The Island Kindle Edition

4.9 4.9 out of 5 stars 29 ratings

Agent Sherard Parker never expected to get caught.

His first reconnaissance mission with the DEA was supposed to be simple: infiltrate a small South Pacific island and gather intelligence about its involvement in the international drug trade.

But when Parker stumbles upon a hidden airliner reportedly shot down weeks earlier—an act of terrorism that sparked a war—he realizes the island is more than just home to a major drug operation, it's also part of a conspiracy so evil it could lead to World War III.

After being captured, Parker is forced to abandon his original mission for a far more important one: escape from the island and return to his family.

Can Parker lead an eclectic band of prisoners in a daring life-or-death escape from their tropical prison, or will those in charge of protecting the island prevail, keeping its dark secrets forever?

A well-crafted story that reveals how much we don’t know and what we do know may not be all that true. J.L Pattison does it again by pulling you into a story that feels all too familiar and uncomfortable in the truth it quietly shouts. If you want to give your brain a spin, dig into this story and don’t let the questions stop as soon as you finish reading it. This story is a good reminder to ask the questions everyone is avoiding and not be afraid to speak the truth, whether anyone wants to hear it or not. Fantastic, once again!

In his third outing as an author, J.L. Pattison stepped to the plate and completely hit a grand slam right out of the park with this book.

Some people should never become published because their writing is terrible, the editing is a shambles, and the plots unrecognizable. However, none of these facets of writing apply to “The Island.” The amount of time that this book has been in the making shows the level to which Pattison has taken his writing skills. This is an award-winning author that will continue to hit new heights.

“The Island” is concise in every page as it weaves suspense into a story that reads like the front page of today’s newspaper. The events that transpire, and the characters themselves, will evoke a wide array of emotions. You will go from the lows of anger and feelings of betrayal on one page only to be thrilled at the action that takes place a few pages later. You will be left breathless at the unexpected conclusion and you may laugh and cry with the various characters.

In a world of subterfuge and hidden agendas, Pattison wrote with the intention of warning his readers of a reality that is scary. Plots, sub-plots, and ingenious twists fill the pages of this novella and want you craving a much larger story. However, he gets the point across and what you choose to do with the story of Sherard Parker will be left up to you, but you cannot ignore the facts presented.

Pattison does an excellent job writing in a way that leaves no doubt that he has done his research. This speculative fiction is not for the faint of heart. “The Island” is readable by most age levels, and parents will not have to worry if the pages are filled with crudeness, vulgarity, or even sex scenes as there are none of the above.

Pulling no punches, “The Island” is a book that needs to be read and the warnings heeded. The Spanish-American philosopher, poet, and humanist George Santayana noted in his famous quote, “Those who do not learn from the past are doomed to repeat it.” Western Civilization is repeating history at an alarming rate, and truly we are doomed if we do not remember why a book like “The Island” had to be written.

Many novels start out like a tortoise at a starting line, as authors slowly work through bland but necessary exposition (and often extraneous character development), but J.L. Pattison’s newest contribution to the “Christian suspense meets ‘Twilight Zone’” genre starts off with a “bang” and manages to stay there for the remainder of the book. Generally, military novels are not to my liking, but I found the story’s pacing was so sure-footed, it deftly maneuvered through any potential “backstory boredom.” More importantly, the “What If” scenario the book jacket hinted at was just too intriguing, and I decided not to bypass a novel whose subject matter is not usually something I can fully appreciate.

“The Island” is a great addition to modern Christian fiction; it’s a perfect blend of truth and preaching, and Pattison manages to skillfully and cleverly weave a story throughout that always keeps the plot front and center. Sympathetic characters and a conspiracy theory highlight the narrative, and while that same conspiracy theory—which some might say is unbelievable at worse, outlandish at best—is truly far too frightening a possibility. From the beginning I never found myself doubting the fiction that propelled the events and the characters into a shocking yet satisfying ending.

So read “The Island” for the story; just make sure you let the biblical gospel and precepts stay with you for a long time. Very much recommend this book.

It’s an unsettling thought that those who write the history determine the future. This book caused me to rethink at least a half a dozen preconceive notions I have had about my view on governmental issues. No, I’m not wearing a tin foil hat, but I am now better armed to view things through lenses that have less of a rose colored shade that I have in the past.

Thank you Pattison for once again opening my eyes a little further.

With the recent disappearance of another flight in Indonesia, this book is a timely read. This book was recommended to me and I had never read anything by the author and didn't know what to expect. I can honestly say that I thoroughly enjoyed the book and would recommend it to others. For an author who might not like puzzles, he sure presents an interesting one here. The book follows a group of 3 DEA agents infiltrating an island in the South Pacific looking to confirm the source of illegal narcotics entry into the US. I can't say too much else about the plot without giving things away, but it deals with the history of the drug trade in the US, plane disappearances, confusion between US government departments, etc. The book has a very unique plot that is unlike anything I ever read and I enjoyed it. I can honestly say, it isn't often the plot of a book surprises me but this one did. Although the ending was perhaps a bit expected. The reason for the 4 stars is really because I wish the book was longer with even more details. That being said, I still recommend checking this book out
