Romeo and/or Juliet: A Chooseable-Path Adventure Kindle Edition

4.7 4.7 out of 5 stars 398 ratings

The New York Times bestseller from the author of How to Invent Everything and To Be or Not To Be

Romeo loves Juliet. Or Rosaline. And Juliet loves Romeo. Or Viola. Or Orlando. It's Shakespeare as you've never played him before.

In this choose-your-own-path version of
Romeo and Juliet, you choose where the story goes every time you read! What if Romeo never met Juliet? What if Juliet got really buff instead of moping around the castle all day? What if they teamed up to take over Verona with robot suits? Whatever your adventure, you're guaranteed to find lots of romance, lots of epic fight scenes, and plenty of questionable decision-making by very emotional teens.

All of the endings—there are over a hundred—feature beautiful illustrations by some of the greatest artists working today, including
New York Times bestsellers Kate Beaton, ND Stevenson, Randall Munroe, and Jon Klassen.

Packed with exciting choices, fun puzzles, secret surprises, terrible puns, and more than a billion possible storylines,
Romeo and/or Juliet offers a new experience every time you read it. You can choose to play as Romeo or Juliet (obviously) but you can also play as both of them, or as Juliet's nurse, or, if you're good, you can even unlock a fourth playable character! That's right. We figured out how to have unlockable characters in books. Choose well, and you may even get to write the world's most awkward choose-your-own sex scene.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

With Shakespearean and classic romantic literature being introduced in high school, this book seems a perfect fit for teens. After all, Romeo and Juliet are teens, and they're in love—unless they're not. It's up to readers to choose. Maybe Romeo can't get past his lust for the unattainable Rosaline, or he'd rather hang out with his best buds Mercutio and Benvolio. Maybe Juliet follows her parents' advice and marries Tom Paris, or she flees the Capulet household to escape the arranged marriage and become a pirate. If the pair do manage to meet and fall in love, can they escape a tragic end? North has turned Shakespeare's play about star-crossed lovers into a seemingly endless game of choices, with the ability to play as either Romeo or Juliet and a guarantee that any path taken will turn into an outrageously silly adventure. For some threads, North cleverly inserts original passages from Shakespeare's work to heighten the comic effect. Gamers will be attracted to the format, and fans of North's comic book series "The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl" will already be familiar with his signature brand of humor. More than 80 artists have contributed an eclectic mix of original illustrations that highlight the hilarity of many of the possible endings. VERDICT Even incurable romantics are sure to find this a fun parody and a welcome diversion from the required reading list.—Cary Frostick, formerly at Mary Riley Styles Public Library, Falls Church, VA

Winner of the American Library Association's Alex Award for the best adult books that appeal to teen audiences

“Shakespeare with even more sex, cryptography, time travel and alternate endings than the original! Ryan North is the only writer I know who's smart enough and funny enough to pull this off.” —Lev Grossman, author of the
Magicians trilogy

“[A] ridiculously fun book…Ryan North is awesome…It is as hilarious and funny and strange as you would imagine…so crazy, so much fun…It’s fantastic,” —
BookRiot

“This book/game is so entertaining and downright hilarious that I guarantee you will... have an amazing time. In fact, you’ll probably end up buying multiple copies to give to your friends and family.” —
Geek & Sundry

“Written with the finest distilled charm and genuine enthusiasm. Entertaining and extremely satisfying.” —Kate Beaton, author of

Praise for previous work by Ryan North:

“Reference mixed with irreverence--that's what makes
To Be or Not to Be so much fun.”—Slate

“Ryan North's
The Best of Dinosaur Comics: 2003-2005 A.D. had me howling with laughter and passing the book around to whomever I could lay hands on to point out particularly good strips. Dinosaur Comics is an unlikely gem of a webcomic.”—Cory Doctorow, Boing Boing

“Machine of Death is a marvelous collection, riddled with intelligence, creative reach, and a frankness that makes the best use of the central gimmick.”—Tasha Robinson,
The Onion A.V. Club

“This Is How You Die is a brilliantly addictive book that reads like a series of existential, death-obsessed Twilight Zone episodes. Very highly recommended.”—Seth Grahame-Smith, author of Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter

Great for drumming up student enthusiasm
Ever feel frustrated with the depressing ending of Romeo and Juliet? Have the urge to slap their pining, pathetic, whiny Shakespearian "Millennialism"? Well then you're sure to love this truly unique read that allows you to "rewrite" the Bard and change the stars! Also great for getting students excited to learn Shakespeare.

I read every page of this book. Yes, it was that good. (I even found one ending that I missed because of an unfortunate page break in section 423, but I *think* I can forgive that.) In some ways it's better than its prequel  To Be or Not To Be  (TBONTB). First, the branching narrative structure is more internally consistent. You can tell that great attention was paid to the concurrent Romeo and Juliet timelines to make sure that the two of them match up temporally. Some of the choices are temporally dependent too; unlike the text-based computer games of old where you can go back and forth between points A and B in an infinite loop indefinitely and it will take zero time, in this book if you take too long (in book time) to make a choice, dire consequences can ensue! It's very clever, and if you are feeling nostalgic for the aforesaid text-based computer games there's an entire subadventure in the book for that too!

