Review

“Erica is one of the warmest, kindest women I know, so it’s no surprise that Nurture reveals how to take gentle care of yourself during pregnancy, childbirth, and motherhood (as you gradually develop what she calls your “mother muscle”). Nurture supports all different approaches-home births, epidurals, breastfeeding, bottle feeding-so you can choose your own path with Erica's reassuring advice. It’s like having an expert doula and friend at your fingertips. I’d recommend this book for the nightstand of every expectant mother.”-Joanna Goddard, founder of the women’s lifestyle website Cup of Jo

“Beyond having a seemingly encyclopedic knowledge of all things pregnancy, birth, and baby, Erica Chidi Cohen truly cares about the wellbeing of all mothers, babies, and partners. This book is for everyone-regardless of their birth preferences, background, or beliefs. The knowledge my husband and I gained reading this book has us feeling prepared, empowered, and ready for whatever lies ahead.”-
Whitney Port, author, fashion designer, and television personality

“Erica's loving, practical, and judgment-free approach is rich in useful, calming advice. I have no doubt that you’ll love having Erica's comforting voice guide you through this extraordinary, exciting journey.”-
Harvey Karp, MD, FAAP, author of the DVD/book, The Happiest Baby on the Block, and The Happiest Toddler on the Block

As a first time mom, this book has been so helpful for me in my first pregnancy. I prefer more holistic practices, and have really enjoyed the information that was provided in this book. It walks you through all parts of pregnancy, labor, birth, and postpartum.

I delivered at UCSF, one of the preeminent women’s hospitals in the country. The nurses, doctor, and midwife who helped with my delivery utilized MANY of the techniques described in this book. The fact that it is embraced and practiced by some of the best medical professionals in the country says a little something about the idea that the contents of this book are "woo" as a previous reviewer states.

My mother-in-law is an LVN and recently she started working in labor and delivery. She borrowed this book, some of it she had already learned but she found a lot it incredibly helpful!

This is the most approachable, easy to digest, least judgmental, and most comprehensive book out there.

It's broken down into sections to help you understand what's happening with baby, your body, AND has recipes PLUS things you may want to check off your "to-do" list... I mean she covers it all.

I made it to 6cm dilated before going to the hospital, in large part because I had the tools I needed. You won't use everything in this book, but you'll be glad to have a full toolbox.

I had pages bookmarked for newborn care and breastfeeding that my husband and I referred back to several times in the early days. The glossary in the back makes it very easy to find what you're looking for.

The images are so beautiful and very helpful, and who doesn't love a good chart?!

The staff at UCSF was so grateful for my clear birth plan (thanks to this book) and I felt so EMPOWERED during my labor.

I'm now expecting my second and am looking forward to revisiting this book.

I chose this book over all others because of the positive reviews but I also liked that it was written by a POC and I actually really ended up liking this book! Mainly that Erica walks you through every stage, included charts (i.e. what to put in your hospital delivery bag) but kept it neutral. For example, she mentions home birthing and single mothering too. I’ve read it through completely but I will be going back and following along with the current stage of my pregnancy which is why I also bought the paperback book! No regrets! I also enjoyed that she acknowledges motherhood as a completely new experience yet still encourages readers to trust your instincts. She talks about natural remedies like teas/food (with the recipes included) and reaffirms repeatedly that although many will want to offer you advice, you don’t have to take it/use it.

I really enjoyed this book. It has a lot of very practical advice on how to have a more holistic and “natural” birth. I think some of the advice (breastfeeding) is a bit outdated but still a lot of great information.

If you are already on the path to more holistic living then this may not be the right fit. A lot of the information is pretty basic, (Hypnobirthing, aroma therapy, clean eating, stretching etc).

I still enjoyed it as a more experienced “scrunchy” mom. I am keeping it on hand for reference in future pregnancies.

This book is like having a doula in your back pocket. A warm, compassionate, all-knowing friend who understands the struggles and the fear, and yet, expertly stirs you into a positive mindset. This book helps you find confidence in yourself and your decisions. It’s absolutely incredible!

I’m currently 8 months pregnant and have been reading the What To Expect book since the day I got a positive test. Although that book is full of great information, it reads like a textbook or dictionary (which can be truly great at times) but it doesn’t address you, the person, throughout pregnancy. What it lacks is the life behind the person reading. The fears, the anxiety, the questions of practices, roles, birthing environments... that’s why I bought Nurture and it’s now why I recommend it to everyone I know.

I loved the month-by-month chapters in this book that addressed different cravings and different nutritional needs (with recipes!), various (gentle) exercises for the symptoms of that month/trimester and, most importantly of all, your mental state. With exercises to help stimulate journaling or a self-discussion and awareness, plus mindfulness exercises to calm nerves and symptoms, it truly felt like having a SOLUTION. Like having a friend talking you through all those ugly moments, and sharing in every good one too.

Tons of people will tell you you can do this and you’re made for this, but nothing really captures the essence of joyful, prepared, relaxed pregnancy and labor like this book. I’m sighing deeply of relief to have found it.

Thank you, Erica!

I have nothing but great things to say about this book! I’m pregnant for the first time and through this book Erica has done an excellent job of educating me on what my body is going through/will go through. She incorporates both the science of what’s happening and will happen as well as relaxation techniques and guiding me on the spiritual journey of pregnancy.

I have been using her recipes for safe meals, smoothies, infusions and natural remedies for the nutrients my body needs and to combat symptoms I’m experiencing. She explains how the ingredients benefit your body and baby!

She also gives you safe exercises and workouts to aid your body in the different stages of pregnancy as well as preparing you for the birthing process.

I can be a high stress person and tend to read more online then I should. She gives me the information I need and packages it so nicely. I learn what I need to learn about the science and the concerns to be aware of but mostly the amazing abilities of my body and how to aid in keeping my body and mind strong while it does what it instinctively knows to do.

If I could give this book more than 5 stars I would. ❤️ Oh and did I mention I’ve only just entered the second trimester of this book! I’m so grateful to have her with me on this journey.

Wonderful book that isn’t patronizing or #girlboss or full of clichés! This book is calming, reassuring and definitely for intelligent grown ups! Only minor is that it’s more for the American public so some advice aren’t applicable to the UK. Other than that highly recommend
