Daughter of Winter: A dark fantasy romance (Daughter of Winter, Book 1) Kindle Edition

3.8 3.8 out of 5 stars 1,145 ratings

Marked by an ancient prophecy wielded by the gods.

Shackled to a dark, enigmatic stranger.

And prey to a powerful adversary seeking vengeance.

Her life will never be the same again . . . .

Intrigue and danger enter Brydie MacKay's life when Gage walks into her carefully controlled world. He brings news that her grandmother has died, and as her last living relative, Brydie has inherited her estate and must travel to Scotland to accept her legacy and all it entails. Brydie doesn't want the inheritance, not after the way she was treated, and when a series of actions unfold that illustrate her 'legacy' is not just a physical entity but a turbulent birthright proclaiming she is the descendant of the Celtic winter goddess, Cailleach Bheur, she tries to run.

But Gage won't take no for an answer. He has his own role to fulfil and will do whatever it takes to ensure Brydie returns to Scotland with him—even if that means taking her against her will.

Daughter of Winter is the first book in a dark fantasy romance series based on the myths and legends of the Celtic winter goddess, Cailleach Bheur. Featuring dark magic, druids, fae, selkies, mythical creatures, and a morally grey hero with an enemies-to-lovers romance, it is perfect for fans of From Blood and Ash, A Court of Thorns and Roses, and the Fever series.

Review

"Falling into this story was easy. The writing and world-building flowed smoothly, dropping the reader into a world where Celtic myths and magic are real and right under the noses of ordinary people. The plot was thrilling, and I could easily connect to the characters . . . The book also contains an electric romantic element that delivers a steady stream of tension between Brydie and the mysterious and handsome Gage. . . If I have any compaints about Daughter of Winter, it's that it ended sooner than I would have liked! Five well-deserved stars for a great debut novel!" - Deborah Adams for Readers' Favorite (★★★★★)

"The first title in a series based on Celtic mythology, Corina Douglas'
Daughter of Winter sets the stage for a battle between the descendant of a winter goddess and a vengeful immortal Druid in this strong first installment to an elaborate series. Brydie MacKay is shocked when her estranged grandmother wills her a Scottish estate, but it turns out she's inherited something far more dangerous. A cursed prophecy, impacting the next female in line, means that Brydie must travel to Scotland with a mysterious guardian and learn how to wield her magic . . . . Douglas' novel is an exciting fantasy overall with entertaining twists, a fascinating and well-crafted foundation in ancient mythology, plus a touch of romance to satisfy readers of many genres." - Self-Publishing Review (★★★★½)

From the Author

Daughter of Winter all began with the purchase of a quartz pendant a few months after the birth of my first child. This pendant (the exact same one on the cover of every book in the Daughter of Winter series) had long been in the family I bought it from. They told me the stone came from the Cairngorm Mountains in Scotland. Naturally, once I got home, I delved into some research on this location. However, what I found wasn't a wealth of information on the quartz itself but references to the Celtic Winter Goddess, Cailleach Bheur!

This intrigued me to say the least, and a kernel of an idea arose. I'm a believer in fate—that the world can spontaenously align to give you a 'gentle push' in the right direction. I gave into that urge, and what came of that gentle push of fate was
Daughter of Winter. Subsequent books in this series have since turned my debut book into an epic romantic fantasy series that readers adore and find hard to put down.

Please be aware that
Daughter of Winter is not your usual fantasy series—the storyline is written in two complimentary timeframes (one in modern day, the other in Ancient Scotland) and from multiple points of view. With complex world-building and a wealth of characters, each book in the series increases the high stakes and will have your heart pounding for more. Be prepared to fall in love with a wealth of characters and burn the midnight oil long into the night!

Triggers: sexual content, gore and voilence, and sweary dialogue.

