Mayhem & Mass (A Sister Lou Mystery Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.3 4.3 out of 5 stars 106 ratings

A Los Angeles transplant, Sister Louise “Lou” LaSalle feels right at home in Briar Coast, New York. After all, her beloved nephew, Chris, works at the college founded by her congregation. But while Sister Lou has always played by the rules, she’s about to have her faith in herself tested—by murder . . .

Sister Lou expects some pushback when she invites her friend, Maurice Jordan, to be the guest speaker for the St. Hermione of Ephesus Feast Day presentation. The theology professor is known far and wide for his controversial views. What she’s not prepared for is finding him dead in his hotel room, bashed over the head.

When the local deputies focus on the members of her congregation as suspects, Sister Lou takes matters into her own hands. Against Chris’s wishes, she teams up with a cynical local reporter to delve into Maurice’s life. The unlikely partners in crime-fighting uncover a litany of both devotees and detractors. And though it might take a miracle to find the killer, Sister Lou vows to carry on until justice prevails . . .

Editorial Reviews

Review

Praise for Olivia Matthews' Mayhem and Mass:

"The possibility of romance between two of the characters provides a pleasant foil to Sister Lou's pursuit of the truth for the sake of her old friend.in this debut of a saintly sleuth with some very human failings."
-Kirkus Reviews

"Although Sister Lou took the vow of obedience, she doesn't always play by traditional rules, as readers of this first-in-the-new-series will soon find out. "Mayhem & Mass" is a promising addition to the cozy mystery genre, and its protagonist is delightful!"
-Suspense Magazine

"Kudos to Olivia Matthews, who has created a new "hook" to draw in readers."
-Mystery Scene Magazine

"A spunky leading lady-who just happens to be a nun. Lou will go to the ends of the earth to uncover the truth. The plot is fast-paced and believable..A worthwhile mystery series here that fans will adore."
-RT Book Reviews"

Mayhem & Mass was an interesting and unique read for me. The idea of a sister tracking down the murder of a close friend was totally different. The characters were creative, the setting captivated me, and the plot was absolutely perfect! I loved the read!

Sister Lou is a Sister rather than a Nun. Now not being Catholic I have no idea what that means. But it does provide an intriguing backdrop for tracking down a killer. A very good and very long time friend of Sister Lou is killed and Sister Lou doesn’t feel the deputies are as aggressive in finding the killer as she would like. She, her nephew and a reporter work together to solve the case. It was a joy getting to know these new characters.

Mayhem & Mass by Olivia Mathews is book one in the Sister Lou Mysteries series. These are labeled as cozy mysteries, and that is exactly what this was: a gentle mystery to cozy up on the sofa and read. This book introduces us to Sister Louise LaSalle, a Sister at St Hermione of Ephesus in Briar Coast, New York. Sister Lou is excited about her best friend, Dr. Maurice Jordan being the featured speaker for the Feast Dsy presentation. A controversial college professor, writer, and speaker, Dr. Jordan is murdered the day of the presentation, and although shocked at finding his body, Sister Lou is determined to learn the identity of the murderer. With the help of her nephew, Christian "Chris" LaSalle, who is Interim Vice President for College Advancement at St Hermione of Ephesus, and Sharelle "Shari" Henson, a new member of the community and reporter for the Briar Coast Telegraph Newspaper, Sister Lou carefully formulates a list of and interviews suspects. This was an easy-to-read mystery that was devoid of blood and gore, but full of twists and turns in the investigation. It also delves into the internal power play by one of the other sisters who wants to replace Sister Lou as head of the Congregational Leadership Team, as well as the pushback Shari receives from the newspaper editor about her participation in the murder investigation.

So many subplots that are carefully woven together in a wonderful story. Kudos to author Olivia Mathews for a wonderful first book. I can't wait for book two this summer!

I really would give this a 3 1/2. A cute cozy mystery. Good premise . Down side ... a lot of repetition and descriptions of clothing ad nauseum. Liked the characters but again, too much replay of character traits ... ive ordered book 2 to see if any of this changes

Love sister Lou. Now I ain't going to lie it's a sister up in this book I wish she was murdered instead of the character that was killed, She was nasty and mean. but maybe She will in another book LOL..

Olivia Matthews wrote a great mystery! I enjoyed this book and will highly recommend it. Her writing shows the loyalty from friends to family. I also liked how Ms. Matthews shows a side to Nuns that have issues with each other for they are human too! Great read! Grab your copy so you are ready for the next book in the series.
