"The world was a good place. She needed to look for it, even when life was full of pain."1900 Washington DC. Christian Historical. I was all in on the first page.Annabelle is from a farming family in Kansas. Her father was able to put her and her sister through college, which is quite a thing now, even more so back then. She and Elaine move to Washington, DC, she at the Smithsonian (later Department of Agriculture), her sister at the Library of Congress. Elaine is blind, and this seemed to be a great opportunity for her to learn and to grow, so despite the financial strain on the family, off they went.Annabelle is a botanist (something I very much had wanted to be so I can relate). Her boss wanted a rare plant that Gray Delacroix was rumored to have, and told her that a permanent position depended on her getting in to Gray's property to see if it was there. She is pleasantly pushy (I pictured June Allison) and actually manages to get in to see him. Gray is from a wealthy family, built on hard work, and it takes more hard work to keep the fortunes going. Their family has earned their reputation by providing the best quality products. Not every company was that way. These were the early days when there was a lack of safety standards in the food industry, so companies could get away with putting out a product that was not what it seems. (Doesn't seem possible now, does it?) The story unfolds interesting information about Good Housekeeping in it's early days - what they did and why - and how important to our country it was. The story takes off from there, seeming to put Annabelle on one side of things and Gray on the other. Gray's brother never really wanted to work for the family - or so it seemed. Politics, secrets, money, mystery and life all play a part in this book. Choices made, right from wrong, scruples and personal standards are reviewed and explored. Integrity - or lack of it. Nothing boring here - all together an excellent read! Don't you just love that cover? Can't wait for the next in the series."The world was a huge, wide-ope landscape bursting with opportunity, and it was up to her to choose how she would live in it."Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free from the publisher and NetGalley book review bloggers program. I absolutely loved this book. It has everything I want in a book....romance, history, Christian undertones, mystery, strong well -developed characters and a storyline that I haven't read before. So many of Elizabeth Camden's books exceed my expectations. Highly recommend.

Gray Delacroix and Annabelle Larkin are stark opposites, but they definitely attract! I found the history of food production and safety quite intriguing. The storyline was quite compelling, and I see where we get our food regulations that are in effect for our safety to this day. The 1900’s setting in Washington D.C. was also worlds different from the city that we have today. Historically speaking, I think the book was fabulous, but I was quite a bit skeptical of their relationship after all that had happened. Good Housekeeping magazine has a cameo in the book and I was surprised to find that it had been in print that long in addition to having such an impact on the assurance that our food is safe.
This is book number one in the Hope and Glory series and there are two more books in the series that have already released. I have read several of her novels and honestly can’t quite pin down a favorite. She has an excellent backlist that I could recommend, and I have several more on my wish list for the future. If you like Elizabeth Camden, then you might enjoy Jody Hedlund or Tracie Peterson.

Annabelle Larkin has a new job as a botanist with the Smithsonian Institute. Her first big assignment is a near impossible task…get an interview with the reclusive Gray Delacroix, the spice king. Gray has spent most of his life up until now traveling the globe in search of new and the best of spices to cement his family’s company as the premier supplier of superior spices. While traveling, he has collected hundreds of samples of plants to comprise an extensive collection, one the Smithsonian would like access to. Other from the Smithsonian have tried to get Gray to allow them to view his collection to no avail. Annabelle is now given the task, and if she fails, she loses her job.
Gray has returned home to run the business stateside as his father has passed away and he was the one who ran the business while Gray did the traveling. Gray’s younger brother and sister have come into adulthood while Gray has been away. He realizes he has missed most of their childhood and now wants to connect with them. His younger brother Luke is carefree, out to have a good time and doesn’t want to have much to do with the business while Gray’s younger sister Caroline is involved in fashion and high society with a talent toward politics.
This is a fascinating story! As per the usual for Elizabeth Camden, she has done her research and taken a time in history and brought it to life. The subject matter she uses to highlight in her novels are always unique and interesting. The two main characters are ones I connected to and felt their emotions as the story progressed. The romance angle was not too overdone and just right in my opinion. There were interesting subplots with Annabelle’s blind sister and her job, as well as the political involvement of both Caroline and Luke. I’ll be one of the first to ger the next book in the series due out in 2020. Don’t miss this one!!

I really enjoyed this book. We all face seemingly impossible choices. However, when you put faith in God and do your best to stay true to His teachings, those choices gain more clarity. I enjoyed learning about the food industry and the fight against unsafe ingredients. Looking forward to the other books in the series.

One of the things I especially liked about this book is all the historical facts sprinkled throughout the book, such as the Dept. of Agriculture’s search for new plants to grow, how vanilla extract is made, and the use of preservatives and fillers in canned food that went unregulated for years. I liked Annabelle, although I did not like the choice she made. And Gray was often rude to her. The see saw of emotions he had for her got a bit wearing after a while. But I like that he fell in love with her because of her fine qualities rather than what she looked like. In fact, we’re only told that she is short and has a great smile. Well written as always, and a clean romance.

I really enjoyed this historical novel where love blossoms between a sunny optimist and a grouchy loner amid an epic historical backdrop. Historical details infuse this novel, from President McKinley cutting fresh flowers for his wife each morning to the Braille education program at the Library of Congress. I learned so much about spices, orchids, botanical research, the American occupation of Cuba and the insurgency, and the counterfeit goods that led to laws requiring ingredients be listed on the label - just to name a few things! It was also wonderful to read about so many strong and determined women, including the heroine, her sister, and the hero's sister, and I admired them all greatly.

I wish we had learned more about the Cuba part of the plot, but from the description of the next book it seems there will be an overarching plot. I also wish there had been more romantic interaction between Gray and Annabelle. I loved that Gray admired Annabelle for the strength of her personality - one nice thing about sweet romance is that you won't just have the hero lusting after the heroine! - but I wished there had been more opportunity for the two of them to be together once the plot really started rolling along.

All in all though, I had a great time reading this book and I'm excited to read the next!

I had this book a long while before I read it, but after I started reading it I wondered why I waited so long! Full of love, anxiety. Hopelessness and hopefulness. It has twists and turns I didn’t expect but ended to my satisfaction. I commend Elizabeth Camden on this exceptional novel! Very much worth the read!

Not exactly what I was expecting as the title led me to think the Spice King would be full of pomp and regalia but instead I was drawn in by Annabelle’s courageous, sunny disposition. She rises from her humble roots to win the heart of this spice king in a satisfying conclusion.

4.0 out of 5 stars Strong characters with a plot that builds to the end
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 25, 2019
The Spice King is set in Washington DC, in 1900, which is a setting and time period in American history that I knew nothing about.

I liked both Gray and Annabelle from the start. They were both strong, feisty and determined to succeed in their own spheres of life.

I liked that they both have close family ties and wanted to help and support the people that mattered to them the most. I particularly enjoyed seeing the way they sparked off each other.

I definitely felt for Annabelle who was caught up in a difficult situation.

I found the plot to be quite slow at the beginning. However, I enjoyed the second half of the book much more. The tension built up until the end and I couldn’t predict how it was going to resolve.

Overall I enjoyed the book and came away satisfied.
