Heat Wave: An Age-Gap Forbidden Romance Kindle Edition
They say when life closes one door, another one opens.
This door happens to lead to paradise.
And a man I can never, ever have.
Still grieving the loss of her sister who died two years ago, the last thing Veronica "Ronnie" Locke needed was to lose her job at one of Chicago’s finest restaurants and have to move back in with her parents. So when a window of opportunity opens for her – running a kitchen at a small Hawaiian hotel – she’d be crazy not to take it.
The only problem is, the man running the hotel drives her crazy: Logan Shephard.
It doesn’t matter that he’s got dark brown eyes, a tall, muscular build that’s sculpted from daily surfing sessions, and a deep Australian accent that makes your toes curl. What does matter is that he’s a grump.
Kind of an asshole, too.
And gets under Ronnie’s skin like no one else.
But the more time Ronnie spends on the island of Kauai, falling in love with the lush land and its carefree lifestyle, the closer she gets to Logan. And the closer she gets to Logan, the more she realizes she may have pegged him all wrong. Maybe it’s the hot, steamy jungles or the invigorating ocean air, but soon their relationship becomes utterly intoxicating.
There’s just one major catch.
The two of them together would incite a scandal neither Ronnie, nor her family, would ever recover from.
Forbidden, Illicit, Off-limits – sometimes the heat is worth surrendering to, even if you get burned.
NOTE: Heat Wave is a complete standalone romance. There is no cheating or adultery in this book, but there is coarse language and explicit sex. Reader discretion is advised.

About the author
Karina Halle is a screenwriter, a former music & travel journalist, and the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, & USA Today bestselling author of River of Shadows, The Royals Next Door, and Black Sunshine, as well as 70 other wild and romantic reads, ranging from light & sexy rom coms to horror/paranormal romance and dark fantasy. Needless to say, whatever genre you're into, she's probably written a romance for it. When she's not traveling, she and her husband split their time between a possibly haunted 120 year-old house in Victoria, BC, and their condo in Los Angeles. She seems a bit boring in her bio but I assure you she's a big ol' goof in real life. For more information, visit www.authorkarinahalle.com.

