WHAT IS THE BURIED GODDESS SAGA?

That’s a great question. One that took us one million words to answer.

In 2017, Rhett and Jaime embarked on a journey we’d never expected. From a hasty note scribbled in the middle of the night, a massive, epic series was born.

When we started this thing, we had no idea it was going to carry us through six books, three years, one million words, over a hundred hours of audiobooks, and through the lives of almost one hundred named characters. We certainly didn’t expect the world to fall in love with a vampire named Kazimir.

BUT WHY SHOULDN’T THEY? LOOK AT HIM, DOESN’T HE MAKE YOU SWOON?

No one expected Mahi’s story to develop like it did, either, not even us. But we are so thrilled by it.

The Black Sands—or Shesaitju—culture began as a mixture of Jamaican and Middle Eastern but became so much more. From their luminescent nigh’jels to the zhulong, the world just breathes steadily as if it had been there for a million years and it’ll stand a million more.

The Buried Goddess herself? Is she real? What does she want? And what then of the other gods and goddesses? If you haven’t read the Buried Goddess Saga, now is the time. If you have… thank you, Shieldsmen and Shieldswomen for your service.

Review

"Fantastic world building and masterful prose. Definitely a must read for Epic Fantasy fans." --Brian D. Anderson, bestselling author of The Godling Chronicles

"An interesting and exciting start to a series. I'm looking forward to reading what the authors come up with next!" --Dakota Krout, author of the Divine Dungeon Series and winner of Audible Top 5 Fantasy of 2017.

"A gritty, dark fantasy disguised as a lighthearted epic... Creativity and twists were yielded as effectively as swords and daggers. The diverse cast of characters are perfectly imperfect, which made them easy to cheer for. I am looking forward to the sequel!" --David Estes, bestselling author of Fatemarked

"Bruno and Castle built an epic fantasy world that captivates the imagination and brings the reading on a thrilling adventure that will leave the devotees of fantasy eager for the next tale." --Jason Anspach, Bestselling author of the Galaxy's Edge Series

"Rich developed characters meet vivid descriptions and a twisted plot that keeps you turning the pages...an enthralling start to a promising series!" --J.T. Williams, USA Today Bestselling Author of the Half-Elf Chronicles

"A great story that kept me entertained and reading until the end... Cannot wait to see what happens in book 2." --Christy, Amazon Top Contributor: Fantasy Books

"Imaginative world-building... complex politics with a variety of nations and influences... I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys adventure fantasy." --By Rite of Word

The buried goddess has risen and the tainted Glass Kingdom wages a desperate war to survive. There are no longer heroes or villains between the nations: only bands of people struggling for power, vengeance, and life. Even the original trilogy’s trio—the thief, mage and warrior---are buried…but not dead. They’ve been transformed into the wanderer, the captive and the magistrate. In War of Men, they struggle to finding their true selves and each other—using all their skill and courage to overcome the absolute chaos raining all around them. The question is can they do anything to stop the earthen goddess as she gathers her army for the final battle? With undead ravengers stalking the land and nations clashing, no one escapes this story unscathed.

War of Men does not disappoint. The story continues (without spoilers here) to draw the reader along through the adventures of unlikely allies and twists of fate.
Our beloved knight seems to be growing up, but still makes some impetuous decisions, for better and worse.
Editing is good, with another thorough pass being a good idea.
Grandaughter test - fail - This is important to me when I read a book. Would I be willing to give this to my precious granddaughter to read? Sadly, no way. While that's fairly typical and nobody wants to be labeled a "prude" in today's culture, it still matters to some people. There are statements made that I could not in clear conscience put in the hands of my granddaughter.
Having said that, the story, as stated above, is well written and woven. It's captivating and very enjoyable. I look forward to the next installment.

This series is absolutely one of the top sci-fi/fantasy books I’ve read and I’ve read plenty . I love the authors’ style of writing- it’s witty, descriptive, funny, and a page turner. They have built a beautiful world and story. I couldn’t wait for book 5 to release and can’t wait for the finale. Although, I am sad that the series will be ending. I will be reading more of both authors and recommend this to any sci-fi/fantasy fanatics like myself. It is a must read.

I rarely give 5 stars on any book , but I gave the others all 4 stars ( and they deserved it) . This pace and character evolution seemed to really come together this time. I found myself engrossed in each character's story and enjoyed each of there journeys.

