Editorial Reviews

Review

A debut novel from a gifted writer with a sure hand. As much fun to read as Lee Child's Jack Reacher.

-- "J. A. Jance, New York Times bestselling author, on Past Crimes"

Every Day Above Ground is utterly addictive. A taut, riveting thriller with every nuance striking a perfect chord. The plot is gripping, the fighting realistic, and the characters well developed. Glen Erik Hamilton can flat-out write with the best of the best.

-- "Robert Dugoni, New York Times bestselling author, on Every Day Above Ground"

If you like Lee Child's Jack Reacher, you will absolutely love Van Shaw.

-- "Deborah Crombie, New York Times bestselling author"

Hamilton's outstanding third Van Shaw novel fulfills the promise of the earlier entries...The suspenseful, fast-moving plot is a good match for the empathetic, nuanced lead.

-- "Publishers Weekly (starred review)"

This guy has got what it takes.

-- "Lee Child, #1 New York Times bestselling author, praise for the author"

From the Back Cover

When an old acquaintance of Van Shaw’s late grandfather shows up in Seattle, he offers the broke veteran a money-making opportunity—an easy fortune in gold. For the dying man, the money is a legacy to ensure his daughter’s future. For Van, the gold is cash he desperately needs to tide him over until he can find legitimate work.

But Van knows that nothing is ever quite as easy as it seems. The safe holding the fortune turns out to be deadly bait set by a malevolent player with tremendous resources, an army of hunters, and a lifetime of hatred. Now Shaw’s partner is in the clutches of this shadowy mastermind, and the former Army Ranger may be his next prey. To discover who has them in the crosshairs, Van must play a dangerous game, with foes on every side.

For Van Shaw, every day above ground is a good day, and all the better if he can stay on the right side of the law, even though crime is his gift . . . and in his blood.

This is a non-stop thriller about a thief with good intentions. It is well-written and a very entertaining read.

I enjoyed this book. The characters were well developed and personable. The story line kept my interest from the beginning and there were plenty of twists and turns. I will be reading the other books in the series

Can’t wait for more stories with Van Shaw. Well plotted, well written, and fun to read. Couldn’t put this one down.

Van Shaw is an unusual hero indeed. A criminal upbringing left him with handy tricks and burglary skills. Couple those with strong ethics and an opposition to violence, and interesting results follow. A great read!

This is the first book by this author that I’ve read. The main character, Van, is well developed and has depth. I had trouble differentiating the myriad of secondary characters though. This plot was convoluted and also difficult to follow for me. However, I like the overall writing style and will read the first two books in the series to get a better bead on Van’s back story.

Glen Erik Hamilton is officially my new favorite author. The Van Shaw series is great. Likable characters. Great setting. Good stories. Excellent writing.

I enjoy how the author takes us back in time to help round out the why's of his current actions. This is the third in the series; I found some of the situations and other players a bit more convoluted than the earlier books.
I look forward to the next Van Shaw book, yet hope he comes back to a more purposeful life.

Things are quiet for Van Shaw. He’s low on funds and has time on his hands. Building a house is giving him something to cling to but his heart is not in it and he misses the buzzes he used to get with his late and much lamented Grandad Dono.

Adventure beckons when a freshly released jailbird,O’Hasson, tracks Van down and tells him of a stash of gold bars hidden in a safe in a building scheduled for demolition; just asking to be liberated. Van mulls it over but you know full well that he cannot pass this escapade up. Cracking the safe proves to be straight forward; it’s from that point on that matters go south in a hurry.

Naturally, the gold had not just been sitting in the safe unnoticed. Others have an interest in it, the Slattery brothers and the very alluring Ingrid Ekby. There is bad blood here and Van soon gets caught in a firefight between these opposing factions. Added to the mix is O’Hasson’s daughter. Only a youngster but certainly no shrinking violet. Addy, Van’s neighbourly friend also features throughout the book and does her level best to see that Van returns in one piece.

The plot is well constructed and gives Van plenty of scope to keep his military skills sharply honed. A very pacy tail and easily the strongest of this series to date.

Every Day Above Ground is Glen Erik Hamilton third novel in the Van Shaw novels. All of the books to date have been narrated in first person, which he has pulled off quite well. For a first person novel the plot is revealed in quiet I will structured way. There are two parallel stories running in this one as there were in the previous two novels. They are straightforward enough but have some complexity with many twists and turns. I enjoyed this third iteration and have read the first 3 novels in this series within about 2 weeks.

4.0 out of 5 stars Seattle set robbers and psychopaths

A violent and bloody caper movie in book form involving several cons and machinations, four million in gold bars and about twelve deaths. Van Shaw keeps to his ethos of not killing anyone in cold blood but he doesn’t mind doing it in anger or indirectly, apart from other matters he is an indestructible hypocrite. A bit too long but, as everything needed to be sorted out, justifiable as it has a breathless pace though the story of Christmas when Van was twelve while giving more flesh to his character just made it longer. Already ordered the next one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cracking good stories, move over Jack Reacher, Van Shaw has arrived!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 26, 2020
I am really enjoying the Van Shaw books. This one is the third in the series and every bit as good as the two preceding it. Van Shaw is a former army ranger with a chequered past and lots of unsavoury acquaintances that keep crawling out of the woodwork to get him into hot water, the plots are very well crafted and plenty of twists to keep you guessing and turning the pages. Addictive.
