Extinction End caps off this entire series with relentless action, suspense, intense character driven sequences that churn emotions, and continues its epic and satisfying foundation in science and military details, all the while raising the stakes of survival to the brink of extinction.

From the very first book of this series, I fell in love with the characters. I'm sure, as a post-apocalyptic reader, that may not be the first thing you want to hear. For me, inexplicably, these characters and their quest for survival and victory was paramount to this series' success. Many books in this genre do deliver on some wonderfully developed characters (I'm thinking of The Remaining, Surviving the Dead, The Tide, to name a few), but Nicholas Smith made me fall in love with his characters, more than any series on page or screen has been able to accomplish. His respect and admiration for men and women in uniform is evident throughout each book, and it only adds to the sense of how invested I was, as a reader, to them. As a disabled person myself, I have been especially drawn to the wounded warriors among the characters, the respect given to them, and the sense of utility and value that sometimes disappears in normal life. Here, in the world of Smith's Extinction series, even we matter.

Smith doubles down on strong female characters, which are not always present in this genre. These women hold their own and do incredible things, even get to interact with each other. They're not window dressing, which some books treat them as. In fact, they're willing to give their all to help others. Their courage is impressive.

There are heart warming, joyful moments punctured by loss and grief, and the cathartic sensation of mourning along with the characters we read, and the urgency and requirement of victory. In plain English, I cried big man tears, laughed, and cussed a whole lot at some of the twists and surprises found within.

Evolution continues, the escalation and threat of humanity's survival is at a tipping point. I've loved that about the Extinction Cycle. Somehow, Nicholas Smith made me believe 100% in the terrifying apocalypse and what clicks and clacks in the shadows. He doesn't let up here as the action seems more intense, more descriptive, more engaging, with shocking surprises that do justice to the threat he crafted.

The thrill of Smith's science continues as solutions and understanding of the particulars of Variant evolution is explored. Hope, albeit dimly, continues.

(Potential Spoiler Alert) The villainous Gibson's legacy continues, albeit slightly predictable, while Smith teases us with a president and vice-president who some may wish existed in real life. (Low blow, but I cannot apologize.) Finally, we're given the chance to move on from recent character losses along with the characters we read. It's powerful stuff. Even in death, the characters' impact on those who survive is keenly felt. Perhaps more so on that one Variant at the end than on others, but it still applies. (End potential spoiler alert.)

Does Extinction End suffer from the same genre tropes as other books not in this series? Occasionally, but it's handled with finesse and masterful craft work, making these moments far less problematic than any--and I do mean any--books of the same genre I've read. The extreme threat of ongoing Variant evolution is exptected, and while it may be construed as, "bigger, badder for the end" it doesn't feel that way. Surprisingly enough, this is one apocalypse I'm sold on and it's been taking my money since Extinction Horizon. Fans of this series will be more than pleased, as it's almost a fond letter of appreciation and care for the journey we've accompanied Nicholas Smith on. It's evident where he listened to fans, but where, most of all, he let the story fulfill its own needs and dictate how the characters would respond to the situations placed upon them. In that sense, Extinction End feels like a living, breathing novel, easily ranked as one of the greatest in the genre. Personally for me, "End" has found solid footing as one of my favorite 15 novels of all time and genres, and that is the highest praise I can award it. I hope you will invest in the adventure, and join us readers who have been entranced by these adventures. Stay frosty. Stay alive. All it takes is all you got.

Disclaimer: Even after pre-ordering the novel, I was given an Advance Copy in exchange for an honest review. As an author myself, I am challenged to achieve the same quality in my work as Nicholas Smith has provided in his. Cheers, and happy reading.

This is the final book in the Extinction Cycle series...for now at least. :)

I was really excited to read this book because I won the character contest, to have my name used in the book. I mean, that was absolutely not the only reason I was excited. I was excited because I love Nick's writing, and I love the characters and the story of this series. Now that I think of it, I was mostly just anxious about having a character named after me. What was going to happen to me? I had told Nick that he could obviously do whatever he wanted but also had my blessing to do so, and that if my character were going to die, I'd like for it to be in the most spectacular way possible. Maybe ripped to shreds by a pack of variants, you know? I won't tell you what happens with that; this is a review, not a spoiler. But I was anxious to read for that reason.

Which is why I put the book down for a full day or so, half-way through. Why am I telling you this? Because I was mad at myself for doing so, and I was anxious to get back to it. So I sucked it up and kept reading.

