I enjoyed this emotional story that is a roller-coaster of ups and downs in the lives of the two main characters, Connor Norris and Dani Winthrop. For each of them, life has dealt a nasty hand, and it is all about attitude and where they go in spite of everything.

Dani Winthrop is pregnant and alone. Abandoned as a child by her parents, raised in foster care, and on her own, but coping. She was involved with a man Marc, but when she discovers she is pregnant, he wants nothing to do with her or a baby. Leaving Denver, she will be hired at a temporary construction site as the secretary in Carson Creek, Colorado.

Connor Norris is a man who is existing and has run away from his past and the constant pain surrounding the death of his wife, Catherine, and their son, Sammy. He sold his home and hasn’t returned to his hometown of Fort Collins, not even to see his parents. He just travels from one construction site to the next.

The plot will have Connor’s older partner, Mick, hiring Dani as their new secretary and it comes with much animosity from Connor. He doesn’t want a woman on the construction site and does his best to run her off, but Dani is tough, she needs this job, and the pay before her baby is born. No matter how many obstacles he throws in her way, she proves to be an asset to their business, straightening up the mess the last person left, finding billing discrepancies, and making the office run smoothly.

There is so much angst between Connor and Dani, and no matter how much he tries to discourage her from staying, she proves to have just as much push to prove she can handle the work, and his nasty attitude. She isn’t flighty or flirty with the men; she whips the office in shape and minds her own business. The only problem is, she makes Connor feel alive again, and that can’t happen, or can it?

While Connor is trying to “hold on to every precious moment,” regarding his late wife and child, Dani only knows of a “childhood that was bleak and loveless.” “Yet, they’d both ended up in the same place, running from the blows that life had dealt.” “How would two such distrustful people ever find a common bond?” “Was he like her, too hurt and battered by life to venture forth again?”

In spite of what each of them had told themselves, to not trust someone or care for someone again, there is an attraction between them. It seems that for every step forward, they go back two steps.

“For a moment, just the tiniest moment, she wished something wonderful could develop. Wished they were two different people and could meet, fall in love and trust that the future would be perfect.”

“Neither of us can change the past, but we have to go on. There’s no avoiding life—fears, pain, loss and all. But there’s all that joy that also comes along with living. You bring me an abundant measure of that.”

Two people brought together at a construction work site, where neither one was looking for someone to love, yet, fate had a different plan for Connor and Dani. Over the time they are together working, a friendship is being forged and bitterness and pain of the past healed.

The story is a clean, contemporary second chance romance. There are times that words said in anger are so painful, you cringe, but in the end, healing and new beginnings are mending two broken lives for a happily ever after future. “Hold on to every precious moment.

The story of Dani, a woman who knows her mind and has the backbone to stick to her plan of cementing her permanent place in a temporary job so that she will be able to provide a secure life for the baby she is going to have but falls for the man who has closed off his heart. Will Conner be able to help out but keep his distance? Will Dani soften his heart and lead him to the life she wants them to have?
Barbara has a way of writing that takes you deep into the story and you live the story with her. This is a book that flows and is a fast and easy read without all of the words that other authors don't need.

I was send a copy of the book for a honest review.

Such a sweet story, your heart weeps for the past both Dani and Connor have struggled through. Although they both have tragic pasts, these have left them with very different outlooks on life and their futures.
Dani is sweet, cheerful, loving and always looking for the best in people, but being burnt in the past has left wary of trusting her instincts. She is determined to provide a secure future for both her and her baby and nobody is going to stand in the way or threaten this which is exactly what Connor does when he dismisses her as unsuitable for the job. Her spine of steel kicks in and she is determined to not only prove herself more than competent for the job but also make it so they cannot survive without her.....in the office of course, only the office, as she is off men...forever!
Connor is harsh, abrupt, opinionated, judgemental and running, running from his heart breaking past, running from anything resembling a future that will threaten the solitary future he believes he deserves.
Can Mick's loving interference change the future for Dani and Connor? Can he help them see that they need each other? That they can both have a happy, loving future...together.
I enjoyed this book and whilst Connor was harsh at times, you could see his instant regret and the guilt he was fighting - which only made him more endearing and had you wishing for them and the future they both deserve.
I also liked Mick and it would be lovely to see him get his own book at some point in the future, seeing him brought to his knees after all his antics with Dani and Connor!
I was sent a copy of this book for review, the views here are entirely my own.

I loved this story! Dani is six months pregnant and the father of her baby is not in the picture. She accepts a position as a secretary for a construction company that is building a resort way out in the boonies. She takes the job because the job pays well and she needs to earn as much money as she can before the baby arrives.

Dani proves to be an invaluable asset to the construction company. Connor can not afford to let her go as he originally planned. I loved to read the inner turmoil swirling around in Connor's head. He tried so hard to fight his attraction to Dani. It was pure joy to watch as the walls around his heart came tumbling down.

The characters are what make the story.

Dani Winthrop is given a job at a construction site by Mick Flanagan. When Conner Norris sees that their new secretary is a girl he wants her to leave. Can't understand why his partner has hired a 6 month pregnant girl to work 30 miles from the town. Dani really needs this job so she has her work cutout to prove herself to Connor. Barbara has written a wonderful emotional story. Her characters are strongly written and believable. I couldn't put the book down.
I know you will really love it.

After a tragic loss, Conner vowed to never fall in love again. Dani just couldn't catch a break. She's pregnant and always sunny. They make an unusual pair. Then they fall in love. This was a well written story.
