A taut psychological thriller in the vein of The Good Girl by Mary Kubica.

Clare is on the run.

From her past, from her husband, and from her own secrets. When she turns up alone in the remote mining town of Blackmore asking about Shayna Fowles, the local girl who disappeared, everyone wants to know who Clare really is and what she’s hiding. As it turns out, she’s hiding a lot, including what ties her to Shayna in the first place. But everyone in this place is hiding something—from Jared, Shayna’s secretive ex-husband, to Charlie, the charming small-town drug pusher, to Derek, Shayna’s overly involved family doctor, to Louise and Wilfred, her distraught parents.

Did Shayna flee? Was she killed? Is it possible she’s still alive?

As Clare uncovers the mysteries around Shayna’s disappearance, she must confront her own demons, moving us deeper and deeper into the labyrinth of lies and making us question what it is she’s really running from. Twisting and electrifying, this is a get-under-your-skin thriller that will make you question what it means to lose yourself and find yourself in the most unlikely places.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

In Canadian author Stuart’s dark and deliciously disturbing debut, enigmatic Malcolm Boon hires Clare O’Dey, who has run away from her husband, to come to the remote mining town of Blackmore (in what could be either Canada or the U.S.) and search for Shayna Fowles, who disappeared three weeks earlier. Clare and Shayna have much in common. Both women were drug users and trapped in loveless, violent marriages; they even resemble each other, and their husbands are likewise similar. Vanishing and using another name was easy for Clare, who wonders if Shayna did the same. Moving into a ramshackle trailer next to Shayna’s parents’ home, Clare becomes involved with local drug dealer Charlie Merritt, single mom Sara Gorman, and Shayna’s ex-husband. Secrets abound in this mountain town, which has been dying since a tragedy shuttered the local mine. Clare doesn’t know whom to trust, including Boon, who’s working on behalf of an unknown client. Stuart’s perceptive look at addiction, abuse, and obsession will resonate with fans of psychological thrillers. Agent: Chris Bucci, McDermid Agency (Canada). (July)\n

Review

"Stuart is a sensitive writer who has given Clare a painful past and just enough backbone to bear it." (New York Times)

"[A] dark and deliciously disturbing debut . . . Stuart’s perceptive look at addiction, abuse, and obsession will resonate with fans of psychological thrillers." (Publishers Weekly)

"A haunting psychological thriller that builds to a tumultuous climax. It is impossible to put down, or to look away." (Robert Dugoni, New York Times bestselling author of My Sister's Grave )

Still Mine delivers all the nail-biting moments of a fast-paced thriller and filters them through the eyes of girl-with-a-past Clare O’Dey: deeply flawed yet instantly recognizable, O’Dey is a noir detective hero for a postmodern age. Author Amy Stuart sends one missing woman out to look for another one, and the result is chilling. You’ll find yourself turning the pages faster and faster.” (Elisabeth de Mariaffi, author of The Devil You Know )

“A haunting treasure of a book that burrowed its way into my psyche as I read it.… Not since
The Silent Wife have I been rendered so powerlessly riveted by a psychological thriller. I can’t wait to read what Stuart writes next.” (Marissa Stapley, author of Mating for Life )

“The cliffhanger will have you continuing to bite your nails until there’s a sequel.” (RT Book Reviews)

“Twisty and swift, Amy Stuart’s
Still Mine is a darkly entertaining mystery machine. But what will really surprise you is the emotional foundation on which it has been built.” (Andrew Pyper, bestselling author of The Demonologist and The Damned )

“An intricately woven thriller.... You’ll want desperately to solve the mystery not only of the missing Shayna, but of Clare O’Dey, Amy Stuart’s heartbreaking heroine, on the run from the darkest forces both within and without—and you’ll have a hard time forgetting the everytown of Blackstone and its scheming, desperate inhabitants.... A vivid and haunting debut.” (Holly LeCraw, author of The Swimming Pool )

