Die Noon (Goodnight Mysteries Series Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.2 4.2 out of 5 stars 4,853 ratings

Matilda Dare can’t sleep. Her insomnia is one more reason to move to the quirky small town of Goodnight, New Mexico after she inherits a house, a small newspaper, and two old dogs there. But despite the Goodnight name, Matilda still spends hers wide awake, and she has good reason after a reporter is murdered. With a mystery to solve, she begins to investigate the town and uncovers more suspects than she knows what to do with.

Meanwhile, the hottie cowboy sheriff is doing his own investigation into Matilda, and the mysterious, handsome stranger, who just happens to live with her, is showing up in all the wrong places. As her investigation continues, danger increases, and it might end up spelling lights out for Matilda.

Die Noon is the first installment in the hilarious, romantic Goodnight Mysteries series and a spinoff of the Matchmaker Mysteries.

Goodnight… Sometimes sweet dreams end in murder.

Die Noon is an easy read. Quick paced with a little humor thrown in. Typical plot but I enjoyed the read. A good summer beach book!

I know funny, and this book was hilarious. I'm dying to know how one person can squeeze so much crazy into one book. If you haven't guessed, I really enjoyed this one. The story and characters were intriguing and engaging. I'm really looking forward to reading more of this series. This book is definitely worth reading.

Die Noon, the first book in the Goodnight Mysteries by Elise Sax is a hilarious cozy mystery placed in the southwest. While much of the humor is zany, it is all fun, but the murder plot is serious. Matilda Dare had become a lightening rod for disaster even before she inherited her uncle's home and small town newspaper. Her earlier misadventures, recounted in An Affair to Dismember the first book in the Match Maker series featuring Gladie Burger, gave her plenty of reason to leave California for her new home in Goodnight. Goodnight is best known for what happened to Daisy the Giraffe and for invasion by space aliens.
When one of her employees dies right before her eyes, Matilda feels compelled to find the culprit. Silly human can be a turn-off but Elise Sax hits just the right note to keep me laughing with great characters and a good mystery.

I decided to read this one because the first one was funny and entertaining. This book just wasn't as good; not even close. The same theme from An Affair to Dismember - woman making a new start, pursued romantically by 2 men, one a cop and the other mysterious - is the same theme in this book. The difference is it was fresh in Affair, but seems stale in Die Noon. The writing was a little sloppy this time, too. It's not bad, but it's definitely at the lower end of romantic/mystery/women's pulp fiction. Easy read by the pool, at the beach, on vacation, or if you just need an escape. Just don't go into it with high expectations or looking for intellectual mystery; it's not that kind of book.

Loved every minute of it. The story was strong and captivating. The characters were believable and interesting. At times it made me anxious but that’s because I
Am ADHD and so was Matilda.

Matilda has moved to Goodnight, New Mexico, the new owner of a large house. Then being informed it also was the Gazette newspaper, which has never made a profit. The paper was an albatross, could she learn what to do in being a reporter. A dead reporter and learning how to investigate, along with the sheriff who is investigating her. The quirky people in this town add to the story. Her books are fun to read.

Goodnight, New Mexico. A town with UFO sighting by the entire populace. A town that hung a Giraffe named Daisy in the 1880's after she killed a handler. The town where Matilda Dare has inherited a house and a newspaper business. The same Matilda Dare who was committed to a rubber room by her husband after he killed and dismembered into tiny pieces his neighbor and got Matilda committed???

When Matilda arrives in Goodnight, her reputation has preceded her only it is the most convoluted miscounting of information that even Matilda tries to quit correcting people and tell them she has lived there for 30 years.

Between a murder of one of 4 other newspaper employees and attempted murder of the lead reporter, necessity makes Matilda improve rapidly as the newest member of the staff. If only she wasn't distracted by the hunky sheriff or a hunky tenant, or the boobs on the man at the swimming pool, or the bruised and bloodied girl who appears in the woods behind her building and disappears as quickly, or...

I decided to try this book not really knowing any of this, and boy am I glad I gave it a chance! The author has written hilarious characters, over the top situations, and a darn good mystery. I didn't want to put down, and when it was finished I immediately ordered the next book in the series. It was that good! Take a chance and check it out for yourself. A fun book and more to come! Nice. 😁

When I hear or read something funny I laugh. But this book had me laughing almost hysterically and one of the funniest books I have ever read. If Elise decides to give up writing books, she can most definitely take up being a stand up comic or a writer for one. The book is about Matilda who while dealing with her soon to be ex-husband learns she inherited a house and newspaper from a relative. Almost from the beginning, things start happening in Goodnight, New Mexico. Matilda begins learning how to write newspaper articles from her three employees when one of them dies with more than a few potential suspects. Throughout the story, whenever Matilda meets someone new, the person makes an off the wall comment about her being a such and such person. Matilda has a tendency to get nervous in certain situations and her banter and actions are also very funny. The story is wrapped up in the end with one remaining mystery not solved which the author tells us upfront, but you won’t know which one it is until the epilogue. If you want a good mystery with lots of humor, I highly recommend this book.

So happy to have discovered this book and author through the Fussy Librarian recommendations.

First things first - I found exactly 5 editing/proofreading errors in this book, which is nothing when you see other self-published works. So, well done on that. And allow me to point out that 15 YO Jack's last name has changed in Part V without explanation.

Now, for the main content - I loved the writing style, it made me laugh so many times! I enjoyed the main character Ms. Dare and her clumsy recent past. While there are loads of unresolved questions as the book ends, I am glad that the author hasn't tackled them all already, because the book was happening already. And besides, it would be nice to have these slowly covered in the subsequent books. The author has definitely whetted my appetite for more.

The foundation has been laid very well to develop more storylines, spin-offs and the characters themselves. Can't wait to read more in the series, as well as check out others by the author.

Matilda Dare inherited a house in Goodnight a small crazy town in New Mexico. The story has aliens, attempted murders, fish pedicures, and handsome men all besotted with Matilda. What's not to like? If the town doesn't exist I wish it did. This book really lifted my mood but I was sad that it ended without solving the biggest mystery. I,ll be happy to read more in the series.