I'm glad I did. This is a fitting conclusion to the series, but it also leaves open the possibility for future additions without doing major reworkings of the usual cast of characters (I'm not gonna tell you if/when/how so-and-so lives/dies/becomes a variant/wait, is that even still possible? I don't think so). Which I loved. Because regardless of any potential future Rico adventures, I loved this series from the bottom of my little heart.

It's well-written. The characters are developed without being over-developed. You know, I don't need their entire life story, just some meat about what makes them...well, them. These are people you root for, sit on the edge of your seat for, and get bummed over losing.

It's fast-paced. I cannot stand books that drag on and on. So yeah, there's a LOT of action in this book. And I'm glad. Because it keeps me reading! But it doesn't go so fast that I have no idea what the hell just happened.

It's a situation you could see yourself in. But only if Donald Trump becomes president.

No, I'm kidding. But it's scientifically plausible. Of course like any good post-apocalyptic story, there requires some suspension of disbelief, but honestly...not that much.

I'm getting tired of writing (I'd rather be reading), so basically, this review boils down to this:

If you haven't read the first four, do. If you have, why are you reading this review? Read the book, already. :)

I had mixed feelings about reading the last book in the this incredible series. Nick Smith brought this series to life through his creative, fast-paced story telling and excellent character development. Each book got better and better, major characters became three dimensional and Mr. Smith built a believable world with characters that became family to me. It's just hard to let go and frankly I found some passages difficult to read, very emotional and was moved to tears a couple of times and had to stop reading for brief periods.

This final book is totally action packed as well as full of twists and turns and no cliche's! All of the loose ends are pulled together beautifully and with some real finesse. The book ends, thankfully, with an epilogue for which I am very appreciative .I rated Extinction End 4.90. I hope the the author will chose to re-visit this world from time to time to let us know how the characters are doing and how things are developing.

This is a great post-apocalyptic series. I encourage you to give it a try and urge you to read the series in order, the story will be richer, starting with Extinction Horizon. This series would be a great TV series and I am hopeful a producer or director from the Syfy channel will option the books. Thank you Nick for an awesome experience via these five books. I am looking forward to the new series (Hell Divers) later this year.

I pre-ordered this book in October 2015, but the author provided me an Advanced Reading Copy (ARC) of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Well I have just finished devouring this five (soon to be six) book series and I'm deeply bummed. I so thoroughly enjoyed each book that I'm going have severe withdrawl until the sixth book is released in a few weeks.
There really isn't much I can say about this book as a separate entity because it really is just the final chapter in a really long and extremely entertaining story.
While it is primarily a science fiction story, the events that start it all are frighteningly possible in the world we have today. I can totally see us doing this to ourselves in some form. For me, that is what makes the story so riveting and terrifying.
The story itself has lots of action. It moves quickly but you never get lost or overwhelmed because you care so deeply for the characters and the deep love and friendship they have for each other. You're carried right along with them as they suffer their defeats and victories. There are times when the tension is so real I found myself reading faster and faster as the action escalated. I had to slow myself down so I didn't miss anything!
I found the ending to the story satisfying, while still leaving a wonderful opening for another (perhaps several??) book.
If you want an entertaining, action packed, thrilling, terrifying, heart wrenching but yet somehow inspirational story to lose yourself in, start with the first book (Extinction Horizon) and work your way through these great books!

5.0 out of 5 stars Extinction End - A book which won't dissapoint you and needs to be a film or a TV series!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 5, 2016
I've read all of this series of books and I am sad to say this book is currently the last in this series. Ive followed every book as it's been published and it's been a wonderful ride! The journey has been fraught with excitement, passion, upset, love, horror, heartbeat raising horror! You're fearful of what might be on the next page but you're unable to put the book down because you're being drawn into this richly written tale of mankind's struggle to stay alive.
Please read this series and please read Extinction End. Nick, as he is known to his Facebook friends, is a writer of such high caliber and intelligence. He understands what the reader wants and the way this book twists and turns keeping the reader on tenterhooks, joining the characters that you can relate to. You invest in these characters, you want to know what will happen to them. You will not be disappointed in the book Extinction End, read it and you'll want to read Nick's other books because they're brilliant as well.
NB This series of books are perfect to be made into a Film or a TV series. DO IT!

Such a great storyteller. This book is loaded with twists and turns and gut wrenching scenarios. I was totally impressed by the way our hero was lifted out of danger. At one stage I was certain he would die and was ready to put the book away. Nicholas keeps me engrossed by his words, by his story, and by the incredible actions of the characters. If you have even an inking about reading this book, do so. You won't be disappointed. This is some of his best work yet!
