Truly Madly Guilty Kindle Edition

3.9 3.9 out of 5 stars 63,359 ratings

The new novel from Liane Moriarty, the #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Husband’s Secret, Big Little Lies, and What Alice Forgot, about how sometimes we don’t appreciate how extraordinary our ordinary lives are until it’s too late.

Six responsible adults. Three cute kids. One small dog. It’s just a normal weekend. What could possibly go wrong?

In Truly Madly Guilty, Liane Moriarty turns her unique, razor-sharp eye towards three seemingly happy families.

Sam and Clementine have a wonderful, albeit, busy life: they have two little girls, Sam has just started a new dream job and Clementine, a cellist, is busy preparing for the audition of a lifetime. If there’s anything they can count on, it’s each other.

Clementine and Erika are each other’s oldest friends. A single look between them can convey an entire conversation. But theirs is a complicated relationship, so when Erika mentions a last minute invitation to a barbecue with her neighbors, Tiffany and Vid, Clementine and Sam don’t hesitate. Having Tiffany and Vid’s larger than life personalities there will be a welcome respite.

Two months later, it won’t stop raining, and Clementine and Sam can’t stop asking themselves the question: What if we hadn’t gone?

In Truly Madly Guilty, Liane Moriarty takes on the foundations our lives: marriage, sex, parenthood, and friendship. She shows how guilt can expose the fault lines in the most seemingly strong relationships, how what we don’t say can be more powerful than what we do, and how sometimes it is the most innocent of moments that can do the greatest harm.

Amazon.com Review

An Amazon Best Book of August 2016: Many writers have trouble plumbing the depths of a single character’s soul. Moriarty effortlessly dives deep in six different characters—the three married couples at a backyard barbeque in Sydney that goes horribly wrong. Chapters jump in time between the day of the barbecue and its aftereffects in the present, with the ripples of that evening disrupting and destroying relationships. The exact nature of the shock isn’t revealed until midway through the novel, and I admit, I kept thinking to myself, “Given the buildup, this better be a wonderfully awful revelation.” Moriarty comes through, fitting the seemingly unrelated puzzle pieces together into a tight and harrowing picture. She even wraps up a long-ago tragedy that befell a crotchety neighbor in what is perhaps a too-neat moment that adds an unnecessary bow on top. While it would do the book a disservice to call it “light,” it’s so briskly paced that the pages flash by, aiming the reader, ultimately, toward a gleam of hope at the end. --Adrian Liang, The Amazon Book Review

Not my favorite of hers...
Unpopular opinion coming right up🙈!Liane Moriarty generally writes with such ease that one can’t help but get lured in to her novels. Unfortunately, I must admit that this one just didn't quite hit the mark for me. Unfortunately, I felt that it lacked originality, was fairly predictable, and barely piqued my curiosity because the characterization was somewhat weak. I’ve read books of hers in the past, and know she has a true gift. However, this story didnt seem representative of her ability to consistently write a smart novel. The constant repetition of “before the barbecue” and “after the barbecue” was frustrating and served little purpose for me, as I had already gleaned the outcome. I never felt fondness for any of the characters, and the novel became somewhat of a chore to read at times. However, I did read it in a relatively short amount of time, so it was compelling. Also, there were some redeeming parts in this novel; such as the glimpses of Moriarty’s humor and insight.

Think your living your best life when something happens that changes everything. How do you get back? Do you really want too. Or do you find a new life?
Reviewed in the United States on October 14, 2016
It's over. And I am at a loss. What do I do now? My new friends have moved on, but I can't seem to do the same. I hate it when this happens! And for me, it happens a lot. I get so attached, they become a part of my everyday world. Then, suddenly, they move on and out of my life and I am left wondering if the characters in the next book I read will have such a profound effect on my mind.

I have finished Liane Moriarty's Truly, Madly Guilty and Clementine, Erika, Holly, Ruby and the rest of these amazing characters have left me feeling like I have let go of a few new friends. They came into my life and now, their stories told, have moved on and I miss them.

That, to me, is the beauty in the writing of Liane Moriarty. She gets into the minds of the characters and shares both the extreme and trivial details that make each character behave in the way that they do and this gives you a feeling that you actually know these people. You have been with them through thick and thin. You have seen what has brought them to their knees and walked with them as they pulled themselves up, dusted off their britches and moved forward with their lives.

