Lord Miles himself is clearly hiding a secret. He is brash and inhospitable and does not take kindly to visitors—even one as smart and attractive as Miss Pickett. He is unsettled by the mysterious deaths of his new wife, Clara, and his sister, Marie. Could Miles himself be to blame for the deaths?

Working together, Miles and Lucy attempt to restore peace to Blackwell Manor. But can Lucy solve the mystery of Miles? Can she love the man—beast and all?

Editorial Reviews

Review

''Delivers a unique take on a classic fairy tale...in a steampunk version of Victorian England. Wonderful novel filled with romance, action and adventure. The story boasts a strong hero and heroine, a darkly atmospheric setting, intriguing steampunk details and the mystery of a few spooky ghosts, vampires and werewolves. Readers will eagerly await the next novel in what promises to be an excellent series.'' --BookPage

''In addition to being the perfect genre, the cover is stunning...There is plenty of commonality between this story and the original to be recognizable, and yet Allen transformed it into her own stunning piece...Steampunk novels can be so fun as the reader sees what modern gadgets and technologies authors choose to include in their stories; the things Allen incorporated really added to the intrigue and excitement of the book. There is mystery, action, and suspense that will have the reader on the edge of their seat. Truly not enough can be said about this novel to describe how fantastic it is.'' I am a fan of Nancy Campbell Allen. So I ordered a copy of this book and then it sat on my dresser as I had so many other books to read. I would look at it and think I really need to read this. Then time would go by without me having done so, just continuing to stare longingly at it. Well enough was enough! I told myself it was past time. Also, I had just been given a copy of the next book, Kiss of the Spindle, from Netgalley and discovered that one of the characters from this book was the male MC in the next book. Of course this was just the motivation I needed to dive in and let the other books have their turn sitting waiting for me.

Let me just say this was not at all what I was thinking it was. Ok, yes there is the blurb that you can read and see what it is about. But I read it a year ago when I got the book and I just told myself it's Beauty and the Beast, steampunk style. Well, I was a little scattered brained after prepping to be out of town for over a month and forgot that steampunk can include werewolves and zombies and vampires. So I was quickly reminded about the fact when the female mc (main character) starts talking about her work in searching for information about the anti-vampiric aide.

I will say it took me a while to read this book. Not for the reason you may be thinking...I was absolutely exhausted. Prepping for your life to be away from home for so long and running and doing everything at home that normally happens completely wore me out. So after only reading a paragraph a day, I said that's enough, I'm reading it all! And I did! And I loved it! Can I just say that this author can write a great story with plenty of mystery and build plenty of sweet and clean romance between the characters. These two MCs were very strong willed but don't let that stop you from looking beyond the surface. The dancing in the ballroom scene was awesome! There might be some moments of suspense that are a little intense. Especially if you're reading it late at night, in the woods, with sounds creaking all around you, pitch dark and reading about mists and vampires, zombies and werewolves. Yeah, it was great! Ha ha ha ha!

Seriously though, I really enjoyed it. I did NOT expect what happened, nor who the bad guy was. Kudos to the author for fooling me, usually I'm spot on for who, why, where, what, etc. Grab this one if you're a steampunk and fairy tale fan. Or grab it if you've never entered the world of steampunk. Oh and by the way, I've read the next book too and it was just as fun!

Content: Zombies, werewolves, vampires and suspense. Some very mild gore and mild romance. But clean. I would let my older teenage daughters read this one (in fact one is about to right now).

Happy Reading!!!

BEAUTY AND THE CLOCKWORK BEAST was such an entertaining mix of intrigue, danger, complex family relationships, and romance all set in a alternate historical England world. The complex characters and a plot that played off a Beauty and the Beast theme written in its own way made for a rather interesting tale. Those who enjoy Steampunk are sure to love this from beginning to end!

