Beyond the Ice Limit: A Gideon Crew Novel (Gideon Crew Series Book 4) Kindle Edition

BEYOND THE ICE LIMIT
That thing is growing again. We must destroy it. The time to act is now...
With these words begins Gideon Crew's latest, most dangerous, most high-stakes assignment yet. Failure will mean nothing short of the end of humankind on earth.
Five years ago, the mysterious and inscrutable head of Effective Engineering Solutions, Eli Glinn, led a mission to recover a gigantic meteorite--the largest ever discovered--from a remote island off the coast of South America. The mission ended in disaster when their ship, the Rolvaag, foundered in a vicious storm in the Antarctic waters and broke apart, sinking-along with its unique cargo-to the ocean floor. One hundred and eight crew members perished, and Eli Glinn was left paralyzed.
But this was not all. The tragedy revealed something truly terrifying: the meteorite they tried to retrieve was not, in fact, simply a rock. Instead, it was a complex organism from the deep reaches of space.
Now, that organism has implanted itself in the sea bed two miles below the surface-and it is growing. If it is not destroyed, the planet will be doomed. There is only one hope: for Glinn and his team to annihilate it, a task which requires Gideon's expertise with nuclear weapons. But as Gideon and his colleagues soon discover, the "meteorite" has a mind of its own-and it has no intention of going quietly...

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Preston and Child's exciting fourth Gideon Crew novel (after 2014's The Lost Island) satisfactorily resolves the cliffhanger with which they ended their 2000 thriller, The Ice Limit. Previously, eccentric billionaire Palmer Lloyd learned that the largest meteorite ever known had been found on an uninhabited island at the very tip of South America. The expedition he funded to retrieve it, under the leadership of Eli Glinn of Effective Engineering Solutions, ended with the sinking of the ship meant to bring the highly unusual meteorite back to New York City. Most of the expedition members perished, and the meteorite sank to the ocean floor. Six years later, Crew, who has been diagnosed with terminal cancer, agrees to accompany a second mission with the objective of destroying the thing with a nuke. That challenge is heightened when evidence emerges that it's actually a sentient alien. The bestselling authors maintain suspense throughout, and they throw in some original ideas that offset some familiar action tropes. Agent: Eric Simonoff, WME. (May)\n

Review

"Preston & Child take all of the various elements from classic horror and sci-fi films and novels and spin them together to write what begins as an action adventure, but soon delves into paranoid terror ... scary good fun."―Associated Press

"The always sensational duo is back with a work that is as exciting and intriguing as it is fast-paced."―
Suspense Magazine

"Relentless mayhem ... [a] thrill-a-minute read. Science fiction as action adventure, the sort of book primed for screen treatment."
Kirkus Reviews

"Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child are no strangers to breaking new ground, but the shovel they use for the beautifully conceived BEYOND THE ICE LIMIT is tipped with gold. Forget thrill on every page - this book seems to have one in every paragraph, starting with "That thing is growing again. We must destroy it."....BEYOND THE ICE LIMIT is pure fun, its wildly imaginative premise and take-no-prisoners plotting making this reading entertainment of the highest order."―
Providence Sunday Journal

"
The Lost Island, the third novel to feature master thief and brilliant scientist Gideon Crew, is another clever and compelling tale from Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child....The stellar writing that readers expect from Preston and Child is still in abundance, and they balance the line between page-turning suspense and ancient history."―Associated Press on The Lost Island

"Sparkling...Gideon refreshingly doesn't fit the superhero mold, and the enigmatic Amy is more than his equal in daring and intelligence."―
Publishers Weekly on The Lost Island

Gideon's Corpse is a thriller that ranks high among their many co-authored offerings to date."―BookReporter.com

"A rollicking tour-de-force. The eponymous Gideon Crew would be equally comfortable smack in a Ludlum tempest or striding onto the set of the Ocean's Eleven franchise. And we can all look forward to the next appearance of Mr. Gideon Crew in the not-so-distant future."―
David Baldacci on Gideon's Sword

All the Preston/Child books are good, and if Beyond the Ice Limit is not quite in the top tier, it's still an excellent scientific thriller. Two of the duo's most intriguing characters, engineering genius Eli Glinn and the multi-talented adventurer Gideon Crew, join forces to seek out and destroy the alien organism whose enormous "seed" was planted in the seabed in The Ice Limit. Glinn, who thinks he can predict and engineer anything and any one, not surprisingly thinks this is a task only he is qualified to perform. He outfits a ship with ROVs, submersibles, and a nuclear warhead. The alien organism, though, is far different, far more powerful, and more difficult to deal with than even Glinn envisioned. The gigantic creature they nickname "the Baobab" is in many ways the most interesting, if terrifying, character in the book. The alien is brilliantly imagined, the suspense constant, and the pacing perfect as scientists and crew (no pun intended) race against a threat that is not about to sit there and let itself be nuked. As always with these authors, the technological aspects are superbly described.
I have two nitpicks, one small and one large. The small one is that the warhead they describe would not have come from the very large Soviet-era missile they ascribe it to: it would have been a tactical missile like the SS-21. The big one is an issue that threatens to mess up this whole fictional universe. The all-purpose medicinal root discovered in The Lost Island would have changed the whole world. If everyone got it, people would stop dying, likely leading to ecological catastrophe: if only some people had it, there would be constant violence and wars over access to it. Yet no one in this book ever MENTIONS it except for its effects on Eli and Gideon.
If you can overlook that, you'll like everything else about this book: good characters, good gadgets, and nonstop thrills. Great work, gentlemen!

I think this is their best book in years, and I read all of them eventually. There is very little drag here, and Gideon is an engaging hero who brings us back into the story of the The Ice Limit without being burdened by it. The real payoff here, though, is for those waiting for some kind of resolution to the story of The Ice Limit, both for external events and for the characters involved. This book pays off hugely in that regard, revisiting old characters and tragic losses with great impact. Gideon brings his own story and weaknesses to the mix, but he is just enough of a newcomer that we can witness events through him and know what they mean more than he does at the moment. I don't want to say too much and spoil the story, but we are given it from exactly the person we need to see it from at that particular point in the story. Things move along at a very good pace, and one of the earlier scenes, where Gideon dives to the wreck, is one of the most suspenseful and claustrophobic I've read in a long time. Things only go haywire from there, but of course, that's the point. Who wants to read a book where "they all went to the right spot, nothing unexpected happened, everyone behaved well, and things went swimmingly, but the coffee machine broke, oh no"? Yeah, me either. What's compelling is reading how everything goes to hell very quickly and how our heroes, all with their own brands of smarts and resourcefulness, manage to get themselves out of trouble (and usually into more and different trouble). Great book for a long weekend, when you can hermit and just read uninterrupted for a while.

Having read The Ice Limit a few years ago I wondered why Preston/Child did not complete the book. I wanted to know what happened after the seed fell into the ocean but nothing ever developed until now. Wow! Great ending for a great two book series. I kind of had my own ideas what would be a good ending to Ice Limit if it was continued and I was way off. Preston/Child did a wonder job of continuing the story line and the characters along with Gideon Crew. A nice addition to the characters I might add.

The story moves along quickly and gets you involved from the first few pages and doesn't let up. Lots of suspense and gives you the creeps with the description of the worms. I only wish there was an illustration of the Baobab in the ocean and that would have really made the story even better. A must read especially if you read the Ice Limit. Great stuff!!!

If you like SciFi and the thriller genre you won't be disappointed. The characters have been thought out with very interesting psychological profiles, the science fiction is well developed and the story will grip you.
