Forward-Facing Trauma Therapy: Healing the Moral Wound Kindle Edition

4.7 4.7 out of 5 stars 168 ratings

In this groundbreaking book, trauma expert J. Eric Gentry builds upon the pioneering insights of such luminaries as neuroscientist Stephen Porges, Judith Herman and Bessel van der Kolk to introduce Forward-Facing Trauma Therapy (FFTT), the next evolutionary leap in the treatment of traumatic stress. Unlike many traditional psychotherapies, FFTT eschews the assumption that psychological problems are caused by our faulty perceptions and skewed thought processes. Instead, FFTT addresses trauma and its destructive symptomology at its source our overcharged autonomic nervous systems and hypervigilant threat response resulting from our adaptation to painful past experiences. Dr. Gentry provides a step-by-step guide for implementing a three-pronged methodology and explains how and why the techniques work so effectively. He also demonstrates how anyone experiencing stress can apply FFTT to achieve immediate change and an enduring sense of joy, self-worth, and personal integrity.

Dr. Gentry’s book is very well written. It is user friendly and full of hope. The language is simple and easy to understand for anyone overwhelmed by the trauma in their experience. The exercises are simple but effective. I finished this book after I completed his course available through his website. And they pair beautifully together and are very effective. I was able to apply the principles immediately and saw relief.
I highly recommend this book, the course and any podcasts by Dr. Gentry to anyone navigating their trauma and healing journey. Excellent. Thank you for all these amazing and cost-effective tools. 🙏🏽

Appropriate for general audience as well as professionals. Case examples with summary of the steps of treatment are very useful.

I don't often write reviews, but in this case I chose to write one. I have not finished the book yet, but so far it is very powerful and informative. I have to subtract a star for editing/proofreading. The numerous mistakes in this text distract from the literature. For example, in one paragraph it read "fight, fight, or freeze" twice. Obviously, it should be fight, flight, or freeze. The same mistake twice in one paragraph is excessive. I even found an instance where FFTT was referred to as forward facing forward therapy! Erring on the name of the actual therapy is pretty bad. This text or at least the Kindle edition needs a serious overhaul.

I love this book and read it a lot when faced with scenarios I’m concerned with… easy to follow along and understand

Excellent book for those of us who have experienced and continue to experience the impact of trauma in our lives. Recommended by my psychiatrist who went to the author's workshop on helping patients recover from trauma symptoms. I had my sister read it for me since my mental health challenges affect my ability to focus and concentrate (difficulty with reading). She explained concepts a couple of chapters at a time to me on a weekly basis and provided "homework" that has been incredibly helpful and life changing.

I give Forward-Facing Trauma Therapy an unreserved 5 stars: for speaking truth with clarity; for being scientifically responsible; and for skillfully navigating the core of the matter, based on a deep understanding of trauma, humanity, and hope.

This goes well beyond strategy. I see this sweet text as nothing less than a game-changer in our approach to trauma recovery. For me, it has empowered significant breakthroughs and I expect it to be a lifelong companion.

I just ordered second copy as I gave first away, it was so good I wanted to share. The stories and tools are simple and profound. I especially like how it all comes back to the body- to changing tension patterns in the body and to use the mind proactively creating into the future ...... I have not seen any other books that address growth/healing in this way. Highly recommended.....

Its a great book that is very insightful and provokes thought. I read it after I did Dr Gentry's online course on trauma, and I would definitely recommend doing it if you are interested in trauma. The book repeats the highlights of the course. It has a lot of useful information on threat response and physiological processes behind it. I like the book, but I like his course better.

5.0 out of 5 stars I wish I'd found this decades ago. Full of practical knowledge and advice. Highly recommended.

This is the knowledge I'd been searching for for years. Why do I get stuck? Why do I get distracted? Why do interactions often get awkward? Etc.
If you have any aspects of yourself that seem "stuck", or you have behaviours that you don't seem to be able to control, you should give this a read. There's insights in here that may shed light on things that have never made sense before.
This is very grounded, without a lot of woo-woo nonsense, and yet it's full of heart, and was clearly written with love.
