When life at home gets too boring, 11 year-old identical triplets Emma, Emily, and Emiliana run away to the circus. All is not fun and balloons at Sir Surly's Surprising, Sirkus, however. The clown wants to get rid of them, the knife-thrower wants to throw knives at them, the ringmaster wants to shoot them out of a cannon, and a rival circus wants to steal them away. But the Ems are an irresistible force, and neither the laws of physics, nor philosophy, nor Child Protective Services are going to stop them from getting where they want to go.If only they knew where that is...

Eugene Fairfield is a teacher for youth with emotional and behavioral challenges. Previously, he was a kindergarten teacher, a rehabilitation specialist for adults with mental illness, a hospital chaplain, youth minister, bagel baker, fry cook, and window-washer.

In 1997 he won "Story of the Year" in the international "Writers of the Future" contest.

Born under the name Brian Wightman, he borrowed his great grandfather’s name when warned by author Dave Wolverton that writers with last names starting with W are at ankle-level in bookstores. That was back when books were bought in bookstores.

Eugene lives in Barre, Vermont, not far from author Katherine Paterson. He writes all manner of speculative fiction, for children, youth, and adults. He doesn’t consider himself an artist, but he’s drawn graphic novels anyway, because he wanted to.

Top review from the United States

If you’ve ever thought “I wish I could run away and join the circus,” “The Flying Ems” is a book you will want to read. Ten-year-old triplets Emiliana, Emily and Emma Astraukas are bored, bored, BORED living with their parents, whose lives are utterly predictable and safe. In fact, they are so predictable, boring and safe, they always eat the same rotation of meals each week and will not consider taking their daughters to the circus.
The triplets decide to take matters into their own hands, and run away to join Sir Surly’s Surprising Sirkus, in which their great-aunt Gabija is a part of. They are set to work helping to move the circus to another town and get assigned to an act: being the targets of the knife thrower, Silent Cal. After a few shows of ever-increasing danger, they decide to join the circus of Sir Surly’s competition and brother, Bo-Twenty, where they learn to be trapeze artists and acrobats. But what starts out as a promising possibility leads to disappointment and a thrilling competition between the two circuses, featuring the Flying Ems.
