Author of the international bestsellers The Diabetes Code and The Obesity Code Dr. Jason Fung returns with an eye-opening biography of cancer in which he offers a radical new paradigm for understanding cancerand issues a call to action for reducing risk moving forward.

Our understanding of cancer is slowly undergoing a revolution, allowing for the development of more effective treatments. For the first time ever, the death rate from cancer is showing a steady decline . . . but the “War on Cancer” has hardly been won.

In The Cancer Code, Dr. Jason Fung offers a revolutionary new understanding of this invasive, often fatal disease—what it is, how it manifests, and why it is so challenging to treat. In this rousing narrative, Dr. Fung identifies the medical community’s many missteps in cancer research—in particular, its focus on genetics, or what he terms the “seed” of cancer, at the expense of examining the “soil,” or the conditions under which cancer flourishes. Dr. Fung—whose groundbreaking work in the treatment of obesity and diabetes has won him international acclaim—suggests that the primary disease pathway of cancer is caused by the dysregulation of insulin. In fact, obesity and type 2 diabetes significantly increase an individual’s risk of cancer.

In this accessible read, Dr. Fung provides a new paradigm for dealing with cancer, with recommendations for what we can do to create a hostile soil for this dangerous seed. One such strategy is intermittent fasting, which reduces blood glucose, lowering insulin levels. Another, eliminating intake of insulin-stimulating foods, such as sugar and refined carbohydrates.

For hundreds of years, cancer has been portrayed as a foreign invader we’ve been powerless to stop. By reshaping our view of cancer as an internal uprising of our own healthy cells, we can begin to take back control. The seed of cancer may exist in all of us, but the power to change the soil is in our hands.

Great read for those of us who are not scientists and doctors.
5 Stars
Great read for those of us who are not scientists and doctors.
Like in his previous books, Dr. Fung brings a different perspective and thinks outside the box. I appreciate how he can take complex subjects and explain them in a way that a layperson like me can understand. Thanks for helping me continue to take charge of my own health. What I've learned will make a difference.

Coming with a medical background I found the first few chapters quite basic but necessary to form the foundation for this book and provide continuity for presentation of the various cancer paradigms over the years. I found the chapters on the evolutionary biology of cancer absolutely fascinating. When I finished reading this, I lent the book to a Medical Oncologist at work and he is enjoying it too. Recommended for health care professionals and anyone else with an interest in cancer biology and medicine.

Quite depressing. I suppose the best take away is that we have a lot more control over whether we develop cancer by making better lifestyle choices. And cancer, though still often deadly, isn't the grim reaper of 50 years ago. Imho, cancer specialists are just beginning to embrace treating cancer as a whole body issue. Hospitals are still stuck on increasing weight gain of patients rather than building a healthy gut to strengthen the immune system. Some oncologists don't care what their patients eat as long as they eat. With the reasearch results on nutrition and supplementation available, it's lazy and unconscionable to not recommend a known gut strengthening diet and fasting to their cancer patients. Dr. William Li has 2 excellent books on the subject of diet and disease. Dr. Jamnadas has extensive lectures on how fasting and a low sugar diet benefits the body at a cellular level.

This book should be read by everyone! As a nurse I've studied many diseases and health conditions over the past 40 years and the information in this book still blew me away. There is an incredible amount of information here, but it's organized and written in a such a way that anyone can understand it. I've read Dr. Fung's other books and love them all but I literally could not put this one down - it's that good! If you want to learn more about Cancer or just the fascinating way our incredible bodies work then you definitely want to read this book. Truly outstanding work by Dr. Fung!

5.0 out of 5 stars Dr. Fung is clear and truthful
Reviewed in Canada on January 14, 2024
I enjoy Jason Fung's writing and his clear, no-nonsense science that anybody can apply. The upshot for me is, fast now and then and give your body a break. Think about the food, drink, ideas, and people you ingest... nutritious or toxic?
Really interesting learning about hyperinsulinemia -- or, in other words, all the effects that can happen to your body if you give it a 24/7/365 supply of sugar. In other words... take a break from the sugar now and then!

5.0 out of 5 stars Honest as always
Reviewed in Brazil on September 15, 2021
This is an excelent and humbling overview of the history of cancer and cancer treatment. The part about diet is very honest, as could be expected from Dr. Fung. There is also a very up to date chapter on cancer screening (mostly useless in most types of cancer with serious side effects to patients). No propaganda selling miracle cures disguised as fake science like most books on health subjects. Some parts are a little technical, and because of that and because of Dr. Fung's honesty, I believe some people may find it uninteresting and difficult to read. But it is heartwarming to see that the truth always slowly emerges from the shadows, even if it takes decades and millions of lives.

A book that should be ready not just by all general practitioners, but also by all cancer patients, obese persons, people with diabetes, with pre-diabetes, and all people who are interested in avoiding cancer. Cancer is not completely out of our control and is not the result of mere bad luck.

Presents the reader, the drama of Understanding the Cancer. Lucid language, takes us to the core of decoding the Cancer. As Interesting as fiction. Looks at Cancer as an Organism and not as an Enemy. Its existence since beginning of evolution, its eternity, its strengths, its survival tactics, humankind's failure to understand it and the slow dawn enlightenment of its survival. Has aroused interest in Medicine (considered out of bounds due to my non-medical background), in reading his other books, other books on cancer and related fields. That must be the outcome of any any book, right Mr. Jason Sir ? Thank you, a lot. I stay indebted you for the knowledge received...
