Jagged Edge (The Arsenal Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 2,720 ratings

Mary “The Edge” Reynolds is the most sought-after back office operative around-the creative genius pulling the ultimate bad-asses out of impossible situations. She’s never failed on a mission, and she’s not about to fail on the most important mission ever-keeping her newly designed security system safe. Relying on others isn’t in her nature, but the newly formed Arsenal is her only hope for escape when she’s kidnapped.

She is the Edge. The Edge never breaks. Never quits.

Dylan Mason and his brothers have put everything on the line to form The Arsenal. When the paramilitary arena is rocked by Edge’s capture, he’ll do whatever it takes to get the fearless operative back, but his wary heart isn’t ready to handle the vulnerable woman buried beneath the hardened shell. Getting her back was simple. Keeping her and her “security system” HERA out of enemy hands is another story.

Together they must hunt down the faction behind her capture and subsequent torture to keep HERA from becoming an unstoppable terroristic threat. What they uncover could destroy them both.

Warning: This is a gritty story that follows the heroine through a horrifying ordeal and the recovery to her HEA. There is violence and assault which may trigger some readers.

Review

"This story had a lot of emotion. The suspense nearly killed me trying to figure out whom was the bad guys and who was good. The mystery, the suspense and romance was mind blowing and this is one story I will be reading again." ~ Meme Chanell Book Corner"Amazing....I so love how we get such strong female leads as well as the male. You don't come across many books where you get to see the females kick butt right along side the men." ~Becky, Goodreads Review"This is a superb suspense filled read with great character chemistry and an intriguing storyline. I was hooked and just enjoyed the ride." ~ Tracie, Goodreads Review"I'd say there's a nail biting conclusion to this story, but the whole thing was nail biting, and worth so much more than the 5 stars I'm limited to. I absolutely loved it and I really can't wait to read thenext one in what promises to be a seriously good series." ~ SFF Dragon, Goodreads Review"Wow.... Jagged Edge had everything that you would want in a romance; Thrill action, Suspense, and tons of romance." ~ Katherine, Goodreads Review

Immediately grabs you by the throat and doesn't let you up for air until the very end. I couldn't get enough. Cara Carnes captures a character's true essence thru n thru. Good, Bad, and the Shades in between. Jagged Edge contains it all: love, honor, deception, and intriguing plot twists you'll never see coming. With vile enemies bent on chaos, the true friends who always have your back, and strong, sexy, solid soldiers who, even when wounded, are intent on revealing the truth and dispensing much needed justice. If this doesn't give you what you need... You're too high maintenance. Unable to be satisfied.
(Cara Carnes, Thank you for sharing this awesome story, this one alone has secured me as a ForeverFan! Now! On to The Arsenal book 2!)

What's not to like or should I say love. Wished there been another chapter just to know which house and the happy every after.

I normally give up on books who introduce a lot of characters at one time. It took a while to figure everyone out and that was frustrating. However, I’m glad I stuck with it because it was a phenomenal book.

A long time fan of action and adventure, the relatively new interest in hot romance are both satisfied within the pages of this book, making me eager to move on to the next...and the next...and the next.

It has been a while since I found a new author, a female author in particular, who knew how to write paramilitary action and blend it with romance in a way that neither is overshadowed or overdone.

With more of a penchant for action in the field rather than in the bedroom, my bookshelf--real or digital--has a limited number of authors gracing them. Cara Carnes and The Arsenal are definitely added to that short list.

The Mason men are hot, sexy, and hard as nails when the time calls for it. They know how to kick take names and kick ass but also when gentleness, understanding, and even silence is needed. Their bond as brothers AND brothers in arms makes them a special breed I haven't seen since the KGI series.

She balances the brotherly BS with strict military training and discipline in such a way it's hard to tell where one stops and the other starts. The hierarchy in the family plays into a military style hierarchy smoothly, allowing all the brothers to shine in their moment without detracting from the others or the bond between them.

The action is solid, though I would like to see, from a personal preference, a little more information on the weaponry and specific moves used by these formidable men and women. Which is a another plus on the book--the women.

They are smart, smarter than the men as far as their field, though one brother has promise of fitting into their world when necessary, and there's even a female field operative as capable and respected as any man in The Arsenal. Perhaps better than most.

To see a woman who is rightly respected for her skill in the field is still somewhat rare, but Addy fills the bill nicely and I can't wait to read the story leading up to her HEA.

All of the women are strong, not a single powder puff in the lot. Most are not field worthy like Addy, but they have a strength that is obviously respected and contributes to the unit as a whole.

Brains and brawn is a timeless combination. It's nice to see it brought together with neither side being considered weak or useless with a team of men and women who compliment each other in the field and in ops.

Ready for Book 2 and all those following.

