Gabrielle Mathieu lived on three continents by the age of eight. She’d experienced the bustling bazaars of Pakistan, the serenity of Swiss mountain lakes, and the chaos of the immigration desk at the JFK airport. Perhaps that’s why she developed an appetite for the unusual and disorienting. Her fantasy books are grounded in her experience of different cultures and interest in altered states of consciousness (mostly white wine and yoga these days). The Falcon Flies Alone is her debut novel. The Falcon Strikes is scheduled for early 2017. The series will conclude with The Falcon Soars.

Eighteen-year-old Berona has grown up in a conservative, medieval-like society that wants to confine her to marriage and motherhood, despite her fiery nature and obvious gifts. That all gets derailed when the Water Demon, humanity's ancient enemy, escapes her 600-year prison and hunts Berona down in response to an ancient prophecy that only a mythical Girl of Fire can defeat the Demon.

As in the best novels, this becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy: by targeting Berona, the Water Demon in fact sets in motion the very events that will lead to her destruction. But this well-told tale also has a twist: the Water Demon is also the planet's First Mother, determined to protect its environment from the ravages of the human-like species, which include Elders and dwarves.

Berona is an appealing heroine, flawed but determined. The world she inhabits—which includes the Island Kingdom of Vendrisi, filled with artists and scientists, and the Mannite community of healers, warriors, and magicians as well as Berona's own homeland of Trea—is richly imagined and fresh. An excellent read. Can't wait to find out what happens in the next one!

After Reading Ms. Mathieu's Falcom series, I was looking forward to her latest endeavor. I was drawn right in to the narrative of a young woman discovering her power through events she felt she had little control over. I loved the authors incorporation of the elements, earth, wind, fire and water and their anthropomorphized expression is especially intriguing. This book is a very engaging read. Can't wait to see how Berona comes into her full adulthood in the next book of the series.

I received an electronic advance copy of this book by the author in exchange for an honest review.

I really liked the idea of a fantasy story with a soft main character forced to be strong who still stays soft and romantic throughout the book – also that cover is fantastic, although I normally don’t love covers with people on them! Girl of Fire was entertaining, a good read if you enjoy classic fantasy tropes – I liked it, I just did not love it.

I think at this point I’ve read many, many YA fantasy books, so it’s difficult for one to stand out – and a lot in Girl of Fire is promising, but the execution was so similar to what I’ve seen in so many other books of the genre that I didn’t think this stood out too much. I think that the other series by this author (The Falcon Series) stood out a lot more to me, because of how unique it is. I wish the internal monologue of the characters had been a little less, so as not to break the narrative so much. The story became much more engaging as it went on, with lots of adventure, magic and a bit dark, too.

If you love YA fantasies and are craving something with demons and lots of magic, you might want to check this out!

This coming of age story revolves around a heroine who discovers her powers with the help of others while struggling to understand and keep up with the ancient evil that is awakening. Thankfully the romance was unobtrusive and was used to forward the plot, and the characters were well-written. Highly recommend for young adults and adults alike!

Loved the whole concept of the Robed people and their tasks per color of their robe. Berona and Shandon had a very special bond and I was sad at their outcome. The elders and elementals were a good edition. Can't wait to read more.

While the overall plot was typical for the genre, it was well written and did draw you in.
Pros: It is an engaging story with modern relationships and interesting viewpoints. I did like how it changed to different characters 1st person perspectives. I am looking forward to the next book!
Cons: At times, it did seem a little rushed, not enough time spent on the places that we were supposed to 'feel' something for and the relationship between Berona and Kai seemed a little forced. One second he was saying how he's not going to throw himself at her, there are other fish in the sea, the next he is heading out to sacrifice himself for her love.
Overall, I really enjoyed it and again am looking forward to the rest of the series! I was lucky enough to receive this book via Voracious Readers Only.

With a central character that starts weak and becomes the strong central figure, this book is amazing. It has very strong female characters that could be role models for today's youths. I found this book to be very enlightening in the way the author handles the different aspects of human relationships. I received this through Voracious Readers.
