Overlook: A Story About Drugs, Disappointment and The American Dream Kindle Edition

4.8 4.8 out of 5 stars 396 ratings

Overlook is the story of five dysfunctional neighbors, denizens of a blue-collar community whose lives become entangled around the "missing" son of a local dry-cleaning magnate.

Can an elderly sex-offender, an abusive veteran, a troubled teenage boy, a girl who sells pain pills, and a listless, bumbling stoner band together against the external forces that threaten their quietly broken lives?

No. Definitely not.

And so sex, betrayal, death—even masturbation ensue, changing life for those on Overlook Road forever.

Very well written, seamless execution

Very well written, seamless execution
I would describe the writing style as deriving the best writing characteristics from the likes of Stephen King, Dean Koontz, and Fyodor Dostersky. Mr. McCusker gives arduous detail, while churning the story forward in a natural way. I look forward to seeing more work from this author.

THE DAWG CAME IN WITH THE HEAT ON THIS ONE. Overlook is a captivating and thought-provoking novel that kept me engrossed from start to finish. Matt Mccusker's storytelling is masterful, weaving together a rich tapestry of characters and events that kept me eagerly turning the pages. The characters are well-developed and relatable, each with their own struggles and motivations. I found myself rooting for them, hoping they would find the peace and redemption they sought.

Overall, "Overlook" is a must-read for fans of literary fiction especially if you're a true Mccusky fan. It's a hauntingly beautiful story that lingers in the mind long after the final page is turned. Highly recommended.

A turbulent glance into the often poetic grime of urban America, oppressive regret, embattled families and uncertain youth. Matt does not disappoint. Pause.

I am familiar with the author from his podcast, but was not sure what to expect from his book. I was blown away by how seamless the story flows and he easily transitions from one character narrating to another. The characters are relatable and refreshingly upfront and honest in who they are and what motivates them. I sincerely hope Matt McCusker continues to write.

Pretty solid little thriller. I thought it was going to be something closer to a memoir, but it ended up feeling like a Guy Ritchie movie. Reminded me a lot of The Drop by Dennis Lehane.

I really enjoyed this book and how it was written. Some of the best descriptions that were so uncanny but also so familiar, really a testament to a good writer. I hope Mccusker writes more books.

It's been so long since I've read characters that seem like real people I have known -Not so much the evil hippies, but that's because I have never really known any evil hippies. I've been in relationships with women like Brenda. Lot's of drama involved but reminds me that I loved them. I even felt jealous when she was considering other dudes like I used to with them lol. Joel is similar to myself and other guys I knew in my 20s. Right down to completely dismissing quite useful advice from my Dad and having a head full of all sorts of irrelevant, meta knowledge while their own life is disrepair - Like spending time writing reviews no one is going to read.
Since ideology has infected everything I'd pretty much given up on seeing any truth in fiction (I'm aware of the irony) literature or film or culture. If I want to hear any kind of truth and an accurate representation of people other than slanted to favour woke feminist progressive party line it will be on a podcast or elsewhere. That is often a crazy, polarising world to live in and is unfortunate. I grew up reading Hubert Selby Jr and other fly on the wall literature. Along those lines, I've seen reviews, somewhat true about grammar issues here and there. It's minimal, less than some of the too many self-help books I've read and seeing as I bought this for the price of a coffee, not much to complain about.
Thanks for writing relatable, human, messed up, funny people and a fine story.
