They Tore Out My Heart and Stomped That Sucker Flat Kindle Edition

4.7 4.7 out of 5 stars 226 ratings

They Tore Out My Heart and Stomped That Sucker Flat, first published in 1982, has sold more than 100,000 copies. Without skipping a beat, one of America's favorite humorists, the late Lewis Grizzard, tells of the early stirrings of his wayward heart in the backseat of a '57 Chevy and the ominous murmurings that led him at age thirty-five to major surgery and the real answer to his question, "How much is this going to hurt?" In the process, he discovers all the ways a heart can break. Young love. Three marriages. His father's death. And why his entire future suddenly depended on a little pig. He tells the truth—the whole truth—the kind that has readers laughing through their tears. United Press International said, "It makes you feel good to know a person can face the tubes, wires, knives, and needles of major heart surgery and make you laugh about it—hilarious!"

This is the first Lewis Grizzard book I've read and if the rest of them are anything like this, I'm game. The man's writing is smooth and concise. He doesn't need to stretch for the joke; it just comes easy, like stories told while sitting on the porch on a warm summer night. How someone can describe heart surgery in such detail and find humor in it is miraculous. The balance between his emotions brings it out in sweet, understated tones.

I liked the writing and the great and funny stories. It is too bad that he died so soon.

I don’t think you have to be from the South to find this funny but you DO have to possess a sense of humor. I have always been a fan of Lewis Grizzard’s books. Don’t get me wrong, there are some sad bits too but you just might love the funny bits a whole lot more! I am rereading a few now.

A friend loaned me his hard back copy, as I was in the queue for open heart surgery. I have never laughed so hard at what I was fearful of my upcoming surgery. This book got me past dreading it so I ordered this copy to give to my heart surgeon the day before surgery.

Terrific book. Lewis has a very humorous way of telling about his heart surgery and if you have had heart surgery you know that he has "been there". I pass a copy on to any friend that has had heart surgery to enjoy.

Lewis Grizzard is timeless! His insight is valid in today's world. He predicted todays events in many ways!

This book was bought for a friend who had just gone through open heart surgery. He was very happy to receive the book. My husband had already read the book when he had his heart attack years ago. He loved the book.