I simply adored the heroine, Lucy. She was intelligent, witty, charming, and loyal. I loved her heart and determination. Then there was Miles. He is your usual brooding gentleman, but not quite as he hides his own secret. He is a foreboding force, but also has a very strong sense of loyalty and a sharp mind. I loved him with all his faults and walls to protect his heart. My favorite parts of the story were with the two of them, especially when the occasions they meet are spontaneous. I also really liked the other characters and am hoping to see future books that will focus on them.

The plot was very evenly paced with a few spots of climax that steadily grew to the very dramatic end. There were a few places towards the end that I thought could have been worked out slightly better in a different way, but that would be the only thing that was slightly off for me. Everything was balanced well between the witty banter and dialogue, the array of emotions, a humorous touch here and there along with some definite sarcasm, the ongoing mystery of the recent deaths, and the blooming romance. There is a dancing scene that literally made me swoon and is one of the most romantic moments I've ever read. Makes me sigh just thinking about it.

In the end, was it what I wished for? Yes. If you like your books straightly historical with no paranormal or steampunk aspects, then this definitely won't be for you. However, if you're like me and enjoy these types of stories, you will thoroughly enjoy this one. I'm happily awaiting the next installment!

Content: Some violence, but clean.

Okay, my first thought is, WHOA! Okay, so we got a mix of old fashion 1800s mixed with vampires, and werewolves, and, new age mechanisms. I knew it was something called "steampunk" but I didn't realize really what steampunk was till I read this. Needless to say, it's my very first steampunk story. So, I was quite caught off guard. It was interesting. Interesting enough I read it in two and a half days. It held my attention from the first paragraph, After unconfusing myself, I was hooked. Would I read it again? Mmmm, maybe.

This book (and in fact this entire series) is SO good! I think this one is my favorite of the 4 books, but they are all really good. The blend of steampunk, victorian era, and fairytales is so incredibly creative and well done! I love it, highly recommend!

I do not know what possessed me to purchase this book. I seem to be a sucker for reimagined fairytales, but a steampunk romance...having no idea what that even was it surprised me how hooked I became right from the first chapter. It wasn't as 'steamy' as some of the books I've read with a "Beauty and the Beast" plot line, but it was the most engaging so far. Clever writing, well developed characters, and carefully constructed plot twist made it a fast but enjoyable read. I could not put it down. I bought the second in the series and hope it can carry the torch.

5.0 out of 5 stars An old theme and yet a new and compelling way of telling the tale

I admit: I'm a sucker for “Beauty and the Beast” and all derived variations and re-tellings. But since Grace Draven's “Entreat Me” and Rosamund Hodge's “Cruel Beauty”, I'm a bit apprehensive whenever I stumble upon a new re-telling, because they just raised the bar on the subject and not many hop over it. So imagine my joy, when I realized that “Beauty and the Clockwork Beast” is not a totally unique and new take on the story, but it is new enough to avoid the “been there, done that, bought the t-shirt”-feeling. And the most important parts here for me, are the two main characters, “Bluestocking” and botanist Lucy Pickett, and Earl Blackwell. She is a very intelligent, educated, witty and unarguably strong-willed scientist, who claims to be able to “fix whatever is broken”. She works for the “Botanical Society” to find a means to prevent vampires from hiding between unsuspecting humans [yes, there are vampires and “predatory shifters”] and he is an Earl troubled the tragedies life threw at him and acting his rather brash self. I need not mention that Lucy and the Earl's discussions are hilarious – even more so, because they're shown from both their POVs.

But to make this a well-rounded and entertaining story, there is also a steampunk victorian England around them and a murder-mystery that is actually very well devised. I had an early idea about the culprit, but was then turned around a lot and in the end, I was wrong. Therefore: very well done. A cool variation of the theme with amazing characters and a gripping mystery.

2.0 out of 5 stars An “okay” read.

A decent enough read but nothing spectacular here. I found the steam punk elements to be contrived and not particularly well developed, more or less serving as a plot device rather than an integral part of the world. The characters weren’t particularly memorable and as a reader I didn’t become particularly attached to any of them. Still, the story was entertaining enough to fill a cold, snowy day.