How else is this better than TBONTB? Well, TBONTB has only *one* book-within-a-book, and this book includes *at least* three. It's also more self-referential and more meta than TBONTB. And--surprisingly this is an important factor--the physical book itself is lighter, which makes it easier to flip back and forth among alternate paths. This brings me to the one feature I wish the book had, which is some way to go backwards, since it's so easy to get lost. Just some way to resolve problems like "I'm at 132 and forgot how I got here, how do I go back?" would be great.

Of course TBONTB was an amazing book to begin with, and all the good stuff from that book is still here in this one: awesome illustrated endings, half of them involving deaths *that you look forward to*; smart, modern commentary on Shakespeare (and sometimes on life and love); and, of course, fancy-vs.-plain versions of famous passages from Shakespeare that enhance your appreciation of Shakespeare's poetry (one of them in slideshow format!).

Now obviously (looking at some of the other reviews) this book isn't for everyone. If you don't like Dinosaur Comics you probably won't like the style of this book. Are some of the endings ridiculous and silly? Yes, but that's the whole point. Me, I literally laughed out loud every other page. There's also something very satisfying about telling your friends that you're reading Romeo and/or Juliet and you're stuck at a section where you have to get them past ninjas.

P.S. The unlockable character totally and completely puts the book over the top. I would give 5.5 stars if I could!

Note that this review is largely be in view of someone who read the first book, To Be or Not To Be, which I also recommend.

First thing's first, this book actually solved a major issue I had with To Be or Not To Be, which was that in that book you had the path that followed the original play Hamlet, and it felt largely like the other paths were just sprouting off this main one. There were a few places where a totally new storyline would sprout, but for the most part you had to read through a lot of one path to find a number of endings. With this book the paths that deviate from the original early on feel more like their own stories, and there are numerous locations where you can veer off but then return to the original story, so if you want to read to the end of the normal story more than once you have option so you don't reread a lot of things.

Another area this book improves on the first is simply how it's designed. The first gave every choice at least its own page, which led to a lot of empty space. This one divides the choices into sections, so most of every page is utilized. There was only one spot where this was problematic, as one section had two choices listed but the second choice was on the second page, so it could be easily missed. Also: I know nobody actually cares about the design. I'll move on.

This book has not one but two story-within-a-stories (not counting the Romeo and/or Juliet-within-a-Romeo and/or Juliet), and one is about drugs and amazing and has an adorable Puck (thanks to one Andrew Hussie). A few other outlandish things from To Be or Not To Be return as well, such as ghost time travel, but I actually felt the returning outlandish things weren't utilized as interestingly as in the first book.

But this book does have new outlandish things that are amazing, such as controlling more than one character at once or unlockable characters. Yes, you can unlock a character by completing a certain path. It's pretty obvious which path it is, though. Maybe next book Ryan can fit an unlockable character into an unexpected path. Come on, let us choose a story using one of those robot suits!

Ultimately this story is hilarious, and that's the point. Whether it's the witty or silly characters (definitely the best-written Friar Lawrence ever), the Shakespearean prose reduced to plain English/bullet points/power point slides, or just the ridiculous narration (find out how he gets out of writing a sex scene!!), every path has something to laugh at. In the end I would have to say this book is an improvement on the first, and book scientists that I totally didn't pay off thought that was impossible!

Interesting take on book writing making it like a game with choices.

Can get rather annoying having so many choices, since you need to bookmark pages where choices are ('crossroads'), or you need to start ALL Over again and again just to get to junctions with choices to see what would be the plot in other scenarios and recall what you selected.
So that gets boring at times to re-read and flip to that location back and forth.
Need a program or mindmap tool to mark your choices and page numbers, lol.
Easier just reading short stories with variations as a compilation...

Author has cool takes on this story with entertaining options and descriptions.

One of the best choose your own adventures I have ever read. So hard to put down! Bought it as a gift, but now I might have to buy another copy! Very entertaining for those that know Shakespeare and people that completely don't. Tons of guest artists make page turning and endings so enjoyable! You can also unlock other characters such as Juliet's nurse in a sequence called Nurse Quest and play mini adventures in dream sequences based on other Shakespeare works such as A Midsummer Night's Dream. The adventures and endings can be outrageous and silly, but make complete sense in other areas. For example, if you play as Juliet, you can have the option of just telling your parents the truth about you getting married instead of fake killing yourself. Their response may surprise you. You can avoid the senseless love tragedy of the original, but it is up to you to figure out how... Oh, and if you are up to the challenge, yes: you can get to a point where you are Romeo AND Juliet, just like in the title of the book.

I bought this three years ago for my boyfriend for Christmas but we didn't read far into it until tonight. Holy moly, I read continuously (aloud) to my boyfriend for three hours. So hard to put down because the humour and utterly ridiculous story lines are addicting! We killed ourselves laughing at every page!

This is a great source of entertainment because there's over a hundred different endings! Romero's silly death endings are my favourite so far. I can't wait to find all the "unlockable" characters!
Highly recommended this as a gift!
