I have just finished the first 8 books without a break to read any other books. That is no easy task since they probably average 750 pages each for an estimated total of 6,000 pages. I received books 1 through 3 free not realizing what was in store for me. I was immediately hooked on the story and characters. So, I immediately bought the remaining 5 books and came across a surprise. I must warn potential readers of 2 things.
First, all of these books could stand some serious proofreading. Missing words, redundancies, punctuation errors, and misspellings are fairly rampant. However the books are so interesting that I overlooked them all..
Secondly, the books contain an element of fantasy that caught me off-guard. I generally don't read fantasy (except The Healers of Meligna by K.J. Colt). fortunately the fantasy fits in well and actually adds to the story and characters.
I initially thought there were only 8 books in the series but when I finished Book #8, I realized there will be at least one more but not for another 9 months.
This is a good apocalyptic genre story. I like it so much that I immediately purchased a 3 book series by this author. I enjoy lengthy novels and Ms White manages to keep them interesting. I have no doubt that I will have read everything she has written prior to end of summer.

It took me a while to consider how I should write this review. This was not the smoothest most polished effort I have ever seen by an author, and is not what I would consider high literature.

That being said... I have Books 1-5 and a couple other stories by this author in my Kindle now.

I am not going to reprise the plot line and give a summary of what happens in the book (the book description and plenty of the other reviews do that, so why waste your time), but I can give my views of how I saw the book (series) overall.

The editing in this book is kind of rough. I actually purchased the "unedited" version of the first book for comparison, and yes, I can tell there was definitely an effort made between the two, but there are still a few grammatical rough spots, etc. I guess this is just the risk we take in a world where new authors self-publish without the professional editing/proofreading powers of the major publishing houses behind them.

And maybe that's a good thing. Because even though I think a good editor could have helped smooth away the rough edges, I wonder if this work would have made it through the big publishing houses, and it is judge edgy enough I sort of suspect it might not have.

This book, and in fact the entire series, reads a bit like a Young Adult romance. As someone that personally left behind the definition of "young adult" in my life more than two decades ago, there are plenty of cringe-worthy "gack" moments in this series for me. There are also a few instances where I truly wonder if Ms. White was trying for a bit of shock value by being non politically correct.

But it's the Apocalypse. Nothing is politically correct.

And as I read this book (an it's sequels) I began to notice that when the main character (the author's namesake) started to act particularly insipid, I was irritated with her. Or, when one of the assorted male characters was acting like a jerk, I was disgusted with him. THEN I realized... in spite of the series' shortcoming, she had sucked me in. The story was compelling enough that I actually cared that the characters were acting like idiots.

There are assorted spots in these books that are annoying... more of the author's projection of how she thinks someone should feel rather than what someone would likely actually feel, but that whole naive thing sort of goes along with the typical YA romance genre anyway, so doesn't kill the story.

Four stars for the entertainment, one star removed for the room for improvement I think this author will take advantage of if she keeps writing.

All aboard for a non-stop ride through the post apocalyptic world of "Life After War". Once again Angela White proves she is becoming one of the best authors at working with numerous characters and allowing you to invest in all of them. She honestly makes me get upset when she changes from character to character because I want to keep reading about the current one. But no sooner does she switch them; I get absorbed in the next one. This series has gotten better with each installment; "Adrian's Eagles" is an excellent addition to the story. In this one White does a very adept job of interweaving action, romance, drama and magic that allows you to better understand the characters. In these books you see characters from many angles; she helps you to see them as not just action heroes or witches but as real human beings.

The story opens up right where book 3 left off, so I feel it very important to advise you to read the first three because without them you will be totally lost. "Adrian's Eagles" continues the journey of Save Haven as they move through the dangerous post apocalyptic world trying to regain some sort of normalcy in life. This book continues the conflicts of Angela, Brady and Kenn and ****slight spoiler*** White does a wonderful job showing how these three pass over a rocky road to reach a peace albeit a nervous one. She gives us a much more in depth view of all the characters and I was really able to connect with all of them. The drama with the Slavers takes center stage and she brings it to a satisfactory ending, but in her growing style, AAAAHHHHHH another cliff hanger to close the book. I honestly was forced to profanity as this book ended, "Ah `Shitake' she did it again!"

I have two daughters and I love how White is writing about strong female protagonists that stand toe to toe with all Alpha males in this book. She takes the ladies, shows their vulnerable sides but makes them stand on their own two feet and take control of their lives and begin to lead both sexes. Her writing has grown with each book and I look forward to reading many more stories from this series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best when read in series.

I love the way this series sucks you into the story line, so that you are willing to suspend your disbelief and just enjoy the ride. To me, that's good writing. Yes, there are rape scenes, abuse, and violence, but this is appropriate to any post-apocalyptic novel. In fact, I have yet to read one that doesn't have these elements. Yes, there is a lot of romance, but I view this as an interesting plot device and a better way to repopulate a devastated world than just drawing straws. I'm not a fan of the shooting matches, but like the romance, view it as an effort to include a wider readership. The witchcraft is an unusual element that I find intriguing, not to mention handy, and since I read a lot of fantasy and sci-fi I can roll with it as an element of the series. One thing I do appreciate is that the author doesn't go overboard on bashing religion which is something that has turned me off of many post-apocalypse novels that otherwise would have been an enjoyable read. The government is the main bad guy followed by a group of Mexican bandits with a leader who has an axe to grind with the US. To some this might appear to be racism. However, I think this is more a plot device than a commentary. because there are a variety of nationalities included among the "good guys" as well - which is a fact I missed on my first read through. Plus, there is a strong message supporting acceptance - of women as equal to men, nationalities, and even sexual identities - and which is again evident with careful reading of the entire series. I have only a handful of books that I will read again and again and this series has now joined the list. I am waiting for the 8th book (out in September 2015) to read them all through for a fourth time. I originally gave these books four stars, because of all the editing problems. The author has now issued a new edited Kindle book (free of charge) for Life After War Books 1-3 and I believe she is doing an improved Book 4. So here's the extra star for taking the time to fix the only major problem with this series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Life After War - The series so far
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on March 25, 2013
I can honestly say that I have really enjoyed the series so far. I have found the detail in the book to be both subtle but at the same time comprehensive. There is just enough detail for you to use your imagination to see the landscape the survivors are traveling through and to picture the horror of a world decimated by mans own foolishness and arrogance. Angela White does not spoon feed you with too many details that would smother your own mental images but allows the reader to fill in the blanks - although in places the descriptions of places or events are graphic there is never so much detail that you cannot allow your imagination free reign.

I eagerly await book five as I wonder what has happened to the main camp and what will happen when they reach their destination

Let's hope we don't have long to wait for the next installment!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good and confusing
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 3, 2020
Would have 5 stars if some of the story wasn't confusing, like paragraphing each person actions would be good instead of multiple persons actions in same paragraph. Butt still a good read, no dull moments.
Update: I am on book 9 now which so far really good. After book 5 I am unable to put it down. Ten out of ten. Nuclear winters? Brrrr I feel cold reading it