You know it is a good book when you actually get angry when the book ends! Granted, it discloses every book ends in a cliff hanger, and no one likes not knowing what happens next while they wait for the next book to arrive, but I'm hooked. Less than a day to devour it (while working full time and 2 kids to take care of so...... the feel of the cover is oddly satisfying as well. I should have bought all 6 books at once, but I was on a tight budget and really wanted to start the book so here I am trapt in a cliffhanger void for 2.5 days till the next book arrives.

I loved the authenticity of this book. Using real gods and goddesses, and the flashbacks. It was so immersive! I love the FMC- she is bold and honest, very relatable. MMC is so dark and broody and I can't wait to see his back story! I would definitely continue reading this series.

I'm loving this so far! Its very original, I enjoy the breakdown at the beginning so you know how to properly say the character names. Why more authors don't do that I will never understand. So thank you Corina!! The book is an easy read and has me ready for the next!! The historical aspects are great and you can tell the author has done her research!

I was excited to.find a book centered around Celtic mythology, but I found several oversights distracting. Ice clinking in a neat whiskey, reminding someone you are a vegetarian when they are cooking in your kitchen, offering to make up the couch when there is an unoccupied guest room. I found these oversights and others like them distracting. The overall story was ok.

This book is very well written and well researched. Characters come to life as the story unfolds, revealing their struggles, doubts, and weaknesses. The magic and myths that the author infused into the book were well constructed. It was an enjoyable read, and I was fully engrossed into the world she created, rooting for the people in it to succeed. I loved the back story that went into the past and revealed some of the history while I "watched" the events unfold in the present. There wasn't a dull moment. Can't wait until the next book is out.

This book was a great read. It's shorter, with promises for the next installations to dig in deeper, but the book itself was really perfectly paced. The main character has really believable reactions to what is happening, and the timelines in the book leave a lot of questions I am dying to have answered. Very pleased and will be ordering the next few!

Scottish by birth and ancestry on my grandmothers side I wanted to love this. Sadly I had to quit reading and I rarely do that.

Spicy? No…a couple of spicy bits by book 4/5

Interesting concept? Yes! Story had promise but…I found myself skipping through huge swathes of text due to the repetitiveness. Certain phrases and texts were used over and over to the point I was rolling my eyes. And there was need of a good proof reader. The constant jumping between first and 3rd person for a range of characters got annoying.

The main characters’ development was stilted and they weren’t that likeable.

I think the author has promise but could really use a good editor and proof readers.

I’m shocked this book is compared to any of SJM’s series. The world building is nonexistent. The MMC is angry at the FMC for her ignorance and things totally out of her control. There’s absolutely no romance and you spend half the book confused as to what the plot is! The author clearly had an idea and direction but it wasn’t flushed out well. I finished the book, but I will not be finishing the series.

I am a slow reader but finished this book very quickly. It grabbed me immediately and held my attention so I wasn't able to put it down! The druidry magic works slightly differently than what I've read before, but I like it and love considering a different perspective on druidry.
There is a warning in the beginning of a cliffhanger, and it didn't lie. I'll definitely be reading the 2nd book.

I bought this book after seeing it recommended across a number of booktok accounts, and it didn’t disappoint.
I have a special love for the old gods and all things pagan, and this one has quickly rose up to become one of my top favourites. I finished it in a day, and ordered the following book (Winters Mantle) immediately. There’s gore, and a sizzling sexual tension that just fuel my sick little heart.
If you want a taste of magic that feel believable, and aren’t afraid for your characters to get a little murdery this book is for you!
Earings are so cute🙂 I wear them every day, they look exactly like in the picture, my favourite ones

This story is intriguing as hell!
It’s very clear the writer has set this series up to be a heart wrenching story in an epic world!
The main characters are flawed and charming, held by fate a brooding guardian who clearly has a lot to consider, a descendant of winter who has no idea the prophecy they were born into. The writing is great an easy read with phenomenal flow!

Soooooo excited to read the second instalment!!! I just now need to try to find the damn thing on paperback!!
