Lab 5: Map Maker

In this lab, learn how to find north with a couple of sticks, and navigate back home in Minecraft.

Family Activity: Finding North

It’s instinctual to want to know where we are in the world. Our devices know where we are using not only global positioning satellites (GPS) but also cell towers and Wi-Fi hotspots to approximate our location—but what happens when the battery runs out? Complete this lab and you’ll always know how to find north, south, east, and west using a couple of easily gathered items.

  • Two 1-yard (1 m) sticks
  • 2 rocks
  • Game Mode Creative

Family Activity: Finding North | Approximate Time To Complete 1 Hour

Fig. 1:

The first vertical stick should cast a long shadow. Use the first rock to mark the end of the shadow. This first rock will become the westerly point.

Fig. 2:

Place the second rock to mark the easterly shadow point.

Fig. 3:

Place the second stick across the two rocks. We are connecting the westerly rock with the easterly rock.

Fig. 4:

To make it easier to see north, draw a perpendicular line that intersects the stick lying across the front of the two rocks.

Minecraft Play: Map Maker | Approximate Time To Complete 45 Minutes

Fig. 1:

With the Sun setting in the west, you can see that sunflowers always face east. The Sun rises in the east and sets in the west.

Fig. 2:

On PC Minecraft only, you can use the debug screen to find your coordinates. The colored cursor in the middle of the screen tells you which direction you’re headed in.

Fig. 3:

Craft a zoomed-out map by placing a map in the center of your crafting table, surrounded by paper.

Fig. 4:

Finding a cartographer villager isn’t easy. You’ll have to keep an eye out at every village you encounter. Some villagers that wear white are librarians, not cartographers.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Perfect for memorable family nights or sensational classroom fun, guided quests and labs encourage creative thinking and collaborative communication with dozens of activities designed to engage children, teens, and adults, both on- and offline.―Foreword Reviews, starred review

One of the main things that I like about this book is that each of the six chapters begins with an activity that is completed without the use of a digital device. Next come related activities in the creative mode of Minecraft. [...] Recommended.―
School Library Connection

This is a great book for encouraging Minecraft-obsessed kids to try something different in the game and getting them involved in STEM in the real-world too.―
GeekMom

The book is simply amazing, and teachers will find a chart in the back of the book with how each project relates to Classroom Standards. But parents and camp instructors (like me) are going to find this book an invaluable resource for using
Minecraft to teach (or sneak in) some real-world projects and hands-on activities.―GeekDad

This is so cool! This [book has] hands on activities (not touching the screen) to make science connections to
Minecraft.―Teacher Tech with Alice Keeler

If you have multiple Minecraft lovers in your household, it should be able to withstand several read-throughs.―
Christ Centered Gamer

This book is amazing on so many levels. It really knows how to draw the kids into it and capture their interest. The book walks the reader through fascinating labs that you can do in
Minecraft, thereby utilizing the computerized world as an educational platform. But, then it also has really cool labs to do in the real world.―KellysThoughtsOnThings.com

We are a homeschooling family and I wanted to add something to our Fun Fridays, this has been a big hit!

I don’t know a lot about Minecraft but my daughter is into it so I try to stay in touch with her interests and I’m able to tie each activity into our homeschool unit studies and help her create a build related to what we are studying. We did a Ben Franklin unit study, built a battery then she did the Minecraft built. It was neat.

This manual helps with aiding in the teaching of Science, using a new way of helping the kids absorb. While the STEM system is not new, this book shows with 48 projects just how computer games and education can be combined. If you have not seen this series, you are in a for a treat.

The author's still observe some basics. They encourage the use of a journal. Using the popularity of the video game Minecraft, users can gain scientific knowledge. Making fun things like glow in the dark items to fireworks. I loved the lab that was able to be crafted.

Harness the widely enjoyed video game to bring education to students. This is such a great idea, and a very usable concept. I was actually excited and at the end, hoping for more projects. Maybe there will be a volume 2?

We bought the first Minecraft Lab book for our girls, and they loved it! So, we had to try this one, too. It was just as fabulous, with fun family activities mixed in with Minecraft-based learning. Can't recommend this enough for learning fun!

I thought it would be more of a kit with supplies. It was just a book.

We bought this for our 11 year old grandson. It wasn't clear on the description that it was only a book. The title was confusing as it made us think there were projects and pieces for the projects included in a kit.
