Redway Acres: Helena Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 84 ratings

What is an independent woman to do in a world where marrying means losing everything?

Pregnant, widowed and rejected by her family, Helena moves to Redway Acres, where she raises her daughter and trains horses.

She befriends an old widower in a ramshackle cottage, the family from the grand estate of Eastease, and their friend Colonel Nathaniel Ackley, second son of the Earl of Aysthill.

As Redway Acres becomes the focus of her ambition, Helena finds herself thrust into a man’s world where her opinions count for little. She loves working with horses and raising her daughter and will stand up for those in need, but the law doesn’t allow for love.

Will Helena give up everything, including herself, should she find a man worthy enough?

Her story is about hardship, horses, strength of will, love and loyalty.

Trish Butler is the author of the Historical Fiction saga, Redway Acres which is set in the east of England. Also, a contemporary detective series based in the fictional New Jersey town of Rockmond.

Born in Norwich, in the county of Norfolk, England, Trish moved to Connecticut in the US, in 1999. Her daughter was born there two years later, and is on the autism spectrum.

Redway Acres, which Trish calls Pride & Prejudice with horses and a healthy dollop of feminism, is set during the early 1800s in Lincolnshire, Cambridgeshire and Norfolk, UK, an area that she knows well. Over the past more than twenty years, Trish has got to know the tri-state area well too, and hopefully enough American English terms that make her contemporary mystery book sound authentic.

Trish always wanted to write a book and at age fifty, finally realized that dream. There are now six main books and one companion in the Redway series, and so far, one book has been published of her Rockmond Mysteries.

Read her blog about her process, The Road to Redway; the Redway Acres saga; Rockmond Mysteries; excerpts, poetry and her characters, on her website.

Enjoyed all the characters and setting
I read Redway Acres: Book 1 - Helena this summer while vacationing in Germany and North Carolina. While I initially had trouble keeping up with the many characters introduced at the beginning of the book, I quickly got immersed in the story and did not want to put the book down. I especially loved the main character Helena of course, with her strong personality, sense of self, and independent ideas during a time when women were mostly expected to obey their husbands. I am looking forward to finding out what lies ahead for the other female characters introduced in Book 1.

I was lucky to receive Book #3, 4, & 5 through a contest from the author, Trish Butler. I immediately purchased books 1 & 2 and found myself escaping to another time and place away from all of today’s drama. Not that there wasn’t drama in early 1800’s, England. This series is full of it!! It is also full of horses, strong-willed women, romance, sex, celebrations and heartache. It’s more than just a single family saga. It’s a spider web of lives woven together by time and place, need and circumstance, tradition and rebellion, love and loyalty....

Book #1 revolves around Helena. The author creates a main character born into a time where women were considered subservient to men, who, at a young age, finds herself victim to the worst of male dominance. But instead of staying a victim, she becomes stronger and goes on to carve herself a life that is not dependent purely on the will of any man. I love how the author uses Helena to address the plight of women in a timeless way and shows the power and strength women are capable of to take control of their own lives. Not that there are not powerful men in this saga! We are introduced to the best and the worst examples of men.

I love the historical aspect of this series as well as the peak into the pomp and circumstance of the time. The author’s descriptions show an immense amount of research of this era and setting. I am so anxious to continue on to book #2 and beyond!!

What’s an independent woman to do in a world where marrying means losing everything?
This is a story about love and courage in the face of adversity. Helena is an extraordinary woman who overcomes the problems forced upon her by an English society in the 1800s which seeks to bind her by its own rules of propriety.
Fans of Jane Austen will fall in love with the Colonel who sees Helena as something to behold, not to spurn, although his own stubbornness is nearly his downfall. Set against the backdrop of a stud farm, with glimpses into war against Napoleon, this is lovely read.

I enjoyed reading this well thought out novel. I like the way the author uses her warmth, honesty and talent for detail, to capture the true essence of the characters and relationships that develop. The use of historical facts, and description of the heart and soul of the characters help you understand and question the demands placed on society in the 19th century as well as serve as a comparison of today's.

