4.7 4.7 out of 5 stars 7,724 ratings

The instant #1 New York Times and USA Today best seller by Karen Kilgariff and Georgia Hardstark, the voices behind the hit podcast My Favorite Murder!

Sharing never-before-heard stories ranging from their struggles with depression, eating disorders, and addiction, Karen and Georgia irreverently recount their biggest mistakes and deepest fears, reflecting on the formative life events that shaped them into two of the most followed voices in the nation.

In
Stay Sexy & Don’t Get Murdered, Karen and Georgia focus on the importance of self-advocating and valuing personal safety over being ‘nice’ or ‘helpful.’ They delve into their own pasts, true crime stories, and beyond to discuss meaningful cultural and societal issues with fierce empathy and unapologetic frankness.

“In many respects,
Stay Sexy & Don’t Get Murdered distills the My Favorite Murder podcast into its most essential elements: Georgia and Karen. They lay themselves bare on the page, in all of their neuroses, triumphs, failures, and struggles. From eating disorders to substance abuse and kleptomania to the wonders of therapy, Kilgariff and Hardstark recount their lives with honesty, humor, and compassion, offering their best unqualified life-advice along the way.” —Entertainment Weekly

“Like the podcast, the book offers funny, feminist advice for survival—both in the sense of not getting killed and just, like, getting a job and working through your personal shit so you can pay your bills and have friends.” —Rolling Stone

Praise for Stay Sexy & Don't Get Murdered:

"Karen Kilgariff and Georgia Hardstark share practical wisdom in “Stay Sexy and Don’t Get Murdered,” which is a No. 1 debut on our advice, how-to and miscellaneous best-seller list."―
The New York Times

"Hardstark and Kilgariff’s podcast takes on crime, death and other gory subjects, all filtered through the pair’s subversive wit as they riff on life’s craziness, often sharing details from their own mental health and substance abuse struggles. This openness translates onto the page. A kind of life guide...the book is just as funny as the podcast but often goes deeper into painful subjects." ―
Los Angeles Times

“All the best advice your mother never told you.” ―Jenny Lawson, #1
New York Times bestselling author of Furiously Happy

“Kilgariff and Hardstark bring a much needed dimension to our current, true crime fever dream―an empathetic, slangy dose of acidic humor, weary compassion, and nervous hope. Their podcast is a joy to listen to and this book captures its energy and hilarity perfectly.” ―Patton Oswalt,
New York Times bestselling author of Silver Screen Fiend

“In addition to being laugh-out-loud funny, smart, and incisive,
Stay Sexy & Don’t Get Murdered is so interesting and insightful that it made me a) want to be best friends with the authors and b) for real ask them to take me on as a therapy patient. This book is hilarious, honest, insightful, and clever as hell. Do yourself a fun favor by buying it and consuming it. You’ll emerge at the final word as a new-and-improved badass version of your former self.” ―Megan Mullally, New York Times bestselling co-author of The Greatest Love Story Ever Told

“It’s like an afternoon coffee date with your best friend that spills late into the night―where you share your darkest secrets and hardest-earned advice, and then emerge back into the world fully recharged. And ready to destroy toxic masculinity. Karen and Georgia are the voice of a movement―badass and vulnerable as hell―and this is their manifesto.” ―Stephanie Perkins,
New York Times bestselling author of There's Someone Inside Your House

Praise for

My Favorite Murder] is today’s answer to riot grrrl, the D.I.Y. feminist punk movement of the 1990s.” ―The New York Times

The Best Self-Help Book I've Read!

The Best Self-Help Book I've Read!
Stay Sexy & Don’t Get Murdered is an awe-inspiring read that is packed with wonderful self-help tips and brutally honest stories that any reader can connect with. This book was everything I was hoping for and more. I knew that this was being marketed as a self-help book, but this seriously could not have arrived at my doorstep at a better time…Once I began reading, I just didn’t have the will-power to set it back down. I absolutely loved this book! Just like the podcast, it’s real, it’s raw, and it has some hard-hitting stories and lessons. The chapters are all organized wonderfully and with bits and pieces from the show shining through. While reading, I could really hear them narrating their chapters in my head because each of their writing styles are very similar to the way that they speak on the show. While this book covered some really heavy topics, there was plenty of light-hearted elements as well. There was also a ton of humor. I was laughing out loud every couple of pages, sometimes more than once on a single page! Needless to say, I had a great time reading this!

Much like the podcast it is funny, touching, conversational, and powerful. Karen and Georgia write in distinct, hilarious styles even when speaking about dark or low moments in their lives. The essays are mostly thematically organized with just enough off-the-cuff commentary and styling to be true to the authors themselves. Even though a few thematic chapters seem like their two essays aren't that similar in topic you don't mind the slight shoehorning of a story to fit the chapter because they are just so lovely to read.

Moments and lessons only mentioned on the podcast get deeper dives here - and what really comes through truly is their willingness to be totally open to teach nieces, young women, and even our younger selves about how to navigate this world. Vulnerability gets a lot of mentions and the book speaks to the power of opening yourself up for witness. The community these two women have cultivated is a testament to how important therapy, vulnerability, and being kind to yourself really is. This book is an extension of the podcast bookends, the intro and outro, and I believe many fans (and non-fans) will recognize feelings and thoughts and experiences they share with the authors.

