Some wounds heal. Others leave scars.
Four years ago, Charlene Perigard survived a brutal kidnapping. Now she’s put that trauma behind her for a promising future with handsome firefighter Ben Jorgensen. But when new danger strikes, a new nightmare begins.

Sinister threats, a midnight attack, and a deathbed promise drive Charlene to the little town of Creekside, where she encounters a man from her past whom she has long struggled to forget: Clay Morrow—ex-convict and brother of her kidnapper. He's also the man who once helped save her life.

Despite the odds, Charlene and Clay forge a tentative friendship, unaware of a brooding, mounting danger that seeks to destroy them both. Charlene’s wounded heart must choose between her fiancé and the man whose past is more scarred than her own. But in choosing, she may just lose everything.

Born in Australia but raised in the USA as a homeschooled student, Therese has been writing stories since before she could spell. At 18, she completed the first draft of her first published novel. Her books have reached #1 bestseller in various Kindle categories, and she's now the award-winning author of six Christian romance/suspense novels as well as a non-award-winning mother of five energetic kids.

As a busy stay-at-home mom, Therese writes whenever she can manage (and sometimes when she can't). She dreams up new stories mostly at night when the house is—if she's lucky—finally quiet. It's no coincidence one of her novels is called Sleep Deprived.

Her novel After the Thaw is a 2019 TopShelf Magazine first-place winner in Inspirational Fiction, and her novel The Butterfly Recluse is a 2021 Kindle Book Awards semi-finalist in Romance and a 2021 Readers' Favorite bronze medal winner in Contemporary Christian Romance. Therese is a member of American Christian Fiction Writers and looks forward to writing many more books—so long as her kids let her have a coherent thought now and then.

I love the depth of this story, the development of the characters was so involved. There were a couple of incidents where "after the thaw" would fit. Charlene was targeted because of her ultra rich grandfather by an ex convict who had had a rough upbringing. Unbelievable things kept happening to her until a video showed she was the victim. Clay's mother died but her letter to him revealed the man who he thought was his father really wasn't.

Sequels too often don't measure up to the first book of a series. This one is definitely an exception. The best way I can describe the novel is a mixed-genre story of suspense, mystery, romance, and Christianity. It excels in that it is able to capture the best of all of them.

Therese Heckenkamp hooks the reader from the very beginning, when Charlene Perigard's fiancé suffers a tragic accident and is in a coma. From there, the tension keeps growing throughout the entire novel. A second love-interest is introduced when Clay Morrow, the man who rescued her in "Frozen Footprints," is released from prison. The romantic aspect is heightened by the realistic portrayal of the men's point of view: both from the two love interests as well as from the villain--an ex-con with an axe to grind.

The violence depicted is sometimes jarring but very effective in setting up the clash between good and evil. The morality in the novel runs deep in the very fiber of the story. It's never "in-your-face" preachy but rather a natural outgrowth of the internal and external struggles of the characters.
There is just enough information from the previous novel to bring the reader up-to-date without slowing down the narrative. "After The Thaw" reads almost as well as a stand-alone as it does a sequel. There are plenty of twists that I didn't see coming. This is the mark of true suspense.

I highly recommend "After the Thaw" but you might want to consider reading "Frozen Footprints" first to get the full flavor of both novels..

This book was an amazing experience. Great completion to Frozen Footprints. It was suspenseful and had several unexpected turns. I also enjoyed the heartfelt issues that Charlene and Clay had to face, and how their faith helped them through their difficult times.

A good conclusion to Frozen Footprints, After the Thaw tied up loose ends satisfactorily. The main characters grew on me, even Sam and Brook. And it wasn't hard to dislike the bad guys, but I was surprised at the sadness I felt at their wasting of their lives, especially Lance.
I really enjoyed the suspense in this, and especially that it's a clean read!
