Jagged Edge (The Arsenal Book 1) Kindle Edition
She is the Edge. The Edge never breaks. Never quits.
Dylan Mason and his brothers have put everything on the line to form The Arsenal. When the paramilitary arena is rocked by Edge’s capture, he’ll do whatever it takes to get the fearless operative back, but his wary heart isn’t ready to handle the vulnerable woman buried beneath the hardened shell. Getting her back was simple. Keeping her and her “security system” HERA out of enemy hands is another story.
Together they must hunt down the faction behind her capture and subsequent torture to keep HERA from becoming an unstoppable terroristic threat. What they uncover could destroy them both.
Warning: This is a gritty story that follows the heroine through a horrifying ordeal and the recovery to her HEA. There is violence and assault which may trigger some readers.

About the author
Born in small-town Texas, Cara Carnes was a princess, a pirate, fashion model, actress, rock star and Jon Bon Jovi's wife all before the age of 13. In reality, her fascination for enthralling worlds took seed somewhere amidst a somewhat dull day job and a wonderful life filled with family and friends. When she's not cemented to her chair, Cara loves traveling, photography and reading.

(Cara Carnes, Thank you for sharing this awesome story, this one alone has secured me as a ForeverFan! Now! On to The Arsenal book 2!)
It has been a while since I found a new author, a female author in particular, who knew how to write paramilitary action and blend it with romance in a way that neither is overshadowed or overdone.
With more of a penchant for action in the field rather than in the bedroom, my bookshelf--real or digital--has a limited number of authors gracing them. Cara Carnes and The Arsenal are definitely added to that short list.
The Mason men are hot, sexy, and hard as nails when the time calls for it. They know how to kick take names and kick ass but also when gentleness, understanding, and even silence is needed. Their bond as brothers AND brothers in arms makes them a special breed I haven't seen since the KGI series.
She balances the brotherly BS with strict military training and discipline in such a way it's hard to tell where one stops and the other starts. The hierarchy in the family plays into a military style hierarchy smoothly, allowing all the brothers to shine in their moment without detracting from the others or the bond between them.
The action is solid, though I would like to see, from a personal preference, a little more information on the weaponry and specific moves used by these formidable men and women. Which is a another plus on the book--the women.
They are smart, smarter than the men as far as their field, though one brother has promise of fitting into their world when necessary, and there's even a female field operative as capable and respected as any man in The Arsenal. Perhaps better than most.
To see a woman who is rightly respected for her skill in the field is still somewhat rare, but Addy fills the bill nicely and I can't wait to read the story leading up to her HEA.
All of the women are strong, not a single powder puff in the lot. Most are not field worthy like Addy, but they have a strength that is obviously respected and contributes to the unit as a whole.
Brains and brawn is a timeless combination. It's nice to see it brought together with neither side being considered weak or useless with a team of men and women who compliment each other in the field and in ops.
Ready for Book 2 and all those following.
The story opens with Mary being rescued by Dylan and The Arsenal after being brutally tortured by unknown villains. Mary "Edge" and best friend Vivian "Quillery" developed a cutting edge security program and are the most sought after operations duo for covert ops. Mary is brought to the Arsenal compound to recover from her injuries.
Mary was a strong and confident heroine when she was Edge. But she battled with PTSD from her capture as well as insecurities in being a woman outside of her job. Dylan is right there for her and tears down her walls by showing her she's a desirable female partner - perfectly matched to his protective alpha warrior and encourages her to just be Mary when she's not running an op. The smexy scenes were hot between these two! Mary also stands up for Dylan against his wicked ex and helps him repair his strained relationship with a brother.
While we are introduced to a number of characters in this first book, it is easy to follow because this is such a well written story. The backstory is essential to understand the characters and their intriguing plot lines appearing in the upcoming books.
After finishing Jagged Edge, download the free read, Moving On, from Cara's website which leads you to the next exciting book, Sight Lines.
This series is wonderfully written, filled with bada$$ heroines and heroes, taut suspense, plot twists, spicy romance, tight-knit families, ultra close friendships and HEAs! I guarantee you will devour all of these books in the Arsenal world!

Mary is a renowned back office operative working for a security organization called 'Hive', where she has been for 15 years. We pick up Mary's story after she has been kidnapped. She has been held for 4 days and over that time subjected to numerous torture methods... including drugging, water-boarding, electric shock, physical abuse and rape. It is horrendous. There is no real graphic detail, instead the author leaves it up to us to picture what we need to fill the scene. Which, for me, was completely appropriate.
She is rescued by another group known as 'The Arsenal'. It is comprised of several brothers... all ex-military of some sort.
The story then unfolds with a relationship developing between Mary 'The Edge' Reynolds and Dylan Mason and the need to find out who was behind the kidnapping.
I love this. I love this whole series. But...Just a few things that don't feel... 'finished' to me.
What happened with the operatives that Dylan et al captured when they recovered Mary. I know 2 were dead, but they had 2 alive. Mary took enough notes of who the others were... there was a scar, the ice-blue eyes... she is a genius and would've been able to trace them. Why wasn't that covered as part of her story? I know that the story is ongoing... but there really wasn't very much closure with the whole last hostage thing. I mean, it just felt a little anti-climatic. What happened with the known & captured other individuals that were at the Arsenal? Then there are a couple of continuity things... the thing with Dylan/Hailey/Dallas... Dylan recalls walking in on Hailey and Dallas in his bed... but later on it is Marshall who walks in on them and then Hailey seeks Dylan out to tell him. Then the scene with Addy and the eunuch comment... Jesse leaves the room, but Mary apologises to him saying that she knew but hadn't said anything. Addy realises her words were hurtful... and then Jesse comes back into the room... makes no sense and has bugged me every time that I have read this.
Just my kind of book! Love how is written, the plot, the flow!
I loved it Mary/Edge and Dylan romance. It started rough, but with a foundation of steel.
Besides the couple, everyone else is a little crazy, funny and powerful too!
Really good reading!
