In the Ruins (Metahuman Files Book 2) Kindle Edition
Captain Jamie Callahan and Staff Sergeant Kyle Brannigan know the Metahuman Defense Force frowns on fraternization, but being together is worth the risk. When an Alpha Team mission requires Jamie and Kyle to fake a very real relationship in order to infiltrate a criminal alliance, Jamie understands it won’t be easy. To ensure the mission is a success, he’ll have to put his family’s name on the line to play the role of an estranged billionaire’s son, discharged from the military, looking to make his own shady business deals.
Except the target this time is no ordinary businessman, and the bargain being made is a problem for everyone. Surrounded by the enemy on foreign soil, Jamie and Kyle must trust each other now more than ever. Their covers—and the life they’re trying to build together outside the political spotlight—depend on it.

In the Ruins is an M/M scifi military romance. Sounds like a mouthful, yeah? Hailey Turner does it all and does it well. Explosions and chases. Shoot outs and teamwork. From tender love to sexy kink. All delicately balanced by the skill of author, Hailey deftly weaves world building, character development, action and caring, always moving the plot forward.
The saying goes that you set a thief to catch a thief and TPTB need to catch a terrorist. Not having a trustworthy terrorist on hand to use as bait, they decide to use Jamie. Because while Captain Jamie Callahan might be head of the Alpha team he is also James Callahan, son of Richard Callahan, one of the richest men in the world. Which is the perfect bait when it comes to this trap. Let the excitement commence!
Jamie and Kyle simply work. Not just as a couple but as human beings. Or metahumans, as it were. Each bring parts of themselves to the table that the other desperately needs. Together they are awesome, in the field and the bedroom. Yes, bedroom. And the wall. The shower is fair game too! Hot man on man action enclosed.
In the Ruins leaves you very satisfied and reveals more of the series' overall story arc. Hailey answered questions I hadn't even thought to ask, adding so much more to the reality of the characters and the world they live in.
Normally the second book in a series is filler, something to get through in order to be up to date for the next installment. Hailey Turner breaks this stereotype wide open. While I loved In the Wreckage, In the Ruins is now my favorite. So far. Now is the time to pine for Metahuman Files 03.
You don't have to read In the Wreckage before In the Ruins, Hailey Turner does an excellent job of bringing you up to date without sending those who have read 01 into snooze mode. But why would you not want to?
Hailey Turner simply nails it. Again!
I did receive an ARC in order to review this work. I'm not crazy. Of course I'm writing a review. This book is awesome. As soon as In the Ruins went live, I ran over here to purchase it as well. Cause when it's good? Dayam! It's SO good!
This Action-adventure, fantasy, mystery, techno -thriller , romance series is ADDICTIVE .
In book 2 , Hailey Turner continues and expand the main plotlines she established in book 1.
The stakes are high and many people can get hurt in the process.
Kyle and Jaime bond is growing stronger . Their chemistry is off the charts hot, so are their encounters.
This is a fun and entertaining story. I love all the characters. The heroes and secondary characters are flesh out, likeable, three dimensional and can seriously kick some arse. Even the villains are well developed and intriguing.
The world building is believable, layered and detailed. As I said in mine previous review, X-Men, meets Fantastic Four meets hot and sexy.
Why 4 instead of 5 ?
That's because I had trouble with some of the plotline . Jamie was asked by the government to put his family , his team and their families safety and future well being in danger for a mission . Nothing in his character profile says he could ever agree to something so drastic, ill thought out , morally and ethically wrong.
Besides, in the real world, his family political and socio-economic status would have made it impossible. Let's be real, you can suspension of disbelief until a point.
Overall: A thrilling, fast paced and satisfying read.
Onward to book three.
The action is fast paced and gritty. There is violence galore.
The relationships between the original members of the team are solid, and the addition of a new member is interesting in both its cause and in its effect on the team. After what happened in the last book, trust is hard earned with these guys.
The difference in the makeup of the team opens up new possibilities for future books and relationships.
The secondary characters give color to the work and enhance the story line in their support of the Alpha Team. I enjoyed seeing the Jamie and the rest of his team working with others in this ongoing battle.
Jamie and Kyle’s story continues in this installment. They still have a visceral reaction to each other but have to hide what they feel from everyone except the team. The sex is explosive and sometimes uncomfortable to read. Once again it is hard, hot, sloppy and intense. It's “If you've got 'em, smoke 'em” type of sex. Whew!
The storyline, which began in the first book and continues here, is well thought out and executed.
The many strands of information are connected and presented in a way that gives a smooth flow to the action and pulls you into the world that the author has drawn so well.
I look forward to the next installment.
Loved the action, the intrigue, the set up for the next book(s) in the series. Most of all, I enjoyed getting to see Jaime and Kyle together as a couple. They're awesome together, both as team members and lovers. I also liked the hints that we got about Alexie and newcomer, Sean. And I've got to hand it to Hailey Turner for coming up with a very unusual setting for declarations of love!
Much of this book is set in London, and we got to meet someone from Jaime's past, Liam, whom I hope we get to see more of as he intrigued me, being a crime fighting royal.
I would not recommend this as a standalone, there's too much backstory between the team members as well as the main through line with the Splice/metahuman creation.

