's a fan of Nick Spalding now!

Bricking It despite all the slapstick, managed to take hold of my heart. While things fall in place apparently seamlessly, and any conflict that arose was resolved either in that chapter or the one after, there is a beguiling depth to the story. It was wonderful to see the two characters grow and evolve through all the turmoils (usually comic). The end was perfect. Sappy? Yes. But still perfect.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hilarious, embarrassing, realistic & upIifting

Never having read a Nick Spalding book I had no idea what to expect. As it was in the top 10 Amazon list I thought I'd give it a try - so pleased I did! This was the perfect read for me as the story was hilarious, embarrassing, realistic, and uplifting. Siblings Danny and Hayley Daley have been left a Victorian farmhouse by their grandmother. Unfortunately, the property has been abandoned for decades and is in Terrible disrepair. With the house potentially worth four times more renovated, they decide to renovate the house however, they have no experience in home renovation and not much money. Deciding to renovate changes their lives. Adding to the normal hysteria associated with renovating, the house is being filmed for a home improvement show, the architect is from a different planet and the contractor has a cockney accent that I loved to read out loud! The renovation has plenty of ups and downs, which means lots of comedy for the reader. You will die laughing when Gerard and the Great Locations crew arrive for the live filming show; one of the funniest scenes I've read. The author has created a funny, but also very clever, story. The characters are well-developed with very interesting personalities. I am very glad I decided to read this book - it made my weekend!
