    This feels like one of those sci-fi serials they used to run before the feature film in movie theater. There's a cliffhanger every couple of chapters or so and each of the books in this collection run together. The writing is a little stiff but it fits the military background of the narrator. There's a fair amount of gratuitous violence and death, especially in the beginning of the first book. Enough to make me decide to stop reading after I finished the first book but I couldn't. Overall, it's a good story and I think it gets better as goes along.
