In Detail
Docker is a platform for running server applications in lightweight units called containers. You can run Docker on Windows Server 2016 and Windows 10, and run your existing apps in containers to get significant improvements in efficiency, security, and portability.
This book teaches you all you need to know about Docker on Windows, from 101 to deploying highly-available workloads in production. This book takes you on a Docker journey, starting with the key concepts and simple examples of how to run .NET Framework and .NET Core apps in Windows Docker containers. Then it moves on to more complex examples—using Docker to modernize the architecture and development of traditional ASP.NET and SQL Server apps.
The examples show you how to break up monoliths into distributed apps and deploy them to a clustered environment in the cloud, using the exact same artifacts you use to run them locally. To help you move confidently to production, it then explains Docker security, and the management and support options.
The book finishes with guidance on getting started with Docker in your own projects, together with some real-world case studies for Docker implementations, from small-scale on-premises apps to very large-scale apps running on Azure.
Style and approach
Using a step-by-step approach, this book shows you how to use Docker on Windows. It includes practical examples and real-world technical and business scenarios that will help you effectively implement Docker in your environment. There are over 50 examples of Dockerized applications, using C# .NET projects as the source and packaging them into Docker images.

About the Author
Elton Stoneman has been a Microsoft MVP for 8 years and a Pluralsight author for 5 years, and now he works for Docker, Inc. Before joining Docker, he spent 15 years as a consultant, architecting and delivering very large and very successful solutions built on .NET and powered by Windows and Azure.
All the years he worked with Windows, Elton had a secret Linux server in his attic or garage, running core services for the home, such as music servers and file servers. When Docker started to take hold in the Linux world, Elton had early experience in a crossplatform project he worked on, got hooked, and started to focus on containers. He was made a Docker Captain, and for a time, was one of only two people in the world who were both a Microsoft MVP and a Docker Captain.
Elton blogs about Docker, tweets about Docker, and speaks about Docker all the time. He is a regular at local events and user groups; you will often see him at Docker London, London DevOps, and WinOps London. He's also had great fun speaking at fantastic conferences around the world, including DockerCon, NDC London, SDD, DevSum, and NDC Oslo.

About the author

Microsoft MVP | Pluralsight Author | Architect @Docker
I'm a Pluralsight Author, Microsoft MVP and work at Docker as an architect. I've been architecting and delivering successful solutions with Microsoft technologies since 2000, most recently Big Data and API implementations in Azure, and distributed applications with Docker and Kubernetes.
Currently I'm interested the evolution of the Microsoft stack, exploring the great opportunities opening up with .NET Framework apps running in Windows containers, .NET Core apps running in Linux containers, and running Docker on Azure.
I'm a regular presenter and workshop host at conferences. I've been fortunate to speak at NDC, DockerCon, SDD, DevSum, Container Camp and WinOps. You'll often see me at user groups too - Docker London, London DevOps and WinOps are my locals.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 13, 2017I love this book. It is densely packed with fast-moving, insightful and real-world guidance. Other sources I've studied have been too context-free for my own tastes. In contrast, "Docker on Windows" has a writing style and progression of examples which, for me, have been perfect for comprehension and retention.
The path carved by Microsoft to bring a native Docker to Windows is very exciting - and I've found Stoneman's book the perfect place to start mastering this new frontier. Just get it; you'll be glad you did.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 8, 2018I started reading this book and working through the exercises yesterday. It contains real world examples and helps explain how to structure containers and incorporate them in a production deployment process. I'm extremely excited to continue working through this book and teaching myself docker. I would highly recommend it for anyone who like me knows little to nothing about docker and looking to learn.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 25, 2018I found this book invaluable due to the specific coverage of Windows containers. Information on the internet is typically oriented towards Linux especially in the networking area.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 11, 2018Great introduction to Docker on Windows. I keep using it as a reference as I plow into Docker.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 8, 2017Thorough primer on Docker with excellent real world code samples. Highly recommended for professionals wanting to expand their skillsets with containers.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 17, 2020everything in this book so far is way out of date. and even the initial examples do not work in 2020. Please update this book.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 13, 2018When you read a Technical book, especially a book on a technology like Docker which is so **hot** these days, you can either get a bunch of instructions and do this do that or a snapshot of the original product documentation. However, when I read this book (let me admit, I am one of those readers who buys a lot of books but rarely completes one), I was just hooked. Now first of all, this is a book from the "Elton Stoneman", A Docker Captain, a renowned Pluralsight author and probably the most awesome Technical Evangelist.
The book promises on its title, takes you on a journey from zero to a Docker Champion. Elton not only teaches you the fundamentals but also offers his industry experience in designing your applications using Containers.I really enjoyed, Chapter 5, where he dwells into adopting a container first solution. The best part of the course was powering the Continous deployment pipeline (Chapter 10) using Jenkins.
If you even thinking of mastering Docker, this is the book to buy. Read it cover to cover, I finished this during my long weekend and has really helped me understand the entire process of designing, deploying and managing Container workloads for my customers.
As I said, not just do this and do that, but best practices, troubleshooting and a wealth of industry experience.
I will buy any book that has Elton Stoneman as the author!. Period.

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth its weight in gold
Third book on docker I've read (after Docker in Action, and Deep Dive) and I wasn't convinced it would tell me much new. Was I wrong. If you are deploying windows containers, it's as essential as Deep Dive. Even just using backslashes in paths instead of forward slashes causes problems. When it comes to the details of production deployment, you will need this book.
