Absorb Nature
Ever since I witnessed the beauty of the Grand Canyon, I was awestruck not only with its magnificent but it was a moment that allowed me to discover something enriching about absorbing Nature.Honestly, I found religion with Nature, that day on the north rim looking into the canyon below and across the surrounding landscape of beauty that somehow healed all of whatever stressors were in my life.Florence Williams novels, "The Nature Fix," and "The Three Day Effect," are essential reading for all humans who are stressed out, mentally and physically. She identifies specific studies in Japan, and Korea, along with American researchers discovering and describing the effects of absorbing nature.Florence Williams herself participated with others on various backpacking and hiking outings to reveals why it is essential for the body to absorb nature, no matter what your background or history of trauma, or, your social, economic environment.More importantly, it is a simplistic and easy way for humans to heal, by merely taking a walk in the woods for three days if not three days straight return visit, in my opinion, several times weekly. As an aspiring, unpublished author, the novel has strengthened my belief that I will continue my outdoor travels around the world focusing on the absorption of nature because creativity flows easier and more precise for the mind while healing the soul.

I grew up embracing technology, but luckily had numerous experiences in nature that I took for granted. Decades later, I found myself volunteering as a docent at a nearby park, and found myself drawn there far more than I ever expected - because being in the park made me feel better. Florence Williams has done a great job of documenting studies, programs and her personal experiences of collecting this information, in a very readable collection of stories instead of a firehose of facts and theories.

I think this book hit the spot with overall information about this topic! Even if I gave it four stars...it just feels like something amiss. The author gave a trove of information from all directions. That’s amazing because not many authors do that nowadays. It is nice to see there were various fields to discuss - smell, vision, health, consciousness, education, psychological diagnosis, and more. It hit me when I had extreme fatigue lately and I read this book. I told myself that it was a while since I went on a short hike for a day. When I did, then I felt better for a week...it is telling.

This book presents a lot of empirical as well as anecdotal evidence that time in nature improves our health and well-being. Very well written to be fun, funny and profound. I learned about all the many scientists and organizations discovering how beneficial nature exposure is to humans. Follow the advice in this book!

The author did a great technical study on why nature matters. I’d hoped for a more esoteric explanation rather than statistics.

I was so excited to read this book and was really enjoying it in the beginning. But I guess once my excitement wore off, or something, the book started to drag. I want to keep reading it because I was truly enjoying her insight on nature, the human condition, and how to survive modern day. This book really makes you appreciate the outdoors and gives a new perspective on how to relax and unwind from daily life. I took the book with me on a hike through a nature preserve and couldn't stop thinking about how there is not one place left on earth where you can't hear man-made noises. I stopped in the dense forest and felt as though I was surely away from all man-made machines, and yet, a plane flew overhead. It's pretty incredible.
Even if I've lost my momentum, I still recommend this book to anyone who is interested!

Great insight into the science behind what we’re already been feeling as a society. The creeping disconnect from nature and being outside is easy to remedy. The free and easy health benefits of being in nature are a no brainier.

4.0 out of 5 stars The nature fix
Reviewed in Germany on March 25, 2023
Takeaways from reading the book:
- Page 4: Beethoven hugged trees and dedicated symphonies to landscapes.
- Page 6: Spending time in nature helps us become more empathetic, more focused and more grounded.
- Page 22: Throughout our evolution, we have spent 99.9% of our time in nature.
- Page 22: Naturalistic environments are some of the only places, where we engage all 5 senses and thus, by definition, are fully, physically alive.
- Page 139: Just 15 minutes in a city park - even one with pavement, crowds and some street noise - is enough to improve mood, vitality and feelings of restoration.
- Page 229: Friedrich Fröbel from Germany invented the word Kindergarten, as he was walking in a forest and got the idea that children would benefit from absorbing nature with their senses - and thereby also learn about, for example, geometry, physics and design. Curiosity and self activity would guide childrens' learning. After his death, women managed to spread the idea to other nations in very successful ways.

Canadians and Americans seem to be behind many other countries when it comes to recognizing and appreciating the restorative effect that exposure to nature has on our physical and mental health. The author offers compelling evidence of how spending time in nature can make us healthier, happier, less stressed and better able to face the challenges of everyday life. Children who grow up with a generous 'dose' of nature become more balanced and more productive adults.

I bought this e-book for my thesis (planning to open a activity in Belgium to help people realize that they need to change their job... but I found so much more!) ... and I am so grateful for it. I’m buying it a second time, to have it physically, and make it read by my loved ones and colleagues. Thank you so much. I hope meeting Florence some day!