But he was all hers after that."
Once again, Karina Halle delivers an unforgettable love story where the scenery and stunning locale are as breathtaking as the romance itself. In Heat Wave, Halle wisks us off to Hawaii, where she reunites a brooding hotel owner and his sister-in-law, the woman who saw him first, saw him just before her beautiful sister stepped in and changed the trajectory of all of their fates forever. From the very first sentence of the prologue, I was swept away, I was gripped. I knew immediately that this storyline would be everything I long for in a romance. Angst, longing, unparalleled frustration. There is no greater angst than that which evolves around the notion that the man you crave married your sister. I was carried aloft by Halle's captivating storytelling, by her absolutely stunning writing, by these characters and the impossibility between them as they war and crash in paradise.
"It was the fact that there wasn’t a person alive who would understand us and that our path seemed doomed from the start."
Hawaii is beautiful. Lush. Idyllic. But it's also incredibly dangerous if you don't know what you're getting into. Forbidden, if you believe the signs. And the signs, they are everywhere. The fact that Logan and Veronica's story evolves here, in gorgeous, forbidden Hawaii, is perfectly symbolic of how equally beautiful, dreamlike and absolutely forbidden their connection is. The signs all scream not to step any closer, not to cross the barriers that are there for a reason. But what's on the other side is far too tempting, far too delicious, not to take a closer look. Like the ocean, the attraction between these characters is wild and consuming, enough to drown them both. But it's also what might save them, what might bring them everything they have ever wanted, if they can just battle the waves.
"We’re positively volcanic and the fire between us is growing and giving life to something else entirely. Something new. Something unstoppable."
This is an unconventional love story, one that often frustrated me because of how outside the box it often feels. The romantic in me hates that this romance is so messy, that these characters loved other people once, that there are things about their history that can never be erased. That knowledge is maddening. It doesn't fit our idea of a traditional love story, even though true love conquers all, even though their happily ever after is everything it was ever meant to be. There are things I longed to hear, questions I needed answered, pieces of the puzzle that never fit quite the way I wanted them to. And in the end, those are all the same exact reasons why I loved this story so much. This story is messy. It hurts to read at times. I asked myself over and over again "but why?," "but what if?" And the answer is because real love is messy. True love is never easy, it's complicated, it hurts. And Karina Halle is one of my absolute favorite authors because she never lets her reader forget that. A happy ending wouldn't feel so absolutely glorious without heartbreak and loss and the overwhelming knowledge that life isn't always fair. Life is often too real and it hurts and there are things we all have to go through to get where we want to be and it doesn't always makes sense but it is what it is. That's the glaring honesty that's always present in this author's work and Heat Wave is no exception. You'll get the love story you long for, my dear romantics, but you'll be driven mad getting there.
"People fall in love, people fall out of love. But in the end, almost everyone in the world gets to feel it, live it, taste it. Love is never too good to be true because it is the original truth. And everyone deserves it. Everyone."
I could have highlighted this entire book. Karina Halle steps up her writing game with EVERY. SINGLE. BOOK. Her way with words is simply intoxicating. I feel drunk in her books, high on her words, completely taken aback with her stories. Heat Wave is everything I love in a romance. It delivers all the things I both love and hate to feel. I love to feel frustrated and robbed and lost and this book gave me everything. I could not put it down. Heat Wave is paradise on a page for a reader like me. It's wild and steamy, unpredictable and addictive. It's where you go to get lost, to feel alive, to feel surrounded by dangerous beauty. I've said it before, I'll say it again, every Karina Halle book is my new favorite, and Heat Wave is exactly that.
Enemies to lovers, Hawaii, sexy Australian, and hella sexual tension - what more do I need?
This was a fabulous first read for me by Karina Halle, and I don't know why it took so long for me to read one of her books.
The premise - pretty deep crap. And not something I was completely fond of. But that made it a pretty angsty book for me; many emotions were flowing. Loving the man who married your sister, but the one man who you saw and spoke to first - the one you felt a deep connection with - only for him to turn his back on you as soon as your sister steps in the room? I was livid for a moment; pretty pissed at this whole situation and I didn't think that Logan was going to be able to redeem himself. But he did. Any doubts I still had were blown away by the epilogue that I loved. Yes, I loved the epilogue when I always skip over them. This one had my heart skip a beat and put a smile on my face.
The one thing I got from this story was that people make mistakes, that money, ambition, and life gets in the way; not making everyone's love story easy.
I loved the writing and the symbolism that related to me on such a deep level. And Hawaii being the setting, I felt like I was really there.
So while the trope immediately turned me off - and I don't even have a sister so I can only imagine how that would feel - I loved these characters. I loved their story and relationship growth. And the best sort of book is one that you can relate to real life.
Definitely recommend to those who love angsty, sexy, and contemporary romances.
"Love is never too good to be true because it is the original truth. And everyone deserves it. Everyone.”
Have you ever had a book come into your life at exactly the right time and place? Maybe you’re feeling a little worn down and need a recharge or the long list of meh books you’ve read seems neverending? Or maybe you just miss visiting your sister and her family in beautiful Hawaii, but from the beginning you’re hooked.
"There are a million valid reasons to never think of Logan that way, but the more I tell myself he’s off-limits, the more I shame myself, the more I want to do it."
In a different time and place, Logan would’ve known Veronica was the woman he was destined for from the first moment they met. Talking about where they’d rather be at that very moment left Ronnie with the bone-deep knowledge that Logan was the person for her. Unfortunately after glimpsing her lovely older sister, Logan made a different choice.
Fast forward seven years and there’s a whole lot of water under the bridge. Ronnie’s made a life for herself as cook in Chicago, though recent relationship drama-rama has left her professional future in a precarious place. At the urging of her snotty politician mother Ronnie agrees to work for Logan, hotel owner and widowed brother in law, on the beautiful island of Kauai. Even though Ronnie’s managed to keep Logan in the brother in law box since he married her perfect older sister, how does she manage to keep her distance now that he’s her boss?
Let me start off by being completely honest with you. When I first started this and saw the words “taboo” and “brother in law” in some of the reviews I read, I wasn’t sure what to expect. Was this going to be one of those quickly churned out, smutty smut books a la Kindle Unlimited like Ms. Halle’s own Smut (I freaking LOVED that one, btw) references? Or would I be lucky enough to get a kickass story? I should’ve known I was about to get the good stuff.
Heat Wave worked for me in a big way because nothing between Ronnie and Logan was a given and at the same time nothing was insurmountable. I think that’s my roundabout way of saying the obvious issues were handled with care and realistically. Ronnie had some work to do to get to a place where she was comfortable embarking on a relationship of any kind with Logan, both because of what he meant to her and what he’d been to her sister. Once her preconceived and often misinformed anger issues were dealt with, it left her with some pretty strong feelings to deal with, both via her and Logan who, when he finally gives into the banked heat between them, makes no bones about exactly what he wants.
"Hell, heaven, whatever this is, I know it’s something I’ll never come back from. I know I’ll never want to. In my wildest, kinkiest dreams about him, it’s never been this good. "
Karina Hale has outdone herself, and most authors I’ve read if I’m being honest, when it comes to setting the scene. To put it bluntly, I’m normally not a fan of flowery prose and descriptions. Who the hell has the time? Maybe it’s because I happen to have my own Ohana living in Hawaii and am jonesing for a visit or maybe it’s because this is some well written stuff, but every single time I read about a sneaky plumeria or a strutting rooster, it only managed to add to my reading bliss.
In case you can’t tell from my gushing review, I freaking loved this book. The depth of feelings mixed with the beautiful scenery mixed with the perfect amount of angst left me wiping tears with a huge smile on my face. There’s nothing better in my reading world.

Loved Veronica, Logan and their forbidden feelings and desires for each other. I knew when they finally stopped fighting their feelings for each other it would be explosive and it was....it caused quite the heat wave. Loved everything about this book.
Karina's words takes you away, I love how she's been to all these beautiful places in her books so she can describe them to you with prefect details....it really makes a big difference.
Highly recommend this one 🌺🌴🌺
This book had it all a sexy dirty talking lead male a sassy sometimes wounded female who still managed to be a strong character and a bunch of other people that at times I thought were to good to believe but it's ok it's fiction after all her bitch of a mother made up for it.
If you want a book that keeps you turning over the pages and like me didn't want to put it down to go to bed (1.30 ) then this is for you not that it kept me on the edge of my seat because it was pretty predictable but saying that it in no way did that spoil the story it was a really good read.
I'll make sure I read more from Karina Halle.