This story is written in 3rd person, but each person tells a new chapter and that person has almost 1st person ability to tell not only the background, and what they are thinking, but almost what is going on with everyone else in a 1st person type of viewpoint.

This book is a lot like Big Little Lies, in that you know there was something big that happened, but you don't know exactly what or how, but that it affected everyone who was involved in quite a discernible way. You know that the lives of these people are all different after the Bar-B-Que at Tiffany and Vid's house. But what you learn are the events that led up to that fateful day and how every person who was there is changed and challenged after that day. What you don't know is what actually happened.

That is the beauty of this both Truly Madly Guilty and Big Little Lies. You know what the outcome is, but you don't have any real idea of what caused the problem until the characters have pretty much gotten themselves and their lives almost back on track. Add to that all of the background information given through flashbacks leading up to the moment of crisis and you end the story almost back at the beginning, but you know the entire story which leaves you feeling as though you know the cast of characters completely.

And, if you are like me, you miss them when they leave.

Caroline Lee is the narrator for the Truly Madly Guilty audio, just as she was for Big Little Lies, and she is absolutely magical. Her inflections and change of style for each character exactly matches what you would imagine each of them would sound. Especially her characterization of Vid that is spot on and wonderful. Plus, at the end of the book, there is a Q&A between Lee and Moriarty that is quite interesting and fun to listen to them talk about the characters from their perspectives.

And, just like Big Little Lies, Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman have picked up the rights to Truly Madly Guilty for a movie deal. I can hardly wait! Big Little Lies will be a 7 part series on HBO hopefully airing soon!

There are authors whose books are automatic pre-orders for me, often without even knowing the subject, simply because I have read a number of their other works and loved them so I just assume I will love any subsequent releases as well. Liane Moriarty is one of those authors for me. I have read and loved all of her other books and loved them so much that when I saw she had a new book coming out, I pre-ordered it months before it came out. I even planned the other books I would read around this book so that I could start reading it as soon as it showed up on my Kindle. After six long and somewhat painful days of reading this book, I finally finished it and have to say that this is the first of Liane Moriarty's books with which I have been disappointed.

As many other reviewers have mentioned, Truly Madly Guilty centers around a barbecue and three couples and their families. Sam and Clementine have a good marriage and two little girls, Holly and Ruby. Everything is going well with them in their lives. Oliver and Erika also have a great marriage but they desperately want children. Vid and Tiffany are the third couple and own the house where the barbecue takes place. They have a daughter, Dakota who spends every spare minute reading. Clementine and Erika have been friends since they were little girls and when Erika extends a last-minute invitation to Sam, Clementine and their daughters to come to Vid and Tiffany's barbecue, they accept. What happens at the barbecue ends up changing all of their lives, including others who aren't at the party.

In typical Liane Moriarty fashion, this book is filled with quirky dialogue, a scenic Australian backdrop and a host of three-dimensional characters. There are a lot of details and character development in this book and we really get to know the characters, their histories and why they are the way they are. In her other books, I've found this style of writing to greatly develop the story and it's made the novel that much more enjoyable. I feel most of her books have a good balance of character development and plot. This novel, however, almost has too much detail and character development and not enough plot because we spend so much time reading about how the characters think and feel only to barely make any progress on the plot. In fact, it seemed like the story trudged along and I had a very hard time continuing to read it but I forced myself to keep reading. Unfortunately with so many details, the majority of the book takes place only over the span of a week or two, with a couple chapters spent on what happens a few months afterward.

I had such high hopes for this book and was so excited for it to come out but now after having read it, I am unfortunately disappointed with it. I enjoyed Liane Moriarty's usual quirky style of writing and her good character development but not enough of the book focuses on the plot. There is definitely emotion, sadness, and dry humor within these pages and I got caught up in certain parts of the story. I felt for the characters but I mostly felt frustrated with this book and was extremely happy to finally finish it. Some readers may enjoy it but if you are also like me and have loved her other books, you may find this one not nearly as good. I'll still read any other books Liane Moriarty writes but I would've been happy had I not read this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars The power of simplicity
Reviewed in Germany on September 5, 2018
Liane Moriarty has always been extraordinary in writing about the complexity and more strikingly, rawness of human emotions, but this book really takes the cake! It's not a comedy, nor is it a mystery, or even romance. It's just, life… in its sometimes irritating, sometimes comforting and other times shocking manifestation! What I truly enjoy, however, is Liane Moriarty showing us how more often than not, a simple commitment -- the willingness and dediction -- is all it takes to start making things right again!
