This was an interesting, but highly unusual book that was not for the weak willed. The book is extremely well plotted as it goes in directions that one does not expect, but that seem extremely apt once the reader works out where the story is headed. In addition, it is well written in an almost painfully vivid way. So much so, that one feels every experience each character goes through on a visceral level and the utopian world that was the setting for much of the novel is intricately detailed and described. Along with this, on a purely technical level the prose is graceful and a pleasure to take in. However, Utopia's most impressive achievement was its characters. They were all three dimensional and well rounded. This was especially true of the protagonist, Scott. He was an infinitely complex, endlessly intriguing person whose motivations the reader can sympathize with and whose journey you cannot help, but want to follow.
There was much about Utopia that should be praised and admired. But, if there was anything that I found distasteful about it, it was how accurately it depicted grief and depression especially in a four year old Scott at the beginning. Scott's melancholia over the death of his grandmother left such a black cloud that I struggled with the book at its start. Moreover, as the book progressed when it had less than happy moments one could feel as if he or she was plunged into a very dark hole that it was exceedingly difficult to get out of. Still, that may speak to the author's considerable talent. But, be forewarned this book is not for the faint of heart and when it gets black, it gets BLACK.
So, if you would like to read something a little different than most fiction or simply appreciate good writing, you may want to sit down with Utopia. You will definitely find something that you have not seen before.

The best thing this book has going for it is the story. It's highly imaginative, the sort of epic type of fantasy novel that is often so popular. There's an author's note at the end that says it took him over ten years to complete the book. There's definitely evidence of that in the crazy amount of action and detail throughout.
I was a bit confused by the pacing of the book. It seemed like some things were explained thoroughly and very nicely and then others felt rushed. I think the story could be expanded with more time spent on everything that's going on. It would give the story that much more depth and would aid in the character development, which was a bit lacking most of the time. I think the author had a very clear image in mind while he was writing, but I would've liked even more detail and description, more definition of the settings. It would just enrich the story and add to the imagery.
There were moments that were very valuable to the story and were very well done. I thought the scene where Scott is explaining to Kirri about his friend who had committed suicide was an excellent scene as it really helped to develop the character of Scott and draw you into the character more. At the same time, I would've liked to have seen more time devoted to the development of Scott's powers and how he learned to manipulate electricity so seemingly quickly.
Overall, the story was well-structured as a first novel in a series. You get the main character, the main over-reaching conflict of the series, the smaller conflict of this book, the love interest for the main character (cute to base it on the author's girlfriend,) and the ominous foreboding at the end which will necessitate the continuation of the series. So, it has potential to turn into quite the series, full of action, no doubt, and even more inventive characters and battles. I would hope that for future books the author would work a bit more on proofreading and formatting. The ebook version was a little all over the place in the formatting, making the reading a little difficult at times, like where there would be breaks between paragraphs when the story wasn't shifting out of that scene. Still, though, if you can overlook those types of things and focus on the idea, the story, it's rather interesting and fun. A decent first effort at publishing and nice to see the author follow through on an idea so long in the making.

Utopia is the first book in Utopia Series by Scott Towers. It is a fantasy book that revolves around the life of a young boy (4 years old) that experiences a traumatic event where his grandmother passed away.

I like how the book started; it gave away what you need in the background. It went delve straight right to the story that led to Scott being transferred to the other world. The book was short, around 128 pages but the plot of the book was very good and interesting. There was no part of the book that could bore you out as the story kept on changing its direction and I really like it. The other big plus was where the author explained about what happened in Utopia before, about the royal family and how the evil forces destroyed the place once.

I thoroughly enjoy the entire book but at the time I felt like some of Scotts action felt too mature for his age. I think if he were 6 or 7 years old, it would make it more believable. The other characters were fun to read, there were talking animals, royal family members, a normal human being and so much more.

To conclude, I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is up for a light read. I finish this in less than 4 hours and would probably read the second one right away if it were available.
