The Queen of Blood: Book One of The Queens of Renthia Kindle Edition

4.3 4.3 out of 5 stars 1,090 ratings

Ignite your imagination with this immersive fantasy read!

Set in the magical world of Renthia, The Queen of Blood is Sarah Beth Durst’s ambitious entry into adult epic fantasy. With the danger of Peter Brett’s The Warded Man, heart of Naomi Novik’s Uprooted, and lyricism of Patrick Rothfuss’ The Name of the Wind, this is the first chapter in a series destined to be a classic.

Everything has a spirit: the willow tree with leaves that kiss the pond, the stream that feeds the river, the wind that exhales fresh snow . . .

But the spirits that reside within this land want to rid it of all humans. One woman stands between these malevolent spirits and the end of humankind: the queen. She alone has the magical power to prevent the spirits from destroying every man, woman, and child. But queens are still just human, and no matter how strong or good, the threat of danger always looms.

With the position so precarious, young women are chosen to train as heirs. Daleina, a seemingly quiet academy student, is under no illusions as to her claim to the throne, but simply wants to right the wrongs that have befallen the land. Ven, a disgraced champion, has spent his exile secretly fighting against the growing number of spirit attacks. Joining forces, these daring partners embark on a treacherous quest to find the source of the spirits’ restlessness—a journey that will test their courage and trust, and force them to stand against both enemies and friends to save their land . . .  before it’s bathed in blood.

From the Back Cover

An idealistic young student and a banished warrior become allies in a battle to save their realm in this first volume of a mesmerizing new epic fantasy series filled with political intrigue, violent magic, malevolent spirits, and thrilling adventure

But queens are still only human, and no matter how strong or good they are, the threat of danger always looms.

Because the queen’s position is so precarious, young women are specially chosen to train as her heirs. Daleina, a seemingly quiet academy student, is under no illusions as to her claim to the throne, but simply wants to right the wrongs that have befallen the land. Meanwhile, the disgraced champion Ven has spent his exile secretly fighting against the growing number of spirit attacks. When Daleina and Ven join forces, these daring partners embark on a treacherous quest to find the source of the spirits’ restlessness—a journey that will test their courage and trust, and force them to stand against both enemies and friends to save their land . . .before it’s bathed in blood.

Excellent book, and great condition!
5 Stars
Excellent book, and great condition!
This book, by far, is pretty amazing! A lot of detail among the characters and good descriptions that showcase their personalities and characteristics! I received the book in near mint condition; just a little tare at the top of the book covering, but yet still descent enough to be entirely content with.

I took a chance on this book – not that I thought it was going to be bad or anything, it sounded so good – but I never read adult fantasy. I usually find it incredibly boring, even though fantasy is my favorite genre. I’d just rather read YA. But this one caught my attention when I was at Last Bookstore once because I loved the cover so much and it kept popping up on my radar. One day, I was perusing BookBub, seeing what was on sale and this popped up and I thought, okay its time. I’m stuck, I’m not reading anything. Its time. I’m so glad I did because it ended up as one of my favorite books of the year.

The world that was built in this novel is GORGEOUS. Everything from the characters to the queendom to the magic system to the world itself was just gorgeous and completely jumped off the page. I was sold immediately into this world because I truly could picture it all. The spirits and the magic was so interesting and so unique from anything I’ve really read before – it was an interesting take on almost elemental magic. I liked that Sarah built everything so well but I didn’t feel like I normally feel when I read adult fantasy – get to the point. Everything in her world made sense without her having to go on for pages and pages about how everything worked and I seriously appreciated that.

I also really enjoyed the characters. I loved that we got two very different characters, different generations but it really gave a window into what the world was. A world-weary champion and a bright, if not totally talented, young student – its an interesting pair and I liked the way they worked together, I thought it was a brilliant partnership and I can’t wait to see how that unfolds in the next book.

