The Visitor (The Graveyard Queen Book 4) Kindle Edition

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 734 ratings

The Graveyard Queen is called upon to solve an age-old mystery that threatens her life—and her sanity—in this suspenseful urban fantasy series.

My name is Amelia Gray, the Graveyard Queen. Restoring abandoned cemeteries is my profession, but my true calling is deciphering the riddles of the dead. Now I’m being summoned to solve a legendary mystery. Half a century after their mass death, Ezra Kroll’s disciples lie unquiet, their tormented souls trapped within the walls of Kroll Cemetery, waiting to be released by someone strong and clever enough to solve the puzzle.

Legend has it that the answer is hidden within the strange headstone inscriptions and intricate engravings—and that uncovering the mystery may come at a terrible price. Every lead I follow, every clue I unravel brings me closer to an unlikely killer and to a destiny that will threaten my sanity and a future with my love, John Devlin.

I have been a fan of this series since I picked up the first one years ago. If you haven't read the previous books I highly recommend it. The first three books are very good and I wasn't expecting that the fourth book would blow me away and totally creep me out at the same time.

I love the main character, Amelia, and have really grown attached to her over the past three books. I love how she has really grown throughout the books. The story is set in Charleston and as a southern born and raised woman I appreciate that the author understands the South. I think each cemetery is each it's own character and you feel like you are really there with Amelia.

I purchased both the Kindle version and the audio version so that I could listen while driving. The audio version is just about perfect and I love the narrator.

Although the ending did complete the story arc for this book, it did leave the reader wanting more at the end. I wish I had a time machine to fast forward and grab the next book. I can't wait to find out what happens next.

I remained enthralled with the characters from start to finish. And angry at John for not opening up to Amelia. But also at Amelia for not persisting in getting answers from him. I felt so hurt for her but still wanted to shake her for not standing up to him. He would not be a fella a girl would be able to count on even if they were someone they loved.

Perfect next chapter in Amelia Gray's story! Each book brings us deeper into the mystery of who she really is and finding out how connected all the characters are is a fantastic surprise. The plot (as always) moves quickly and even though this is the fourth book in the series, the author still can throw curveball surprises at the reader in this book. Without putting any spoilers out there, the way this book ended leaves me so ready for the next one (luckily, I don't have to wait long, The Sinner is coming on September 27th!).

My favorite thing about Ms. Stevens' books is that she concentrates on the supernatural mystery part of the plot, with just a little bit of romance put in that is actually relevant and moves the plot forward, rather than just for the sake of having a romance in the book. I'm not a fan of typical "paranormal romance" books, I don't want to read about vampire/werewolf/alien and human relationships. (Not a bad genre, just not my thing.) This series is just about perfect.

I like this author's style of writing. Characters are compelling. Storyline is rich
Not to crazy about the ending but it I suppose with a series the reader must be left hanging.

“Spirits can’t step over or navigate crooked pathways. A superstitious community would have been especially cautious with suicides. The ghosts of those who take their own lives are considered notorious wanderers. That probably explains the high walls that surround the cemetery. In the old days, they would have buried the bodies facedown to disorient them.”
“The things you know.”

Overall I like this series. It has this eerie quality to it and I really enjoy the southern drawl of a book, I’m pretty sure a book can have a southern drawl. It is this slow and easy almost swaying in the wind kind of vibe sometimes.

I probably should have reread the other books going into this one though. I had forgotten a lot of things about the secret order of the Coffin and the Claw and how Devlin was involved with them in the first place. I just felt like I was playing catch up a little too much. So if you can reread at least the last book going into this one.

I was really hoping that after the events of the last book that Devlin would be a believer of at least some things supernatural but he is still forever the skeptic and the fist half of the story I felt like Amelia told me a million times how they were drifting apart. I mean a small part was shown but overall it was just her telling the reader that things weren’t perfect between them. Which was sometimes strange as you could tell how much Devlin cared about her but it is a weird relationship where both parties seemed to be keeping all kinds of secrets from the other and you knew some big thing would have to happen for them to either start really trusting each other with everything in their lives or that a split would happen.

I have read the other books for the ghost stories but also for the forbidden romance of Amelia and Devlin so I really hope they work that out. But because of the slow paced nature of the book it seemed to take a long time for things to really get going.

But there are ghosts and a mystery to solve. We also have Amelia who has not let the other side know she can see them and that comes with a whole new bag of troubles as the spiritual realm keeps trying to contact her and she isn’t she if they are friend or foe. Still that whole story was extremely interesting and I loved learning more about her special powers and what they are evolving into.

In Short - I really liked the ghost storyline of this but the relationship aspect left me wanting a lot more. I know the next book is out but I think I’ll wait until #6 is also done so I can read them back to back. I think that one is supposed to close out this storyline.

The 2 star deduction is for the meandering that we have to endure and repetition of the relationship angst.

I've been reading Amanda Stevens books for years, but I think she's really coming into her own with this series, and with this book in particular. The setting--Charleston--is one of my favorites and she describes it perfectly. I feel like I'm strolling down the sidewalks every time I start to read. And her main character, Amelia, is just as familiar to me as the streets are. But this time, it seems like she's got a darker side coming out that I've never seen before. I know I'm going to be surprised by the twists and turns because I always am with a book by this author but this time...wow. Kroll Cemetery and everything that goes on there is so creepy. I don't know how she comes up with this stuff but I hope she keeps it coming.

It was ok....not as intriguing to me as the first three books .... leaves a lot of unanswered questions that hopefully will be answered in future books. There is one 'scene' in the book in particular that seems to be a complete oversight by the editors where a mobile phone keeps ringing but it is never linked up in the storyline ...unless I completely missed it somewhere along the line. The book ends pretty much with another semi-cliff hanger which is fine.....I expected that. I look forward to the next book in the series.

It’s not the first time I’m amazed by the writing style of Amanda Stevens that can create an atmospheric setting with chilling undertones that keeps the heart pounding and the sweet love story at the same time.
The Graveyard Queen has it all. I’m surprised it’s not a well known series because they are definitely great!

This was a very well written story that normally would be too dark for me, but at this time of year was perfect.

The only problem with the book (as far as I can see) is that if one reads the whole series (as I did) there are a lot of repetition. I find that it somewhat like when you have a good friend that tells wonderful stories that everyone wants to hear, but tends to always include a couple that she tells over and over.

But do not let me make you miss this story--it flows wonderfully and is quite good!

Loved it as a follow up in the Graveyard Queen series. This novel is a little darker, and delves into Amelia's past with a surprising twist, that might affect her relationship with Devlin. Looking forward to the next novel.

4.5 stars. Such a joy after such a long absence. A chilling ghost story in the classic sense, I love these stories about a cemetery restorer with something extra. The author creates vivid imagery allowing the reader to have their own "visions" as they read. Very satisfying after a long wait.
