I closed my eyes, trying to get my bearings. Nothing made sense. My brain was foggy, out of focus.
Flashes of green light illuminated the darkness behind my eyelids. The unusual color pulled at me, reminding me of something. Something important. Hands full of crackling green lightning. An emerald amulet. A pair of irises of the exact same hue belonging to—
My eyes shot open.
“Lainey!” I lurched forward, stumbling. My stomach pitched and rolled in waves, much like the ground underneath my feet. The sky tilted toward me, and I staggered backward until my back hit the trunk of a tall cypress tree. I clung to the rough bark, waiting for the dizziness to pass.
As the world finally began to right itself, the ringing in my ears diminished, only to be replaced with a dissonant symphony of screams…
...Similar scenes were everywhere I looked. People stumbling around, disoriented and afraid. Others trying to help the injured. Hacking coughs from the thick grit in the air. Blood seeping into the ground. Many lying alone and still in the grass. It was exactly like a scene from one of those end-of the- world disaster movies. But this wasn’t a movie. It wasn’t the end of the world that had caused so much destruction.
It was a witch…
…Beads of sweat rolled down my neck, and I hissed, swatting at an ember that landed on my cheek. The sizzle of skin broke through the shock from the devastation, and I rushed forward, scanning the lawn. “Lainey!” I yelled again, searching the faces around me.
Then I felt it—the connection between us. A strand of feeling, a sense of knowing, a bond forged by magic—my magic. It was faint and growing weak, but it was enough to know that I wasn’t going to find her here on the lawn. I let out a deep breath, thanking the stars that my Praetorian senses were still working, that I could still feel her. It meant she was alive…
…I turned back to face the wasteland of the plantation. So many bodies on the ground, so much destruction. Was it possible that he had been swept up in it? Hope burned through me like a fever, fast and hot, as I scanned the crowd for the face that dominated my nightmares.
A discordant, yet familiar boom of thunder echoed across the sky. Potent and guttural, it filled the open space, erasing all other sound—and eviscerated my wishful thinking...
...Shadows—heavy and draining—surrounded the rest of us, slinking through the trees and blotting out even the emerald glow from the fire. I groaned as they wrapped around me, beckoning.
I stepped forward right as another wave of dizziness washed over me. I must have hit the ground harder than I thought when Lainey’s magic blasted apart the plantation. I put my hands on my knees and took a couple of deep breaths to steady myself.
Out of the corner of my eye, the last of the dying green flames tiptoed through the rubble, scattering ashes to the wind. I imagined what Lainey’s face would look like if she were here surveying the wreckage, the bodies in the grass.
The responding wrench of my heart made me squirm, reminding me of another look: the flash of hatred that burned in her emerald eyes as she spat in my face...
...The gnawing in my chest deepened as my father’s voice— preserved so perfectly in my mind—whispered in my ear, a conversation from long ago. “Pain is earned, son,” he said, “but you get to choose whether it limits you or reminds you of how hard you’ve fought. Win or lose, loss or gain, how we acknowledge our pain defines us. It is the tether that links us to who we really are, who we are meant to be.”
I used to think he was referring to physical pain only, but as a crushing weight—the truth of who Ty Marek really was—pressed against my heart, I finally understood.
If pain is a tether, then I am unbreakable chain—each link forged through blood and iniquity.

As for the story, there were so many parts where I was just sitting there like, “YES!” The relationships that are built in this book were super fun to read about, I do wish that there was a little more of it sometimes, but they were well done. Let me say again, I love Maggie. Her relationship with this new boy kills me, it’s so funny! Of course, one of my favorite things about the duology isn’t the romantic relationships, but the friend and family relationships. The relationship between Lainey and Maggie is so sweet, everyone deserves to have a BFF like this. I also loved the different versions of relationships between family members and the strength that is shown through them.
The plot for this story is interesting. I love books with magic in them and part of that comes from getting to watch these magical people learn more about their powers and become more confident in them. This book did not disappoint. Lainey had a lot to learn since the end of the first book, both in terms of magic and how to deal with different internal struggles she’s dealing with. It was interesting to watch her emotional journey and the way that the previous events have an effect on her in this book.
Overall, this was a satisfying conclusion to this duology and I would highly recommend it!