I also just love where this book headed. I honestly am trying really really hard to keep it spoiler free. Honestly, it felt sort of…like it would have not made sense if Daleina was queen easily because she struggles with the magic and control over the spirits the entire novel and she definitely gets better but I don’t know, I needed more. And I got it. The end BLEW my mind, totally threw me for a loop and was absolutely devastating. I honestly did NOT see that coming at all and I was in shock. Then I saw the title for the second book and it made a lot more sense but still. It threw me and I really appreciated that as well. That doesn’t happen often anymore.

Honestly, this book was one of the BEST books I read in 2019. Its beautiful and rich, the magic system is incredibly interesting, I liked the two main characters…a LOT, and I’m incredibly interested in seeing where on earth this goes next because that ending…that ending was just so unexpected. Sarah has really opened my eyes to the possibilities in adult fantasy and I think I’m a little more open to trying again!

The Queen Of Blood by Sarah Beth Durst is an ebook I checked out on Overdrive through Delta High School's access. The story opens with a mythical quality and the setting of the village in the trees is described beautifully. The first chapter is in Daleina's Point of view and alternates with Champion Ven. A few chapters are in Queen Fara's point of view. The Queen is a complex and complicated character. She's continuously having replacements trained to become Queen. There's an academy where training takes place to turn girls into heirs for the Queen. She's tired of hearing about being replaced and she seems to have an underlying cunning and possible ruthlessness. Daleina travels and trains with Ven and the healer Hamon and they take great care of her and help her when she loses her eyesight. The three companions visit the village that Daleina was born in and where her family still resides. She's saddened by how much time has changed her home. As a challenge, Queen Fara wants Daleina to reclaim a lost village and the village happens to be her hometown. She's supposed to claim the village from the spirits, then rebuild it and make it safe. Her companions think the Queen is cruel to ask this of Daleina. As often as she works well with her companions and other candidates and proves to others that she's capable, Daleina never gets over her self-doubt and insecurities. Ven and Hamon have always been confident in Daleina though. The world is interesting and unique because the people completely rely on spirits for everything from warmth, growing vegetation, cooking and all things that come from air, earth, water, trees and fire. The spirits have a natural tendency and desire to destroy all that is human- people and their creations. The story picked up the pace towards the ending and I'm looking forward to reading the sequel, The Reluctant Queen. 4 stars for this new vision of a fantasy world.

I really enjoyed this book. It was a fun read with some great characters. I can't wait for book 2 in this fantasy series.

Wow, this was a beautifully written book. Such great imagery and world building! The characters where pretty good too. The only reason I'm giving this 4 stars is because I was not a fan of how the "romance" played out. Deleina's love interest just kinda came out of no where. And there was so much "flash forwarding" that was missed how and when their relationship grew and became more. I dont know. I get that it's not a romancey novel, but I wish there was more for that. It just felt out of the blue that all of a sudden he says "I love you" and I was like "wait, what?" That's my only downside to this novel. Otherwise, great plot, characters and world building.

I like that this book doesn’t waste time with exposition, but at the the same time, I feel like it needs to. Primarily when it comes to the environments and the spirits. Beyond what element they are, there’s not a whole lot else describing them. This, combined with not having a lay of the land, made it a little difficult to wrap my head around what exactly was happening in certain scenes.

Eventually, I decided I was going to picture the spirits as some kind of humanoid flying fairy formed by their respective element (I know that’s probably completely wrong, but there wasn’t a whole lot to go off off). But then that image completely fell apart when one of the spirits gets cut and starts to bleed... like, blood. Now I don’t want to criticize the authors world building (especially since I didn’t fully understand it), but an elemental spirit bleeding normal blood seemed a little weird to me.

Noia, noia e ancora noia! Non penso di aver mai letto un libro più noioso di questo. La trama era promettente, e fosse stata sviluppata meglio, con uno stile di scrittura diverso e meno da enciclopedia ricercata, probabilmente lo avrei apprezzato di più.