War of Men is the extraordinary 5th evolution of the Buried Goddess Saga, following on from ‘Way of Gods’.
War of Men does not disappoint, with a fast-paced book full of action, powerful, emotive characters, and a gripping storyline that not only leaves you wanting more, but takes you on a rollercoaster ride through a full spectrum of emotions.
As with each of the other books, the story is told from the point of view of the various characters: ‘The Goddess’ (Nesilia – the Buried Goddess Herself), ‘The Thief’ – Whitney Fierstown, ‘The Knight’ – Torsten Unger, ‘The Rebel’ – Muskigo, ‘The Daughter’ – Mahraveh Ayerahi, ‘The Immortal’ - Kazimir. and finally, ‘The Redeemer’ – Sir Rand Langley.
This book sees Nesilia really come into her own as she seems to fully grasp the power that Sora is able to give her. It is fascinating watching a deity walk the land, and having those that believe fall to their knees, whilst those that don’t foolishly try to stand up to her, only to feel her wrath. Nesilia truly has returned, and the world is in a lot of trouble for it. One of the really fun things in this book is that there are all these little clues to her return, various creatures that no one has seen forever and things like this, all rising, or coming together as they know their God has returned, but no one else understands what it means. It is these little extras that show the depth of thought that has gone into this story, the world building surrounding the characters, it is just brilliant.
Meanwhile, Whitney continues his desperate mission to find Sora, with the help of Kazimir and what is left of the Troupe, but he will not relent as he knows that she is alive, and that her soul is within her body. Worse still, he knows that it is Nesilia that inhabits her, and he knows he has to do everything in his power to stop her.
On the Black Sands, Muskigo battles with Babrak for control in the absence of the Caleef. Muskigo is also fueled by grief and anger, thinking that his sand mouse is dead. Of course, she is not, Mahi is happily crushing Glassman wherever she goes, as well as any of her own people stupid enough to oppose her.
The sheer scale of the story, the world building, the culture and history that has gone into those of the Black Sands is just amazing, and makes for a fascinating part of this series. Each of the characters, from Babrak, to Muskigo, to the beautiful but deadly Mahi, and even all the minor characters, are just fascinating. This is one of the truly exceptional parts of this series.
One of the truly outstanding characters in this series has been Torsten Unger, who has gone from being the Wearer of White, and leader of the Knights, he has been a prisoner at times and never given up, he has lost his sight, and with it, his position, his ability to fight, and to a large extent, his entire ‘Self’, but he has continued, and even through it all, he has been true to Iam. As a reward, he is gifted with a cloth of sight from a Priest of Iam, someone who you would not expect to bestow such an honour, but none the less, he does, and when the cloth is tied around Torstens eyes, he can see again. For those that have played any DnD there is the Character of a Paladin, a Holy Knight who earns the favour of a God through their acts of virtue, honour, courage, and fighting evil, everything that Torsten is.
This series is only getting better with each book as we move towards the conclusion, in which the forces of good will bring down Nesilia (or the body she inhabits, casting her back to the divine realm), or Nesilia will conquer all of Pantego, and do as she sees fit.
If you are looking for a brilliant fantasy series that has some real depth, not just in its characters, but in its world building and story-telling, this is the series to get into. One thing I really love about this series is that it has direction, the Authors, Bruno and Castle, both know what is going to happen, they have obviously since book 1, and have had it all planned out. Too often in Epic series we see the series fold in on itself as plot lines cross over or get forgotten entirely. But with the Buried Goddess Saga, this is not the case, plot lines are clean, they close off everything they start, and no characters are forgotten, it makes for outstanding reading.
This is one of the best fantasy series out there.

Intense moments in this one, as expected. I love the pov switches and how we can see from so many points of view for this epic war. One of my favorite plots in this one was the father and his daughter, but there is also a brother and sister plot line with emotional hooks. Great job line by line and overall!

I really enjoyed this entire series, with the exception of this book. Nesilia is not written well. There is too much description about why she says what she says, and what she really means. There are better ways to portray manipulation, a cruel nature, narcissism, cold disregard, etc. That said, if you can push through the chapters focused on her and get to the last book, the series is well worth reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best Stories (books 1-5) I’ve read
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 13, 2019
This Saga has just constantly got better, and it started very well, it’s a long time since I’ve read something that has just completely grabbed hold and not let go (some of Fels books, actually all I think and Terry Goodkind, George Martin) this feels like it’s up there with the best - time will tell. Whatever, I love the series and look forward with anticipation and sadness (it means the end of this cycle- I think) to book #6.

I enjoyed this entry. Well paced action. The point of view characters are kept under control so this series hasn't bloated like so many others. The hatreds and rivalrys between the characters only helps the buried goddess. While men fight she is planning revenge on everyone. Good characters who are believable. Flawed, brave, cowardly and hopeful for a better future. Witney is in fine form and even the knight seems to have matured. Characters aren't safe as this tale reaches the climax of the story. I'm looking forward to the next entry.