I remember that one of the main issues when reading the first novel was the fact tha Jamie and Kyle seemed to suffer from insta-love, a trope I literally cannot stand. However, this time around, their relationship is fully fleshed out and much more believable: it's not just sex for them anymore, it's also trust and care and emotion neither of them are sure what to do about. I loved seeing them together, but what I reallly really adored was the interactions and bond between every single one of Alpha Team's members. I'd die for Katie and Madison and Annabelle, and Alexei is probably one of the most intriguing character so far. And I really cannot express how excited I am to finally read about his life story, and also his love story.
Speaking of which, I already love Sean so much more than I ought to after so little. I love Kyle and Jamie (especially Kyle; I found Jamie a bit difficult to like at times, but I guess that's up to the reader's taste and preference), I really do. But those short moments with Sean and Alexei? I AM READY to be completely destroyed by them. It was sparks from the start, and the main reason is wholly down to how awesome and intriguing they both are.
I'm officially on the "Metahuman Files" obsession wagon and that makes me so happy. So very excited and curious to discover what happens next.

Working on what the team found on their last "case" it seems that the criminal underground is still determined to create more metahumans, and they aren't afraid to hurt any innocents while doing so. The best way to get to them is to use the team's public identities and put them undercover with Jamie and his money as bait. Doing this goes against everything the team has done for years, putting themselves out in the public eye and luring in the criminals to follow them. It also puts Jamie in the position of needing to become the man he once was, the rich boy who is better than everyone else. It puts plenty of stress on the team, both with their not-so-covered covers, and the way Jamie has to act. To fulfill the act Kyle plays the role of kept man, a role that grates on his own independence, and puts the stress of their secret out in the open. The team has to dance a line between playing this undercover role and luring out the worst of the society, all while doing their best to keep the public at large safe.
Kyle and Jamie have really deepened their relationship by this book, and despite the stressful circumstances, being public only goes further to help that. Theirs is a secret relationship out of fear of loss of their team, their family, if the secret gets out. Family means everything to both of them,so the secret is not a decision of one but of both. Being able to be open helps but it hurts as well, as they see how others react to them, both in public and in private. The two are several social statuses apart and the public only sees that relationship in one way. It makes them truly think about what it is that has brought them together, and the result is very well done.
The mission that the team is on in this book does not finish with this book. Things are not left in a cliffhanger, with the current story arc clearly having finished, but they do not wrap things up with the goings on. There is much more to be done before this job is finished and Jamie and his team are in it for the long haul. This just opened up a great direction for the series and I look forward to seeing what happens as it continues on!

In this installment Team Alpha, with the help of ex-CIA Agent Sean Delaney, (phase-shifter) travel to London where Jansen lives. Due to Callahan's background MDF want to use Callahan's social status to get close to the bad guys and that means he has to shed Team Alpha, and his MFD skin and step into his billionaire lifestyle to try and out-con the bad guys.
Book 2 introduces us to more Metahumans, like Liam Wessex, Lt. Colonel, in the United Kingdom's UMG, who is good friends with Jamie, a metahuman and 12th in line to the British throne. And Emmet Doyle, and Cillian Halloran 2 Reborn IRA agents intent on killing Londoners' in a massive terrorists attack, as well as Agent Delaney, who they meet when he was deep, deep under-cover for the CIA prior to his exposure to Splice.
This installment continues the Splice virus theme from book 1, and primarily deals with the fall-out of Jamie appearing to step away from his unit and the consequences that this mission has on Kyle and Team Alpha as they fight to stop a massive terrorist attack on London. Like book 1, action scenes are fabulous, team Alpha is amazing, Callahan and Brannigan navigate their burgeoning relationship and Jamie fights his own demons that revolve around issues with his family and his ethics with wanting to be with a junior enlisted man. The lingo is military and well done and the plot makes sense. Great second book.
While neither book 1 nor book 2 were cliffhangers the series does continue and realistically the books should be read in order for maximum enjoyment and understanding.