Oh. My. Goodness! I read Keeper and loved every step of the journey, so I knew that I would love Seeker. However, I wasn't prepared for just how much I would! It sucks you into a whirlpool of emotion, and danger, love, and betrayal, at times, even breaking your heart. This sequel to Keeper is darker. While it still holds some happy moments, it grasps onto you and pulls you into delicious darkness. The descriptive writing draws you into the story. I could see, taste and feel their world! Not just their surroundings, but I could feel their feelings. There were times I had to set the book down and count to three because the lump in my own blocked the breath in my lungs as I was sent spiraling into heartbreak. My foot tapped impatiently on the floor, my eyes wide with wonder as I ate the words of the book in anticipation. I adored seeing the world through different eyes thanks to the Multi-point-of-view, the author chose to tell the story through. I loved getting to know the characters I fell in love with in Keeper, on such a deep level.
I wish it wasn't over. I am hopeful that the ending we are left with - (while it is a perfect ending.) I feel like it could be twisted for a third installment. (Fingers crossed- and hopeful.) I loved these books so much that I am having a hard time letting go of the world that I enjoyed so much getting to be a part of. Great story! Well told. Definitely, something that deserves read!
I was lucky enough to receive an early copy of Seeker by Kim Chance. I loved Keeper so I was excited to get my hands on a copy of the sequel. In my opinion, this story was even better than the first. Kim knocked it out of the park with this one. We are back with old favorites as well as a whole cast of new friends (and enemies). We get to follow the perspectives of our three main characters Lainey, Maggie and Ty. I loved that we got to be in the heads of Maggie and Ty in this book. Maggie is one of my most favorite characters and she is the worlds best friend. I need a friend like Maggie in my life. We see her balance friendship with her own struggles about who she is and who she wants to be. Additionally, we get to work through some complex emotions between Ty and Lainey (both together and individually). All of this is set against the backdrop of a ticking clock leading to an epic battle of good versus evil. This book has laughs and heartbreak, action and emotion and most of all a thrilling conclusion. If you loved Keeper, I hope you are like me and love Seeker even more.

While i can understand others may have found it a bit disjarring to be switching between 3 POV'S i found that each held their own strongly and came together to allow us to understand and experience much more of Kim's world and each POV had wonderful moments that allowed all three characters to display the best and sometimes the worst in themselves and humanity which brings the story nicely together.
I loved Lainey's and Maggie's frienship in the first book and it does dissapoint in this one either. Even though i don't read comics i've watched enough superhero films to strongly relate to many of Maggie's references which strongly enhanced the story for me, i was surprised to find myself just as excited to explore Maggie's POV and i was to explore Lainey's in the first and in this book. There are so many quotable moments but i don't want to spoil for people who haven't read yet.
Kim clearly shows rather than tells so much of the story with ease that i was quickly immersed in her world, especially with how well she described the battle in interesting ways. Its very easy to care greatly for all 3 of her main characters and how much they rely on each others support, interact with each other and the world around them.
There's definately clear threats as events unfold that make you wonder if all 3 will make it to the end alive or not. Of which i'm not going to spoil. But there was definately some heartbreaking moments in there too all of which i would love to see on the big screen one day.
Thank you Kim, i have learnt so much from reading your stories, some of which that i hope will drastically improve my own. I look forward to reading whatever comes next. Whether that's a continuation of characters from this world or something new altogether.
So overall, I gave this book a 4/5 stars. For a duology, it wraps up nicely, the pacing was right, and everything that happened felt necessary. What I will say, however, is a few scenes did feel a little bland because they were drawn out or that I figured out what was going to happen. That's not always a bad thing. Working things out means the reader is then in with the characters, and you want to scream at them to run or to fight. But there was one scene in this book in particular where I could see exactly what was going to happen from the very sentence. Yet that doesn't mean it'd be everyone's experience.
Lainey was brilliant. Her emotions and thoughts were so clear. You could feel her shame, her anger, her frustration. You could even feel the disappointment she had in herself. Maggie (again, who holds my heart) wasn't just a side-character. She was an MC too. And that's so refreshing! (Which is sad to say, because all characters should be relevant...) Ty was a butt, and though I didn't completely forgive him, as a character, for the choices, I could at least understand and respect them. It made him a morally grey character; someone who was willing to even do the dirtiest of jobs if it meant getting what he wanted. The other characters, for me, were a little looser, but they didn't have much to do with the story, so I'm not too upset.
The most heart-breaking bit ***SPOILERS*** is when Lainey goes to the veil and sees her "uncle". Out of everyone, to see him? I was kind of hoping for another Josephine moment, a sisterly bond of sorts, but actually this moment turned out better than expected.
