About the Author

ECPA bestselling author Amanda Barratt, fell in love with writing in grade school when she wrote her first story—a spinoff of Jane Eyre. Pegg Thomas lives on a hobby farm in Northern Michigan with Michael, her husband of *mumble* years. A life-long history geek, she writes “History with a Touch of Humor.” When not working on her latest novel, Pegg can be found in her garden, in her kitchen, with her sheep, at her spinning wheel, or on her trusty old horse, Trooper. See more at PeggThomas.com.

Jennifer Uhlarik discovered the western genre as a preteen, when she swiped the only “horse” book she found on her older brother’s bookshelf. A new love was born. Across the next ten years, she devoured Louis L’Amour westerns and fell in love with the genre. In college at the University of Tampa, she began penning her own story of the Old West. Armed with a BA in writing, she has won five writing competitions and was a finalist in two others. In addition to writing, she has held jobs as a private business owner, a schoolteacher, a marketing director, and her favorite—a full-time homemaker. Where should I begin with all 4 of these stories? Each story brought you back in time with some humor, hurt that could heal, and romance. I could not put this collection down until the very end. Each story grabbed you and wouldn't let go. If I put them in order of my favorite to favorite because I loved all it would be. Worth Fighting For, A Malleable Heart, Forging Forever and A tempered Heart. As always I want more from these stories at the end but, my imagination can figure out where each one would have been taken.

Blacksmith Brides is anthology of four novellas revolving around blacksmiths from various times in history and the women with whom they fall in love. Authors Pegg Thomas, Amanda Barratt, Angela K. Couch, and Jennifer Uhlarik combine to bring us this wonderful collection of romantic stories.

While I love history and novellas, the concept of blacksmiths is what drew me to this book. I was curious how the authors would create the relationships around that particular profession. We can jump to the stereotype of muscled men swinging their hammer beside a glowing forge. However, that stereotype is accurate because that’s precisely what it takes to do what they do and the authors of Blacksmith Brides breathed freshness into it.

Over the hundred or so years covered in Blacksmith Brides, blacksmithing didn’t seem to change much. All four men were hard working, willing to bare the heat and dirt to craft beautiful and necessary items from common metal. But individually they saw the world very differently. Perhaps hardened because of their circumstances, or fiercely protective of the vulnerable, or wishing for a new life, to be more than just a blacksmith.

The women who fell in love with these men were all strong, capable women. Well matched to the blacksmiths’ strengths. They came from a variety of stations and responsibilities. But much rested on their shoulders. As they came to see the heart behind their blacksmith, each woman had to decide whether to accept a partner to share their load. But what was equally true is how each held a key to unlocking their blacksmith’s best self.

I admired how the authors did not shy away from difficult topics, even in such short stories. Abuse, slavery, and war were all common themes. Throughout the stories, the characters’ relationship – or lack of relationship – with God is woven in without being obnoxious. What struck me most, however, was how lasting the stories felt. After I finished reading each one, I found myself thinking about it long afterward.

On that note alone I would recommend reading these stories. But if you also love history, romance, and a fascinating profession, then definitely pick up a copy of Blacksmith Brides.

"Had she truly flirted with the blacksmith?" She'd never flirted with anyone before. Never wanted to, even if her brothers would have allowed it." - Worth Fighting For by Pegg Thomas

"She'd agreed to wed a stranger because he owned a cottage with a roof that didn't leak." - Forging Forever by Amanda Barratt

"A laborer doused with sweat? Or a man with the power to wield iron into something of worth? Able to be something of worth." - A Tempered Heart by Angela K. Couch

"Trust doesn't come easy for me. Anyone I've ever trusted has died . . . or turned on me." - A Malleable Heart by Jennifer Uhlarik

As you can see, these four notable novellas are filled with a wide range of emotions; their heroines certainly second guessing themselves more than once. Thankfully, laugher is good medicine when it comes to dealing with big, bold, strong, sweaty men who who handle tools of steel, but possess hearts of gold.

What a great collection!

The Blacksmith Brides is a well-written Christian historical fiction anthology.

Worth Fighting For (1774—Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) by Pegg Thomas

There is talk of war, however, Meg McCraken has no time for such talk. Meg is seventeen and wants to find a beau. While Meg’s brothers and father are getting ready to fight in the war the blacksmith, Alexander Ogilvie, refused to go to war. Instead, Alexander had a desire to go west.

I was very surprised to see a distinguished visitor show up in the story and was eager to learn more. I would love to see a continuation of this story.

Forging Forever (1798—Cornwall, England) by Amanda Barratt

In his dying breath, Charles Bainbridge deeded his property to Josiah Hendrick instead of to his cousin Phineas Treverick. Elowyn Brody’s father auctioned her off calling her comely. Would her life be better? How could it? This was a beautiful story.

A Tempered Heart (1861—Charlottesville, Virginia) By Angela K. Couch

Thomas Flynn’s reward after serving as an apprentice for fifteen years was a run-down shop, a heavy lease, and debt. When Esther Mathews’s husband passed he left her with a hefty sum and with a young son. This was a wonderful story.

A Malleable Heart (California—1870) by Jennifer Uhlarik

After the passing of her parents, Leah Guthrie was appointed caretaker for her two sisters and one mischievous brother. Bo Allen and Leah Guthrie are introduced to one another because of the antics of her brother. I felt Bo and Leah worked well together.

I loved each of these stories and give Blacksmith Brides 5*/5*