I found myself laughing and then tearing up on the same page often (gotta love a footnote joke). Even though the relationship between these two and the reader is one way you do feel like you're reading the stories of a friend, and their sorrows are yours and their triumphs are as well. The connection they share with each other as well is apparent and powerful. I'm so thankful for Halloween parties.

On a personal note reading everything these two women have been talking about on the podcast for years gathered all in one place is truly inspirational. I'm particularly grateful for Karen speaking about how her therapist asked her to examine her 'inner circle', your 'clutch-five', your close friends. I feel grateful to have my own clutch-five but it reminded me that I needed to put more energy into those relationships and not to take them for granted, or let them be stagnant. I reached out to all of them and it felt really nice to reconnect and just say "You're important to me and I love you".

People unfamiliar with the podcast or these women will probably enjoy the book (if you like feminism and swearing especially) but a lot of the jokes, the titles, and just the general essence will probably fly over their heads. But at its core that's not who the book is for. The book is for the Murderinos who found a connection with these women and with each other not just based on their fascination with true crime but also their willingness to not be perfect, to grow and learn, and their vulnerability and strength in the face of a scary, rough and cynical world.

SSDGM indeed.

Are you obsessed with murder and true crime? Well, I am too! And luckily for me, two wonderful ladies created a podcast, called My Favorite Murder, to satisfy all the closet murderinos of the world. Then, they took it a step further. They wrote a book! In Stay Sexy & Don’t Get Murdered: The Definitive How-to Guide, Karen Kilgariff and Georgia Hardstark tell us all of their life stories we’ve been dying to hear. They take us through the most important events in their lives and how they shaped them into the people they are today.

Can I just say how amazing this book was? It was hilarious, insightful and inappropriate at times (which I truly love), and I just tore through this book. Karen and Georgia find countless ways to turn a hard life event an turn it into an incredibly entertaining lesson for us folks at home. I felt like I was truly getting to know these two women I constantly listen to in my car. There was never a dull moment, each section bringing something new and fun to an already amazing book! There were so many wonderful teachings about life hidden within each humorous page.

If I could recommend this book a million times I would. It’s not just about true crime and murder; in fact, those two subjects are discussed at a minimum. Rather, this is the story of two women who trialed and errored their way through life, which seemed to turn out pretty great for them. If you love memoirs, comedy, or are obsessed with the podcast My Favorite Murder, do yourself a favor and get yourself a copy of this book.

You don't have to be a fan of the massively popular My Favorite Murder podcast to enjoy this book, but as a fan who is already familiar with the writers, this book is such a joy. Karen and Georgia are incredible women all on their own, but their friendship is also really special, and I was thrilled to hear it reflected in the (audio)book as it is in the podcast. I think their friendship is a huge reason why MFM is so fun and comforting... a tremendously difficult achievement with MURDER being a primary theme, but it's ultimately a testament to their talent and authenticity. I believe Karen described the podcast as a "hang", and that's how it feels... that's how the book feels, too. These are your smart, funny, no BS girlfriends or sisters sharing stories, advice, and love, with each other and with their audience, and I'm here for it. I've enjoyed and appreciated their honesty, vulnerability, thoughtfulness, comedy, and friendship for years on the podcast, and am so excited for this addition to the MFM universe. The book delves deeper into things Karen and Georgia have discussed on the show, as well as new things, and they do it in their own perfect way that fans especially know and love. I teared up in the INTRODUCTION, for crying out loud, and was full on crying in the first chapter... wow. There were plenty of laughs, too... this book became an instant favorite that will be on regular listening rotation. In summary, love the podcast, love the book. I've heard both ladies talk about how difficult it was to write, so I want to say a huge THANK YOU to Karen and Georgia for writing it... you're simply the best!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Exceeds any expectations..

I’ve loved the podcast since it’s inception and I’ve loved getting to know both Karen and Georgia through that, so when I heard about this book I got so excited because here was another way of learning more about the people I had come to admire and respect so much. Karen’s parts of the book were as you would expect, funny, insightful and full of well thought out advice, however, she does show a much softer side to her you don’t see all that often and when she opens up you can’t help but connect (and in my case, cry my eyes out). I knew Karen’s writing and stories were going to be brilliant because of her background in comedy and writing, but what I didn’t expect was to be so blown away by Georgia. Georgia has to be one of the best authors I have read in a long time, her writing pulls you in, so much so that you actually feel like you’re in that car, driving up that mountain with her. She writes so honestly and openly in this book that it makes me rethink any previous notions I’ve had of her. I know she’s funny and clever but this book reveals so much more of her and just what a talent she is. I sincerely hope she writes another novel because I would absolutely love to read anything she writes. I can’t recommend this book enough, regardless of whether you’re a listener or not. These women are forces of nature who have shared so much of themselves in such a beautiful way. To reiterate, this book is deep, heartbreaking, heartwarming, funny, beautiful and everything you’ve ever wanted from Karen and Georgia. Thank you ladies, you mean more to us than you may ever know. Stay sexy, and don’t get murdered!