I picked this up becausexthe horse farm setting was appealing. However, the characters were familiar and the horse referebces didn't reveal much depth of knowledge.

Redway Acres: Helena is the first book of Trish’s historical romance series. It’s getting a solid four stars from me. In book one, you meet Helena who runs her own horse stable – something that is considered unladylike and unheard of during this time. She’s faced some tough stuff in her life and is raising a child on her own. As you can imagine, she is fierce – she is deliberate and confident in voicing her opinion despite the time period’s expectation that women be more demure. One thing she doesn’t have though is a man to share her life with. Throughout the book, we meet her neighbors and friends and watch as a romance blossoms… or falls apart.

There are a LOT of things I could tell you about this book that I loved. It’s a smooth, heart-warming (and sometimes -breaking) story that I became totally engrossed in. But the biggest thing I appreciated is the author’s handling of situations that arise in the book. I will briefly mention that there are some topics (about sexual situations and treatment of women) that could be triggering for some people. However, the characters handle the situations and topics well in that she are clear in saying this is something that is wrong and unacceptable. They clearly state what is wrong about it and how it should be handled. Those who are in the wrong are receptive and repentant for the most part. Given how society is today, I found this to be incredibly important and empowering.

If you’re looking for a book with some romance, a touch of history, horses, and a strong female lead, this is the series!

A huge thank you to Trish Butler for providing me with the first two books of the Redway Acres series. I have voluntarily read this book and the review expresses my own personal opinion.

Redway Acres is a triumphant first novel by this new author. The story draws you in with the details of characters' thoughts and emotions. The descriptions of English landscapes create mental pictures painted beautifully. Helena is a woman ahead of her time in her awareness of the limitations placed upon her by virtue of her sex, and the consequences of available choices. This is a poignant message given today's societal issues as well.
I'm so looking forward to book 2!

I enjoyed this book. I'm not normally a huge fan of romance stories, but there was a lot more going on here. The characters were interesting and the setting especially vivid. I don't want to say more because I don't want to spoil it, but you will come to care for Helena and all of her friends. I will also add that I think if you enjoy the Poldark novels, you will like this story.

4.0 out of 5 stars it reads like a Jane Austen novel
Reviewed in Australia on February 12, 2018
Set in the 19th century, Redway Acres Book 1 by Trisha Butler is a well written historical fiction.

The year is 1813. England is at war with France, Nepolean Bonaparte. Colonel Nathaniel Ackley is at the battlefield near the French and the Spanish border. Laden with grief, he mopes for England, thinking about it and missing it.

What's interesting about this book, more than the intrigues and the story itself is the narrative style. The juxtaposition of the two worlds, the change of scenes going back and forth between this peaceful life of England and that turbulent realities of the war, puts the book in perspective. On the one hand, there are these soldiers inflicted with gangrene, death in the midst of a full on battle filled with gun power, on the other hand a peaceful life in England ensues.

In parts, it reads like a Jane Austen novel. With the war in the backdrop, life continues as usual in England where characters free from the war-plagues, mingle in mundane socialising of horse ridings, walks and so on between scones and tea, as the drama slowly unfolds.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lovely 19th Century drama to fall right into!

This was an easy and immersive read, and pulled me in straight away. I myself am a rural-born English girl, so I absolutely adored the rural Lincolnshire setting, and it’s not as long as most books so it is definitely a lovely easy read for most people.

Very Bronte-esque in style and setting, which definitely floated my boat. The beautifully crafted storyline, and the array of believable characters makes this a real page-turner with an even spread of drama, romance, and sadness (a particular scene really gripped my heart!).

The author’s writing is beautifully descriptive, and the dialogue is believably 19th Century. You can definitely tell that the author knows her stuff about everything from farming and horses, to the military matters of the time.

Without giving anything away about the story, I will say that if you love the works by the Brontes, or Catherine Cookson, then definitely give Redway Acres a read.

Reading Helena made me laugh and cry (I shed quite a few tears!!) as I what guided through their journey, I have just downloaded book 2 and can't wait to start reading.

I could not put the book down and any spare moment I had, I was reading. I would thoroughly recommend it.
