Sherlock Holmes - The Waterloo Colour and Other Stories (Sherlock Holmes Singular Tales) Kindle Edition

4.3 4.3 out of 5 stars 244 ratings

Ensign the Hon. Ian Lewin, 112th Foot, deliberately allowed the French to capture his regiment’s flag at the Battle of Waterloo.
A seventy-year-old cold case of cowardice in the face of the enemy leads Holmes to France on the trail of the missing Waterloo colour.

In 'Angelique', the first of five traditional stories narrated by Doctor Watson and with an occasional wry twist, Holmes is incapacitated by fever, and he requires his fellow lodger Doctor Watson to act as his sleuthhound in a missing persons case. Watson is constrained by Holmes to procure,
“raw facts, my dear fellow. Do not expend your energy in analysis: leave that to me.”
Watson’s investigation uncovers two separate, competing conspiracies, with each conspirator plotting the destruction of the other.

'The Waterloo Colour' has Holmes investigating a seventy-year-old mystery that has spawned at least one duel and has had two families at each others’ throats for a generation.

The story of 'The Benevolent and Virtuous Order of the Swamp Python' sees a Chinese secret society attempt to establish itself in South London and Holmes’ use of the most modern technology to thwart them.

In 'The Abominable Madame Ricoletti', the escape of a patient from the lunatic asylum at Broadmoor puts Holmes, Watson and Lestrade at terrible risk.

In 'Amity Among Nations', Holmes must find the source of a leak of diplomatic secrets that might be a catalyst for war between Great Britain and the United States.

Join Holmes and Watson in their adventures in London’s Chinatown, on the murky Thames, in Paris and an obscure abbey on the French border with Belgium, and in the secret recesses of the Foreign Office.

Mike's early interest in all things Victorian led to a university degree in English and research on Thomas Carlyle from which he rebounded into writing mostly humour.

His first books were a series of Sherlock Holmes pastiches featuring schoolboy Winston Churchill as the cuckoo in the nest at 221b Baker Street - now available as a box set. A novel and six collections of traditional Sherlock Holmes themed short stories followed, and he is working on further volumes.

His recent novel in which Holmes and Watson are on the trail of the two fiends who stalked London in 1888, Jack the Ripper and the Thames Torso murderer, won second prize in the annual Ripperology Books competition.

His coming-of-age novel set in London in 1963 - Hamlet and Me - is based on his working-class, Anglo-Irish upbringing. A novel set in Rome in 575 AD reflects his interest in early Christianity and all things Roman, and a comedy based on the aftermath of the 2016 US presidential election was informed by his annual railroad odyssey around and across the United States on Amtrak.

The 8th in his Sherlock Holmes short story collection, Sherlock Holmes: The Tesla Tele-automaton and other Stories is available on Amazon. For more information on Mike and his books see http://mikehoganauthor.com.

Really enjoyed this one and bought the whole series. Well written. The characters have a few new quirks but are still faithful to the originals. Depiction of Victorian London makes you fell like you're there. One thing I truly appreciated - no hype or sensational plot lines. These are all typical Holmes and Watson adventures.

Some good plots, some good character development. All in all, what I expect from a pastiche. Watson, particularly rings true.

If you are looking for more Holmes stories or just interested in a good read--you can't go wrong with this new book by Mike Hogan. Superb Holmes and Watson and seasoned with just the right amount of mystery and humor.

Having read quite a few of Mike Hogan's Sherlockian pastiches, I particularly admire the depth of his scholarship. The many authentic details are greatly appreciated by this fan of the lost world of Victorian England. However, some readers may be disturbed by the fact that Hogan's Watson has more than a trace of the DNA of Nigel Bruce. The depiction of the relationship between Holmes and Watson is also sometimes a bit "off" compared to the Canon, for example when Holmes and Watson walk "arm in arm" to a nearby restaurant, and then go off to investigate a new case in the same posture. What we have here are quite a few short stories in which Holmes and Watson are faced with a wide variety of cases. Every reader is likely to have a favorite, and I won't reveal mine here. I enjoyed the volume, from cover to cover.

The Waterloo Colour brought tears to my eyes as the story concluded. This story alone merits the 5 🌟 + that I ascribe to this remarkable endeavor by Mr. Hogan.
