A Lady's Guide to Gossip and Murder (Countess of Harleigh Mysteries Book 2) Kindle Edition

4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars 1,928 ratings

The adventurous Countess Harleigh finds out just how far some will go to safeguard a secret in Dianne Freeman’s latest witty and delightful historical mystery . . .

Though American by birth, Frances Wynn, the now-widowed Countess of Harleigh, has adapted admirably to the quirks and traditions of the British aristocracy. On August twelfth, otherwise known as the Glorious Twelfth, most members of the upper class retire to their country estates for grouse-shooting season. Frances has little interest in hunting—for birds
or a second husband—and is expecting to spend a quiet few months in London with her almost-engaged sister, Lily, until the throng returns.

Instead, she’s immersed in a shocking mystery when a friend, Mary Archer, is found murdered. Frances had hoped Mary might make a suitable bride for her cousin, Charles, but their courtship recently fizzled out. Unfortunately, this puts Charles in the spotlight—along with dozens of others. It seems Mary had countless notes hidden in her home, detailing the private indiscretions of society’s elite. Frances can hardly believe that the genteel and genial Mary was a blackmailer, yet why else would she horde such juicy tidbits?

Aided by her gallant friend and neighbor, George Hazelton, Frances begins assisting the police in this highly sensitive case, learning more about her peers than she ever wished to know. Too many suspects may be worse than none at all—but even more worrying is that the number of victims is increasing too. And unless Frances takes care, she’ll soon find herself among them . . .

“Engrossing . . . Freeman takes a witty look at Victorian polite society. Historical mystery fans will be delighted.”

This was a fun story to continue the Countess of Harleigh mystery series.

It has been a while since I read the first book, but I had no problem jumping in and getting to know the characters again. I imagine this could be read as a stand-alone novel if you missed the first book.

I love the quick thinking Countess Harleigh and her antics. She is such an independent woman for the Victorian Era, which makes her more special.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a Victorian cozy mystery.

Engaging from the beginning. Good characters and a great storyline. Not just a rehashed version of something else already done.

A Lady’s Guide to Gossip and Murder is a diverting cozy Murder mystery with a side of romance. The characters are smart, especially Frances. I appreciated that the side characters that could have been stereotypical each had a bit more to their character, which made them much more interesting.

The mystery kept me guessing up to the last couple of chapters. It was also good to see Frances and George’s relationship advance. Overall, a low angst read that kept my interest and left me looking forward to the next.

I adore the main characters of this series. They are charming and witty and all around appealing. Sometimes the first person comments get a bit on the ridiculous side though and too many details are rehashed throughout the story.
I do like this author’s overall writing style and she creates characters who really draw you in deeply.

This book is mildly entertaining, but the writing is poor. It seems that every character "glares"--there is no use of any other words to describe looks, angry or otherwise. The use of "glare" is so repetitive that it would be laughable if it didn't become so annoying. Other than tha, the book is okay although it drags in spots.

This being my second book of the series I must admit Dianne Freeman has become one of my favorite authors. Cane wait to start book 3 .Laughter, murder and of course a blooming romance.

Lady Harleigh’s primary focus should be the impending engagement of her sister Lily, but a murder requires her attention. Mary Archer is an anonymous gossip columnist when she is murdered and Frances must ascertain what knowledge she had that would lead to her murder. As part of the investigation, she takes up Mary’s position at the newspaper to try to draw out the murderer. With the background story of Lily’s engagement, there are other hints of romance in the book set in a more genteel time.

I loved this book! It’s the 2nd in a series of 6 but it can definitely be read as a standalone.
Our main character, The widowed Countess of Harleigh or Frances, shocked by the death of one of her friends, decides to help her neighbour George (who’s a sort of private investigator) in finding the murderer.
In the meantime she also has to assist her younger sister in organising her engagement party. Poor Frances was really exhausted but i loved how she managed to solve the mystery and understand the needs of all the members of her family, she’s really a great main character!
The scenes between Frances and George are worth mentioning as they made me absolutely swoon 😍, even if I wish they were longer. However, the events happen in the span of a week or so and the focus is more in the investigation, so we’ll definitely have more about them in the next books
