The Mapmaker's Apprentice (Glass and Steele Book 2) Kindle Edition
When an apprentice from the Mapmakers' Guild goes missing, Matt and India are employed to find him. Going undercover as a married couple, they discover that not everyone at the guild is what they seem, and the lad's unearthly maps caused jealousy, suspicion and fear.
With one of the apprentice's magic maps in their possession, India and Matt must use their wits and India's fledgling, untried magic to find him. But the more they investigate, the more sinister plots they uncover, including a link between the Mapmakers' and Watchmakers' Guilds, and an ancient magical treasure buried beneath the streets of London.
As the net of suspicion widens and enemies draw closer, it's not just the apprentice's life that's in danger, but Matt's too. Someone will go to great lengths to prevent him discovering the name of the man who can fix the watch keeping him alive. Great lengths indeed.

This prompted me to call Amazon to find out how this could have happened. They were just as astonished as I that a book downloaded to my kindle without paying for it, but the issue with the payment was with my bank. I contacted the bank and found out there was a major security breach with their system, so they deactivated everyone's cards and issued new ones.
I resolved the problem, and here I am purchasing the book again even though I've already read it. In fact, just in case my bank decided to do something else without telling me, I downloaded the rest of the series. How the book arrived on my kindle is a mystery, although I've encountered bizarre things like this with electronics my entire life. I've never been able to wear a watch either. Just don't keep time if they're on my wrist.
I'm hoping the few nitpicky things I have with the characters and some of the plot points that don't seem to resolve themselves are all dealt with through the series. Otherwise, I love the world building, the Victorian England setting, and how magic is used with the story.
5 stars--WOW
4 stars--would read again
3 stars--was good, won't read again
2 stars--read it, but didn't enjoy it
1 star--didn't finish, it was so awful
Do I need to read books before this one: yes
Cliffhanger: watch isn't fixed
SUMMARY
The group learns Thursday that Mirth picks up his money every Wednesday. That same day, Commissioner Munro employs Matt and India to find his missing illegitimate son, Daniel. He gives them a picture and a map. He was last seen leaving his apprenticeship with the master mapmaker. India feels magic in the exquisite map of London.
They agree to take the case to keep in Munro's good graces, especially as Sheriff Payne has arrived and will likely make trouble. They also continue looking for Dupont, the watchmaker from the factory who might be Chronos.
EVALUATION
Treasure maps are fun! I like how the author takes an ordinary yet niche job (first watchmaking, now mapmaking), adds a little magic, and writes a story around it.
I'd like to see more character development. India doesn't seem to be mourning her father much. I don't know Matt very well. Wilkie, Duke, Cyclops, and Letitia are convenient stock characters. Where are the deep discussions? The life sharing? Jokes between friends?
I'd also like to see more setting. Because of high school history, I have an idea what England was like at 1790; I really have no idea what it was like at 1890. The only difference I've seen so far is some gas lights at businesses.
RECOMMENDATION
All those who enjoyed Book 1
FAVORITE QUOTES
It was nice to be liked for being myself and not have to hide my forthrightness under a polite façade all the time.
I knew he was right, but I wasn't going to tell him so. He might use it against me later when I changed my mind.
