With encouragement and compassion Hayes leads one through the steps of getting unstuck in one’s life. I have felt stuck in many different areas in my life and I am looking forward to working through her steps to get “FREED from Stuck”. I appreciate Hayes’ honesty in that this is “not a silver bullet or overnight quick-fix”. It is a journey, and while the steps might be the same for each person reading this book, the paths to “FREED” may look very different. I am very excited to take the steps toward a life full of possibilities instead of staying in one stuck in fear.
The self-help movement in books may have begun earlier, but it is most notably marked in 1964 by Eric Berne’s Games People Play. Unfortunately, much of the essential wisdom of Berne’s book was lost by the oversimplification of its message in Thomas Harris’, I’m OK, You’re OK, and subsequently in Claude Steiner’s, Scripts People Live. We currently retain fundamental notions of Berne’s insight in songs, movies, and TV shows such as “Game of Thrones”.
Susie Hayes in her new self-help book, Freed from Stuck: Dare to Cross the Bridge Beyond Grief, Trauma, and Self-Sabotage to Discover Lasting Change Now, has offered a fresh and very useful metaphor of “the bridge” in which to understand, process, manage, and develop healthy coping strategies amidst the often tough and sometimes brutal life events we experience. And, in the rich tradition of Games People Play, Freed from Stuck delivers these strategies in an extremely accessible and common sense fashion. FREED represents the acronym Face, Recognize, Embrace, Exit, and Discover pathways through (not over, not under, nor around) the bridge of obstacles, challenges, and troubles that beset us all as we travel the road of life. Hayes, as an experienced psychotherapist of over 25 years, credibly delivers pragmatic devices of a thoughtful and thorough nature that invite people to engage difficult tasks of dealing with external, internal, emotional, perceptional, and unconscious blocks that frequently prevent us from dealing with appropriate questions; grasping the magnitude of knowing what you want; accepting what and how you are stuck; navigating the pathway through these blocks; and clearly seeing how to construct a better quality of life.
These are no small tasks. Nonetheless, Hayes outlines forthright and deliberative steps all the way through the healing process that allow anyone to find direction and keep pace with a future focus that engenders hope and growth. As a practicing psychotherapist myself, I can attest to the virtues of providing clients practical and accessible strategies that help people feel they are making progress in ways that foster self-reliance and personal empowerment. Freed from Stuck delivers on each of these counts. Particularly helpful is the way in which Hayes frames “the bridge” that everyone must go through as they deal with grief, trauma, pain, and self-sabotage.
“The bridge” as a metaphor communicates a powerful image of gaining and maintaining future focus as we move from subjective interpretations that block us from seeing our full potential that we need to grow toward and fulfill. As a self-help framework, this “bridge” is a healthy “game” we all could do well to move forward through. The smaller steps Hayes discusses as ways to progressively move through this bridge create a constructive method of sustaining our movement forward. Whether your blocks or obstacles in life are large or small, Freed from Stuck will get you moving in a healthy direction.
Whatever your stuckness, you will find her book to be enormously helpful.
