I’m tossing it four stars because, while the twists are as sharp as a tack, sometimes the narrative can feel a tad formulaic.

Newly retired 55-year-old FBI agent Kate Wise gets caught up in a murder investigation when a friend’s daughter is murdered and the friend asks Kate to see what she can find out. She’s bored with the quiet life and, frankly, misses everything about being an agent. Soon more bodies of “happily married” suburban moms start turning up, and Kate figures there’s a serial killer stalking her quiet town.

I am a fan of this author’s other series so took a chance on this one. I like the idea of a main character in my age group, facing the same thing I’m facing – what do I do with myself when I retire. I liked everything about this book – the writing, the plot, the pacing, the character development. I like that even though she’s been retired for a year, the skills she learned on The Job stay with her and she can still best agents (and criminals) half her age. That woman can take (and throw) a punch. I enjoyed going along for the ride as Kate and her new partner solve the mystery. The book held my interest all the way through, and made the time on the elliptical whizz by. At the end of the book, I immediately bought book 2 and pretty much binge read that.

I will continue reading this series.

A who done it murder mystery with plenty of intrigue. The storyline itself was okay, but for me it fell short.
There were a few things about this story that I didn’t care for. One being how many times it was mentioned how amazing Kate was at her job, and what a legend she was. I felt as if I was reading that on every other page. There were also quite a few things that seemed too convenient. Another thing being FBI’s involvement—aside from Kate knowing the mother of a victim, there was no reason for the FBI to get involved. Also, there were several unanswered questions such as how DeMarco knew to go to the suspect’s house? How did the gloves end up in the accused’s bag?
