Gray: The Complete Collection Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 339 ratings

A dense black cloud boiled up in the southeastern sky. It rose high and fast, like a time-lapse movie of the birth of a thunderhead. But it was no rain cloud. Wholly black, it reached up and up until it loomed over her, blocking out the sun. Somehow, she knew, it was Death coming for her.

Pre-med student Coral is on vacation in Idaho when something terrible happens. The black cloud is followed by a wildfire and searing heat that lasts for days. She survives deep in a cave but emerges days later to find the world transformed, with blackened trees, an ash-filled sky, and no living creatures stirring--except for her.

So begins her desperate journey: to find water, and food, and other survivors...and the answer to the mystery of what happened.

Note: this is a combined edition of Gray I, Gray II, and Gray III, originally published in 2015 and 2016.

I was a little leery to start this after some other reviews I read. Complaints about Coral in particular acting unlike a 19 year old pre-med student. At no time did she present herself as a Doctor. She did not have knowledge that was unrealistic and didn't act in any way someone stuck in her situation would act. Contrary to other reviews there was little calorie counting as well. There was definitely the consideration of the amount of calories one would need to survive but nothing like someone onna diet now would do. Lastly, I remember her saying latrine once, though other characters said it as well. No big deal. Don't let the nitpicky reviews put you off. It was definitely a good read and a somewhat different take on the post-apocalyptic genre.

If you enjoy post apocalyptic stories this is a must read. It really digs into the horrible choices we would all have to make to stay alive. There are so many things we take for granted on a daily basis, this book makes me thankful. And… ready to hoard a little bit!

    CONTAINS SPOILERS:

I have the audio version. The narrator, Lauren Fortgang, does a good job of reading the book. Lauren is good at making the characters sound different. She gives them personality.

The story is well-written. However, it's too drawn out. There are too many details. There is too much repetition.

I didn't like the main character, Coral. I didn't like listening to her thoughts. She has some very mean thoughts, looks at practically everyone else as being the enemy, and is impatient, paranoid, obstinate, judgmental, selfish, cold, and ruthless. The fact that she was severely and chronically dehydrated and hungry and was traumatized did not justify her ruthless actions. In fact, it should have made her more empathetic and compassionate.

I did like the fact that the story was able living on Earth after an apocalyptic event, such as the event that happened. I did like the fact that Coral was introverted and had had or had a few very close relatives/friends.

I kept reading in hope that there would be more to the story. I was disappointed.

I had a lot of issues with the aftermath of the apocalyptic event:

    Dehydration and Starvation:

I have a digestive disease and have experienced severe dehydration and starvation for periods of six months to a year. It's not like Lou Cadle describes.

    Dust:

The dust should have affected people's respiratory systems. People should have been getting sick and dying from the dust.

    Food:

If non-pull-top cans survived the event, then there should have been plenty of food available.

    Crazy People:

If there were an apocalyptic event, then people would not be going crazy like Lou Cadle describes. Most people would be in shock. Most people would be coming together to survive.

    Walmart:

Let's say there were a town that had one Walmart and no other food stores. There still would have been at least a few gas stations with minimarts. These all would have had canned goods.

If Walmart were the only store with canned food, then the cans would have all been gone by the time Coral and Benjamin arrived. The others would have removed them from the store and hid them.

    Train:

I have no idea why Coral and Benjamin didn't find a better hiding place and hide as many cans as possible. They had found the train. It was only a matter of time before others found it too.

Again, Coral sees a couple of crazy violent men. What is the chance of that?

    The UFO Cultists:

I have no idea why Coral told the UFO cultists that she and Benjamin were not married. It would have been easier for Benjamin to protect her if she had said they were married.

Most of the cultists were not bad people. I even liked Brim better than Coral. Brim was right. Coral was nothing but trouble.

    Boise:

Boise would have been a God-send after what Coral and Benjamin had been through. Food, clothing, shelter, and no religious cultists.

No animals to hunt. Missing people. Arguments about food. Mystery meat. Something not being right. And it never occurred to them that maybe they were eating people?

Well written. The characters are very different than you're average post-apocalyptic novel in that they are not suddenly super heroes. They're normal people dealing with an unthinkable event and are radically unprepared. I like that the main characters learned as they went, sometimes the very hard way. I liked all 3 and especially liked how it ended. How the different other groups reacted to the event was also very interesting and believable. thank you for the effort. It was very enjoyable and fast-reading.