A gripping page-turner, with a plot that takes hold of you and drags you through the story at breakneck speed. The characters are compelling, the setting chilling and the suspense ever-present. Add to that, Stuart has an ability to tap into the dark psychology behind addiction and abuse, and to bring these complex struggles to life in a way that stays with you for days.” (Toronto Star)

“From its evocative opening to its heart-pounding conclusion,
Still Mine is a gripping mystery that I felt desperate to solve. Amy Stuart paints a vivid picture of the stark mountain town, Blackmore, and the cast of shadowy characters who inhabit it. A tense and absorbing read.” (Lucy Clarke, author of The Blue )

“An impressive debut, rooted in character rather than trope, in fundamental understanding rather than rote puzzle-solving.” (The Globe and Mail)

"Stuart has created a likeable heroine, complete with some pretty serious flaws. Between Clare and the other characters of Blackmore, the story is both haunting and compelling." (Vancouver Sun)

"The rabbit hole goes deep in this one, and it's easy to lose hours on it." (WomansDay.com)

This was hard to put down and I’ve struggled finding time to read lately. Once I read the first one, I had to have all 3.

Yet I was offended by the ending. The story flowed really well. I kept reading to find out what happened. Was the author in a hurry to finish? A set up for the next book? Could have been 5 star if not for the disappointment for the cut off end

This wasn't my favorite thriller I have ever read but I really enjoyed how different it is than the normal books I read. I just don't think this book held my attention all the way through enough to be a complete favorite.

It follows her back story a bit through the book and I wish that connected a bit more during the book. I thought Malcolm was a very interesting character and I hope if there is a part 2 of this book that he is more involved.

She is basically an undercover agent in a small town with no investigating experience and it follows her story in that town.

I loved the twists and turns this book took me on. Being an avid reader I was sure I had this mystery figured out early on in the book but found myself very surprised at the outcome.
What is up with Malcolm? I guess we have to wait for Stuart's next book, she did leave us with several unanswered questions so I am sure one is in the works!!
What a fantastic movie Still Mine would be I could visualize the town of Blackmore and the character's I got a little ahead of myself and picked out the location and the actors!!!

Not really my type of story, but it grabbed my attention. Character descriptions are so awesome that I could envision every one of them. Would make a great t.v. movie.

A down-on-her-luck woman comes to a mining town devastated by the closure of its mines. The citizens, those who haven't left, are depressed and angry and turning to drugs. As more layers of the heroine's sad past are uncovered, we find someone has sent her to look into the disappearance of a woman. A woman with eerie similarities to the heroine.

A brooding story with unexpected layers.

Unappealing characters, depressing setting and drug culture. I tried hard. Couldn't hang with it. I usually finish any book I begin, but not this one. And I love a good mystery. I was curious, but not enough to go past the mid point. Sorry

4.0 out of 5 stars Great thriller
Reviewed in Canada on June 6, 2018
This is a great thriller.

I found the beginning of this story a little slow. There was a lot happening, but I didn’t feel invested in the character of Clare. I wanted to know more about her and how she ended up investigating Shayna’s life. There was plenty of information about Shayna and the town, but not enough about Clare to make me feel connected to her.

There were twists throughout the story. Clare was a unreliable character, so she was usually unpredictable. She made bad decisions, though sometimes she just had to make the best of the situation she was in.

I really had no idea what happened to Shayna. Everyone in town had a motive to hurt her, including the possibility that she harmed herself or left. But I figured she didn’t just walk away because that wouldn’t make for a very interesting ending.

I really enjoyed this story. I can’t wait to read the sequel Still Water.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thrilling debut novel

A great first novel that grips from the first page and draws you in. Until almost the end I couldn't decide which characters were trustworthy or not and so it became the classic page turner. And it was also at the end when the double meaning of the title became apparent. I certainly look forward to a sequel and many more books from this talented writer.

Disappointing. I didn’t realize it wasn’t a new copy. And it was the bigger size paperback and not the smaller kind. Hard to rate because of these things and personal choice. Not pleased thought that it was a used copy.