Jagged Edge was a fantastic beginning story in The Arsenal Series! Dylan Mason and his brothers (retired Special Forces) recently started a highly respected private paramilitary organization (The Arsenal).

The story opens with Mary being rescued by Dylan and The Arsenal after being brutally tortured by unknown villains. Mary "Edge" and best friend Vivian "Quillery" developed a cutting edge security program and are the most sought after operations duo for covert ops. Mary is brought to the Arsenal compound to recover from her injuries.

Mary was a strong and confident heroine when she was Edge. But she battled with PTSD from her capture as well as insecurities in being a woman outside of her job. Dylan is right there for her and tears down her walls by showing her she's a desirable female partner - perfectly matched to his protective alpha warrior and encourages her to just be Mary when she's not running an op. The smexy scenes were hot between these two! Mary also stands up for Dylan against his wicked ex and helps him repair his strained relationship with a brother.

While we are introduced to a number of characters in this first book, it is easy to follow because this is such a well written story. The backstory is essential to understand the characters and their intriguing plot lines appearing in the upcoming books.

After finishing Jagged Edge, download the free read, Moving On, from Cara's website which leads you to the next exciting book, Sight Lines.

This series is wonderfully written, filled with bada$$ heroines and heroes, taut suspense, plot twists, spicy romance, tight-knit families, ultra close friendships and HEAs! I guarantee you will devour all of these books in the Arsenal world!

5.0 out of 5 stars Jagged Edge (The Arsenal Book 1)

Love this story....finally, an author I would rank up there with Irish Winters my favourite author of all time. The arsenal series promises to be many many hours of great reading with the hero paramilitary brothers whose goal is to help people who are in desperate situations with no light at the end of the tunnel and the unplanned love the brothers find while doing what they do best as former seals. My only hope is that the stories don’t start to be written as a formula because they become boring. If Cara Carne can keep coming up with plots as twisted and exciting as the ones in Jagged Edge I will be hooked for good!

5.0 out of 5 stars Doesn't let up from the start...

I have read this book many times. There was something about it that pulled me in from the start and kept me going back to it.

Mary is a renowned back office operative working for a security organization called 'Hive', where she has been for 15 years. We pick up Mary's story after she has been kidnapped. She has been held for 4 days and over that time subjected to numerous torture methods... including drugging, water-boarding, electric shock, physical abuse and rape. It is horrendous. There is no real graphic detail, instead the author leaves it up to us to picture what we need to fill the scene. Which, for me, was completely appropriate.

She is rescued by another group known as 'The Arsenal'. It is comprised of several brothers... all ex-military of some sort.

The story then unfolds with a relationship developing between Mary 'The Edge' Reynolds and Dylan Mason and the need to find out who was behind the kidnapping.

I love this. I love this whole series. But...Just a few things that don't feel... 'finished' to me.

What happened with the operatives that Dylan et al captured when they recovered Mary. I know 2 were dead, but they had 2 alive. Mary took enough notes of who the others were... there was a scar, the ice-blue eyes... she is a genius and would've been able to trace them. Why wasn't that covered as part of her story? I know that the story is ongoing... but there really wasn't very much closure with the whole last hostage thing. I mean, it just felt a little anti-climatic. What happened with the known & captured other individuals that were at the Arsenal? Then there are a couple of continuity things... the thing with Dylan/Hailey/Dallas... Dylan recalls walking in on Hailey and Dallas in his bed... but later on it is Marshall who walks in on them and then Hailey seeks Dylan out to tell him. Then the scene with Addy and the eunuch comment... Jesse leaves the room, but Mary apologises to him saying that she knew but hadn't said anything. Addy realises her words were hurtful... and then Jesse comes back into the room... makes no sense and has bugged me every time that I have read this.

It’s potent, it’s cute, it’s packed with mystery and action!
Just my kind of book! Love how is written, the plot, the flow!
I loved it Mary/Edge and Dylan romance. It started rough, but with a foundation of steel.

Besides the couple, everyone else is a little crazy, funny and powerful too!

Really good reading!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Read

This is a new author and, of course, new series for me. Wow! Great storyline, terrific characters and well written. The details are vivid yet not too graphic, however, be warned, the story starts off in quite a realistic and unpleasant manner. Really, how things would be in the real world. Stick it out as it is worth it. Our two leads are well written and likeable and at first seem like an odd match but balance each other nicely. I can see where the thread of the storyline is headed and I am waiting with baited breath to follow along. This great author, Cara Carnes, reminds me in some ways of Elaine Levine. Both have scouring for the next installment and I feel I will be sorry when the series is finished. Great story, great read, great author!

There are triggers with this story, I would say be cautious as it contains physical and emotional trauma. The story gives you a good overview of the players. Lots of action. Some of it felt a little bit like vigilante justice.
