MEET THE DETECTIVE
Detective Inspector Siv Drummond is widowed following a tragic accident involving her husband. With everything in London reminding her of the past, she moves from a high-profile squad with the Met to a new job as DI in her old home town — sleepy, seaside Berminster. She’s still grieving and lonely, but she’s a fighter and she's smart, which earns her the respect of her colleagues DS Ali Carlin and DC Patrick Hill, and the grudging approval of her DCI, who wants his protégé to get her job.

WHAT READERS ARE SAYING ABOUT THESE LITTLE LIES:

Very good mystery thriller

Very good mystery thriller
A solid mystery thriller by an author I will definitely read again. The ending had quite a surprising twist!DI Siv Drummond lost her husband in a tragic accident and she decides to make a fresh start in Berminster. Instead of easing herself into her new job she gets thrown in at the deep end when two bodies are discovered on her first day on the job.The one body was that of the 25 year old Lauren Visser who was stabbed, possibly with scissors. On her body the killer also left a photo of a young girl. The second body was that of the 20 year old Matis Rimas who was originally from Lithuania. How are these two people related or was it just random killings? Who is the young girl in the photo?Siv must not only find out who is telling the truth and who is lying but she must also fight her own demons.A really enjoyable read.

I've read the Tyrone Swift series and really enjoyed them, so I was excited, but a little apprehensive, to start this series. I needn't have worried. Very good! I liked the police team, and even though some of them are dealing with very traumatic issues, they function without a lot of over-the-top drama and anger that you find in a lot of police procedurals. Very well written and kept me reading far too late. The ending was a complete surprise. I only have one issue with this book, which is "what happened with the dog?" As an extreme animal lover, I was so sad to get to the end of the book without that being resolved. I highly recommend this book and I will be hopping right into the next one in the series. If you haven't read any other books by this author, I suggest you read her Tyrone Swift series. Her endings are abrupt, but the books are still highly addictive and very readable.

Knowing from the description that there would be a twist at the end I still couldn't keep from forming a short list of my 'who done it' subjects. I was wrong. This was very well written and kept me guessing.

I don't know if it was this book or one by another UK author, but a 1-star reviewer complained about the words that weren't known to her. I've found a new word for one who needs a bath ---pongy. Great way to expand your vocabulary! Ummm think I'll use pongy on my husband when he comes back in after yardwork. ;-)

This new series by Gretta Mulrooney introduces some characters the reader can enjoy getting to know. Siv, still mourning the sudden death of her husband, has left London to take a position at the local police force in Berminster. She had spent her teen years living there with her father after her vagabond mother had married and put Siv and her sister on a train. For relaxation and peace, Siv creates intricate Origami pieces. Her second is Ali, diabetic and overweight, married to a chef who tries to monitor his diet. The third member of the team is Patrick, aficionado of Twitter who cares for an older brother who has had a stroke. The day they meet, before Siv can even arrive at the station, they are assigned a double murder beside a river with no clues. Routine police work finally provides enough evidence for inspiration to hit, but not before another death. The solution is a bit out of left field--perhaps half can be guessed. Personally, I would rather see the solution coming than have it appear with no groundwork. That always seems like cheating to create a surprise ending. This book has elements of both, one part has groundwork and the other comes out of the blue. Perhaps this should be a 4 star review. However, it is an engaging book, I liked the characters, and I am looking forward to another in the series with the hope that the next solution will be a bit more fair.

Unfortunately, this was a bit depressing.
Siv is trying to make a new start in her life since her husband died, but it seems as if everything is going against her...
There was a twist ending as promised. But by the time we got there, I wasn't sure who the character was!
And at the end, instead of being able to celebrate her win, she is hit with more depressing events!!!
Sorry, just too negative for me.

I really enjoyed this first in a series. I like the character of Siv. She is complex and smart. Her team is interesting as well. The author has done a fine job establishing the foundation for a detective/Crime series. The plot of this story was very well told and expertly crafted. Additionally, I enjoyed the vivid description of the area. I'm looking g forward to reading the next in the series. I do like Ms. Mulrooney's writing style very much. Smart, funny clever. I recommend picking this book up and giving it a go.Nice escape if British Crime is your thing.

This is the 1st book in a new series introducing strong female DI Siv Drummond. Returning to work after bereavement leave and transferring to her hometown her 1st day starts with her in charge of a new team and the investigation of 2 dead bodies. Great police procedural! The investigation covers interviewing multiple suspects having secrets, lies and alliances. It starts off slow with few clues but gains momentum. The characters were well developed and provided a glimpse into their lives giving the characters depth and an understanding of their behavior but didn't detract from performing their jobs. Surprise ending with many twists and turns.

I’d never read Greta Mulroney, and when I started the book I wasn’t sure. Then the story got going and Siv Drummond was a fantastic character you could root for while she dealt with her own family history. A good read that had you reading to the end to discover the killer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very British crime thriller
Reviewed in Italy on April 1, 2021
There is a big difference between British crime writers and their American counterparts. American crime thrillers tend to have guns, shootings and in many cases an overabundance of forensic science. What I like about British crime writers is the simplicity of the story and it's telling. There is a murder and a series of suspects . The strength of the story is how the detective resolves the mystery. Door to door enquiries and good old British cups of tea and hard graft. If you like that type of crime solving then this is the book for you. Personally I loved it. Great characters and a Damn good read.
