The Shadow Cadets of Pennyroyal Academy Kindle Edition

4.8 4.8 out of 5 stars 261 ratings

Perfect for fans of The School for Good and Evil comes the eagerly anticipated follow-up to M. A. Larson's Pennyroyal Academy, hailed by the New York Times as a "breathtakingly exciting novel" with a heroine who "deserves a special place in a new pantheon of capable, feisty and, yes, admirable literary princesses."

A triumphant victory over the witches has proven that Princess Cadet Evie really does belong at Pennyroyal Academy. News of her heroism has traveled far and wide—inspiring a kingdom of grateful citizens and, when the new term starts, a wave of fresh Academy recruits.

While it’s good to be returning to the Academy as a second-class Cadet, things are not as they should be. Evie witnesses the vicious attack of an innocent woman—by a trio of
princesses. Pennyroyal’s Headmistress General, Princess Beatrice, is dubious about what Evie saw—princesses are enforcers of truth and justice, not thugs. But Evie isn’t so sure. Then, amidst piles of fan mail, she finds a letter with an ominous threat. A secret society has come out of the shadows with a wicked plan, putting the Academy in peril. It’s up to Evie and her friends to unravel the devious plot and save Pennyroyal Academy.

This sequel to the beloved, critically acclaimed
Pennyroyal Academy promises middle-grade readers a tale full of adventure and suspense.

Review

Praise for Pennyroyal Academy
"M. A. Larson has created a magical world of adventure
a world that shows who princesses truly are: people of character and courage and strength. No one rescues Pennyroyal princesses; they rescue themselves."—Reese Witherspoon

"
Pennyroyal Academy is one of those books you want to parse out and make last. It is a breathtakingly exciting novel, and Evie deserves a special place in a new pantheon of capable, feisty, and yes, admirable literary princesses."—The New York Times Book Review

"Flashes of inspiration light up a protagonist with plenty of spine . . . A sequel-worthy debut."
—Kirkus Reviews

"Forget the notion of traditional princesses . . . Larson has crafted a dark Grimm-like fairy tale, with teens training to defeat evil, save villages, and find their own identities in the process . . . Larson has left the door open for a welcome second year at Pennyroyal with Evie and her friends."
—Booklist

"[Larson] playfully nods to classic fairy tales . . . but he also imbues the fantasy with an important, affirming message for readers: 'You get to decide what you want to be. No one else.'"
—Publishers Weekly

"A perfect fit for fans of Hale's
Princess Academy and the novels of Gail Carson Levine."—BCCB

Very good continuation of the story. Starts slowed then the first story but builds to a rousing conclusion. Worth the read. I hope that the series ends on a high note.

Love this seller. Thebook is great!

I must say, I’ve tremendously taken great pleasure in books 1 & 2 of this series.

Yes, there’s your typical tropes, but doesn’t all Fantasy contain the foundations of similar plots, characters, and settings? It’s what they do with that rudimentary information, which stands out and makes a difference.
Can they spin a tale that comes across as original? Does it excel in some fashion, which puts a twist, or two, to all the other books out there? And finally, is it one that sticks with me long after I read it?

For myself, oh so humbly I say, M. A. Larson’s "Pennyroyal " series, the answers are yes, yes, and yes!

Yes, so far, the twists added to these two have kept me wondering how they’ll ever get out of this one!
A thousand possibilities come to mind while reading, yet I’m always delightfully bewildered in the ingenuity that’s applied by these soon to be princesses as they struggle and clash against vile and corrupt forces set to destroy everything they were raised on, and have come to know and love. Larson takes some of the oldest fairy tales out there, and incorporates them into the timeframe currently lived in by the princesses.

Yes again. At the precise moment you think you have it all figured out, there’s captivating and unanticipated twist/s, which throws the characters and plot into even more increased turmoil and mystery. For the demographics this is written for, their young minds are expanded by teaching them a few lessons. Eyes open; always look for what else could possibly be out there; friends and teamwork are some of the most important aspects of getting through the rough, dark times. Excellent life skills for them to learn to integrate and put into practice in their own lives.

And the third yes is answered by the fact that I was able to pick up this second one, and immediately remembered what had happened in the first as if I had only read it yesterday. When in fact, 8 months, and who knows how many other novels had passed through my hands and spirit, in between that time frame.

Obviously, for reasons of not wanting to include spoilers, my review is rather sketchy on details. Guess you’ll have to read it for yourself, and find out if you agree. 😉

Great book. Tween daughters love it. I did too. Couldn't put it down. Thrilling. Exciting. Creative and different. Reads like a movie. Hope they make a TV show outta these characters. This is the second book in what we hope will be a series.

I like how the main character struggles a little every chapter to be the greatest friend to her freinds, how she struggles to figure out who or what she is, and how through it all she dosnt care about titles like "Warrior Princess" all she cares about is being a good friend a good daughter sister and a little bit of a lover to Remmington. I dont like how short the book is but still a good series

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent continuation of a an already great book

This book shows once again, that M. A. Larson is a master of his discipline.

Featuring a great variety of defined characters without pushing them into stereotypes, it also further develops the relationships between the them, leading to wonderfully human interactions. This is probably the part the got the most improvement in relation to the first book, even though the first one did a great job already.

This story showcases the troubles of teenagers and (mostly young) adults without getting tasteless and preachy. It treats them with respect without tip-toeing around the issue and approaches its conflicts in general in a mature and well-thought-out way.

This book never tries to force a mood either. It's serious and tense or jovial and calm exactly when it needs to be, everything flowing perfectly natural.

And it's always nice to get a look into the authors personality through the "Acknowledgments".

What confuses me a bit is the use of the German verb "vertrieben" where the noun "Vertriebene" would have been more fitting as a name.Though maybe that just falls under "artistry".

I got this book today and read it through and I can hardly await the next one.
