Dragon Storm (Heritage of Power Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 4,130 ratings

Born with a secret power he must hide…

Telryn “Trip” Yert has always been a little odd, with hunches that are too accurate to explain. Magic is feared and forbidden in Iskandia, so he’s struggled his whole life to hide his eccentricities. As a boy, he was forced to watch his mother’s execution. Her crime? Witchcraft.

Understandably, Trip wants nothing to do with the power that lurks within him, always threatening to reveal itself. Instead, he dedicates himself to serving as an officer in the king’s army, to battling pirates and imperial conquerors. He longs to become a soldier as respected and renowned as the legendary General Zirkander.

But his country is in need of more than a soldier.

After disappearing for over a thousand years, dragons have returned to the world. A few of them are willing to be allies to mankind, as they were millennia before, but far more want to destroy or enslave humans and claim the world for themselves.

There are few people left with the power to fight dragons. For reasons he doesn’t understand, Trip may be one of those people. But if he chooses to learn more about his heritage and the power he can wield, he risks losing everyone he loves and everything he longs to be.

First in a new series, Heritage of Power, which is a wonderful fantasy adventure, with sorcerers, magical soulblades and pilots fighting against marauding dragons. Trip is a pilot with magical skills that he’s just learning about and trying to keep a secret, since magic and “witches” are feared and reviled in Iskandia. Rysha is a young noble born lieutenant chosen to accompany several pilots, including Trip, as well as other officers on a mission to close a portal that is allowing dragons to enter their world once more, after centuries of their banishment. Trip is chosen to carry a soulblade named Jaxi during the mission, a sarcastic, bossy, intrusive voice in his head, that also wields great power that will assist them all. This is the first in a new fantasy series, that has the author’s usual humor, action, wonderful characters and fantastic world building which I have enjoyed in all of her previous work that I’ve read. This world was originally described in the Dragon Blood series, which I still need to catch up on, but you can read this new series without having read that one first.

I'm writing the review late, meaning, I purchased the book in February and have since completed the first 4 and am almost finished with the fifth. I found the book enjoyable as I started with a sample and purchased. In the interest of full disclosure, I did not realize there was a series before this one (I picked up the first three books after starting this one). Despite not having read the prior series I was easily able to follow the storyline.

I found the characters engaging, though I will admit some of the juvenile behavior such as the sex jokes can be trying as the series goes along. My only complaint with the first book is that the premise of the story is not resolved until the end of the second book. While I don't have an issue with the cliffhanger, this author sometimes finishes a storyline in one book or waits until the second book. Personally, I had already downloaded the second book (Kindle Lending Library), so it wasn't too much of a big deal for me.

I'm giving this 4 stars (a high rating for me) because this independent author spent some quality time on spelling and grammar. I do not recall any issues in that department, which is a big plus when I am reading a book. There is nothing worse than having to reread a sentence because of poor grammar.

This series follows the soul-blade series. The characters are wonderful. The plot is twisty. The world building is fantastic. The book ends on a bit of a cliffhanger, so have the next book cued up before reading.

I enjoyed this book from the start. It was a great book as a prequel. There are a lot of twists in it that get you intersted through out the story. I can't wait to start the next in the series. Some readers found it like fantasy like but I guess it is as its about fighting dragons. So not sure the confusion on the felt. but I truely enjoyed reading this book.

A very good book! The start of a series, that definitely does end one nought of a cliffhanger to count as one, so if you object to that, be warned. Thought the next two books are available so it is fairly easy to find out how THIS one is resolved.

Anyway, as I expect from this author, a very fun and exciting read. I do enjoy her books in this universe and her other fantasy universe (emperor's edge). This is written as a great entry point into this universe as well. There are many stories that come before, but you do not need any of them to happily read this, and I believe you will be caught up in a fun new world within a chapter or two!

If you have read other books of her's set in this universe, her quality is most definitely up to par and you will find many familiar much loved characters appearing and being their normal amusing selfs, even if they are not the main focus.

In conclusion, I enjoyed this book. I think you might too if you enjoy fantasy.

Dragon Storm (Heritage of Power Book 1) by Lindsay Buroker
Buroker is impressively prolific! I have not read a single one of her books that I didn’t enjoy. This book was no exception. Young pilot meets young warrior scholar or scholar warrior and sparks well spark. They are part of a B team sent to recover magic hating swords created by magic to battle predatory dragons.
Buroker does character interplay very well. She shows the emotions and allows the reader to experience them. She explores prejudice and acceptance, class clashes and loyalty. Her inanimate objects have plenty of personality.
I really enjoyed the book and look forward to the rest of the series.

I enjoyed much of this book, although it sucks flow at times. Some of the characters are quite interesting, but only two are significantly developed. Most of the characters are essentially introduced, but not much more than that. Despite that flaw, the story line is interesting and creative. It offers a great deal of potential for future books in the series. Overall, well worth reading and enjoyable. I look forward to the next book to find out if the author continues to expand several of the characters and develops new ones as well. Hopefully, future books will be more mature as well. The potential for adult characters is obvious, but only hinted at.

Overall, enjoyable, creative and potentially promising.

I am so happy that Ms Buroker has returned to writing fantasy. Clearly, it is her favorite and the writing is soooooo much better for it. Back is the witty repartee, the snarkiness and the just plain fun comments. Her SF books have some of this but it really shines in her fantasy books. This is the kind of writing that caused me to fall in love with Ms. Buroker, errrrr fall in love with her writing and I have missed it in her SF books. This is a happy book, even during the bad scenes, and you can feel it on every page.
If you want a great story and an entertaining time, read this book. Great fun

Dragon Storm starts a few years later than Oaths, the last book in the Dragon Blood series and it's a fantastic start to the sequel series.
I love the new charachters and love that some of the old charachters of the Dragon Blood series are in it too. It's written in the same fluent, engaging style and it's a great start of the series!

5.0 out of 5 stars Witzige Dialoge, sympathische Hauptfiguren, actionreiche Handlung!

If you have read any of the Dragon Blood series then you probably enjoy reading well-written stories about magic and adventure with humour and a light-hearted aura of joy and delight. I expected this book to be good but it exceeded my expectations and I can hardly wait for book 2. In fact, I slowed my reading down to extend the pleasure for as long as I could. I
I can pretty much guarantee that this book will put you in a good mood and tickle your fancy. There is budding romance too, but as with all the Dragon Blood books, no bodice-ripping so you could recommend this book to your granny or, as in my case, your son, without embarrassment. Altogether a great read.
